I find myself in the same boat here. If we are talking straight skill, Lethul to me is clear #1. Old generation in anything is almost always better than old. But I look back at the h3 days and just remember the magic that was Ogre 2, Snipedown, Roy, Pistola, etc.

I’m in the same spot, but I think there’s validity to it. IMO the original trilogy was the golden age for halo as an esport, and with halo 2 & halo 3, in particular during the MLG era, Halo was THE top console esport, and definitely top 3 across all platforms. There’s a reason why plenty of non-halo fans know who Walshy is, yet have never heard of lethul; from Reach onward halo was barely a side act. There’s a lot of recency bias at play here, and IMO you should prioritise the H2 & H3 pros. Admittedly though, the guys who put together the list are very experienced and clearly know their stuff.

I probably could have been on this list IF....... I watched pro players back in halo 1 and 2 days and really understood the difference between playing ranked as an above average player and competitive elite pro players in mlg and how they played. Because I stayed home from school everyday playing halo 2 stayed up all night playing halo 2 that continued with halo 3 I played reach but not as much same with 4 and 5. But had I committed and for example really studied what separates these players from the rest i put the time in 200% maybe even more time than these guys in the early days but I never took that step forward because I didn’t know it existed. The people that say some mixture of “who is this” and/or “competition was harder when there were more teams, so his success doesn’t count” are just delusional and too stuck in their ways to have any valuable opinions about this list. First of all, just because there aren’t more teams, doesn’t mean the competition is less fierce. There’s a reason there was an open bracket, that top 8 teams would always run through to pools. It didn’t matter if there were 20/60/300/1000/5000 teams, FB still always made it to the finals. The same principle applies here. EG/CLG/OPT/TOX/SEN would always have made it to where they were anyways. If you doubt that, then you doubt the hypothetical that FB would’ve always made Finals if there had been another 1000 teams competing. He beat the Godsquad and won a Reach event during their peak, which is a feat in itself. He hated H4 just like everyone else. He teamed with Roybox and dominated H2A.
