I got this when it first came out, and for the time, the visuals were unparalleled. When I encountered the flood for the first time, the impact of it made me feel uncertain as to whether or not I could finish the game, especially during the Library encounter. The execution was genius. I won't forget the fear I felt when I took a closer look at how badly the parasites deform their hosts. It reminded me of a film, starring Kurt Russel, called 'The Thing'. That, to me, is far more terrifying than zombies.

We were playing at night at his house, we live at the countryside so it was REALLY dark outside. When he reached the soldier with PTSD, we, both of us - even I who already played the games - were SHITTING OUR PANTS because of the atmosphere. It was priceless.

The flood aren't like the Covenant, the covenant you know what to expect, you know that the grunts are very weak and not very smart, they just have large numbers. Jackals are weak once you negate or bypass their shield. Elites aren't too difficult to deal with most of the time, unless it's cloaked or has a sword, but even then, it's not that common, Essentially when most groups have say 1-3 elites and once they are dealt with, the rest of the group is pretty easy to take care of. Hunters are rarely encountered and you know there are only 2 of them each time. Each of these units you know how to deal with them. The Flood are completely different, they jump around a lot, they are very fast, they hit hard, they swarm in number, they use both covenant and human weapons even picking them up off the ground sometimes, they have different forms, the infection forms swarm in numbers and even though they are weak individually, they can cause a lot of damage if a number of them eat at you, plus you're usually dealing with other forms at the same time. Oh and when you think you've beaten them, they reanimate the dead.......Oh and they play dead too to catch you off guard. Then when you're with allies, they infect your allies mid fight turning an ally into an enemy. They are so scary to fight. Love how they did these levels.
@Razzy-sr4oq Жыл бұрын
Bungie actually told (and paid) game magazines and journalists to withhold writing about the Flood, so it wouldn't be spoiled. No one had any idea there was any threat other than the Covenant. I'll never forget crawling through the jungle level, seeing the dead, and things moving in the dark. What an amazing feeling.

I mastered both this, and later 2 and 3 on legendary. I had a friend group that was hugely competitive, and we were still in the age of 'couch gaming parties' so it really was important to have chops in the games, so your friends aren't always carrying you in co-op... can't be dragging your team down in WaW online skirmishes, neither. We kept it going for a long time, and all of us got pretty skilled. When it wasn't all of us, a couple would still get together just to do drills. It mattered back then locally, when lots of people played games and being good with them meant respect and invitation to social circles. So many people bonded over rocking the shit out of a hard game. Miss it, but that's not the point... The point is... I was this middle-school kid who had beaten dozens of hard games, for whom Halo legendary was of course appealing to, I knew how to unlock and finish Q3 nightmare mode lol. But after beating the flood levels a couple of times in both CE and 2, I never played them without a friend... not because they were too hard... but because being alone in a dark room with flood levels is TENSE, no matter how well you know them, no matter how you can dominate every other enemy in the game. They move and behave completely different, it's a different dynamic than anything else in the game. You cannot master them. They're too erratic and chaotic, and the only REALLY effective weapons are in short supply, especially in CE. It reminds me of WaW's zombies actually... as in, it feels like you are not meant to finish, like you get as far as you can before dying and that's as good as it gets, like you're up against a great, old, all-oppressing evil. Just room after room of onslaught. Gauntlets down gigantic elevators that never seem to end, falling down winding port after port just to find that many more. Don't get me started on the atmosphere. The new graphics completely ruin it. But the bleakness of those spaces sat with you. Made you tense in absolute calm. And then comes these onslaughts where either your back is forever vulnerable, or you are stuck in a corner. Or you are scrambling around looking for something that might save you. Brilliant level and enemy design, honestly. They really baked 'terror' into even the most unassuming aspects of those levels. With almost nothing to work with by modern standards, those levels still get me worse than most modern horror. Modern horror doesn't make me feel as trapped in a maze, and out of control. There were times when I wished the flood would just come so I would know SOMETHING....

Bungie started on Halo in late 1997 after they shipped Myth 1, so it was more than 16 months. It did change quite a bit during that time though, from a myth-like real time strategy game, to a third person shooter, to a first person shooter, and a lot of the early content they made didn't end up in the final game, but the general shape of it was there for a while. They did end up rushing it though, which is because Bungie was rapidly growing from a small studio to a giant division of Microsoft, they were still finishing Oni (which also ended up being rushed, and had to cut its entire multiplayer element) and their leadership team had no experience in managing a team of more than 20 people before. This is why Two Betrayals ended up being a filler mission, and the last three missions re-use previous environments. I also don't think you could say they did it on a shoestring, they had the full resources of Microsoft at their disposal throughout 2000 and 2001!

@RAUS music It would be interesting to see how you find console FPS games prior to Halo. :) Bungie basically made the whole genre possible on console, both in terms of gameplay and control. Halo is a masterpiece, they were innovators at the time, and the gameplay/control is increadibly fine tuned for dual stick controllers. Sure, I would still argue that no modern shooter come close to the fun factor of games like Doom and Quake. Modern scope/cover mechanics and slow/realistic movement has essentially ruined the whole genre.

So fun fact, the Flood were originally planned to be in Marathon 2, but the demands of production requiring sacrifice meant that their level had to be changed to a literal flooded level.
@bahlalthewatcher47903 ай бұрын
I mean, that's half true in that there was an infection that the S'pht released in their citadel that only affected the Pfhor during the S'pht-Pfhor war, and the concept art for it definitely resembled and probably inspired the design of the Flood. But it wasn't "the Flood" in the sense of a galactic-scale eldritch horror (Marathon already had one of those - the W'rkcnacntr), it was just a bioweapon that turned Pfhor into fungal zombies. And the flooded levels were just bungie's map designers getting a bit overexcited by the water and lava physics they introduced in Marathon 2. The pfhor zombies wouldn't have been called "The Flood" (Bungie didn't really do biblical allusions before Halo 1) so there's definitely no connection there. Anyway, Marathon 2 is a great game, lots of fun and everyone should play all three games.

If you guys didnt know: the blood in the elevator is visual story telling showing us that covenant either jumped down the elevator to die, or bodies were thrown down the elevator. You never see ONE elite on this level other than the one in Jenkins movie. @babapambazuka28453 жыл бұрын
Absolutely, BUT: While the Flood reveal is what sucked me into the game for full adrenalized immersion, the Library broke it for me with all the arbitrary spawns. I got SUPER-methodical about hoarding ammo, clearing routes, and never turning my back on any space I hadn't personally sterilized, so when the game would teleport flood right behind me into a tunnel I had just come through and needed for fallback cover, it was just... "BULLSHIT". After a necessary break, I felt much less invested coming back to finish a level I knew was cheesing me like a scrub. ...which is not to take much away from the experience as a whole. Subsequent levels did not do this AFAICT, and CE remains THE formative, atmospheric shooter I built my first PCs for, with classic Unreal a close 2nd place.
