In the older DuPont produced video, we are introduced to the fire extinguishing benefits of Halon 1301 for fixed facilities and other applications. Educationally, we learn how Halon 1301 as an extinguishing agent accomplishes its mission.

Literally the best thing I ever saw !!! A genuine informational masterpiece delivered with all the precision of the 8 track and the technological wonder you would only expect from 1970s dupont , the same people who brought you lead gas and ddt pesticide , the narrator should get the Nobel price for killing it !!!!!!

This is such an awesome video!! Thank you so much for uploading this! So cool to see how this stuff was marketed, and to learn more about early forms of Halon.

Thank you for posting this, I love vintage fire videos like this and it’s a treat to see one that survived once the world banned halon and CFCS from production in Jan 1, 1994 due to stratospheric Ozone Depletion or whatever the lobbyists and EPA say it does to it.

Basically, one of the elements (chlorine) is released when touched by the sun. It reacts with ozone (O3) to form other things (chlorine monoxide etc.). This takes away from the Ozone. Just some basic chem for ya!
@gideon7212
@gideon7212 2 жыл бұрын
@@darksilence6930 more specifically, the chlorine and bromine break off into radical forms that then act as catalysts to destroy ozone, meaning that one chlorine radical is reused many times to cause damage. Ex+F has a great video on how to dispose of an extinguisher and at about 11:10 it has a through analysis of the chemistry.

Would stop flame on a lithium battery and the oxygen fed flame does the most damage.
@JuneNafziger
@JuneNafziger 2 ай бұрын
The big problem with lithium (iirc) is that when an extinguishing agent is taken away after putting out the fire the battery is still in an unsustainable state and can catch fire again.

Sad to see such a greatly useful and protective chemical banned and increasingly replaced with inferior alternatives

Dude right! Halon is Gangster AF, the montreal protocol was stupid. We still have a hole in the ozone, so what was the point. I wonder how many people are alive today, or rather lived out normal lives because of this stuff that otherwise wouldn't be. Or better yet how many people this could have saved.
@gunsho11b
@gunsho11b Жыл бұрын
@@MatthewHolevinski I could not agree with you more. What the idiots at the EPA fail to realize is that what ever smoke from the burning material (plastic, rubber, trash, chemical, you name it etc.) that is on fire, is going to pollute the air way more than the Halon agent being used to extinguisher that fire. One of the most effective and versatile fire fighting agents ever made and they ban the production of it. Fast forward to today and they have yet to come up with a practacle alternative. Halotron, FM 200, Novec, do not even come close. I can tell you that if I encounter a fire, during which property and lives are at stake, I want that fire to be extinguished as quickly and effectively as possible. The last thing I am worried about is the G#$ D@%n Ozone layer being damaged from what is coming out of my extinguisher. The folks at the EPA and those whoever drafted that so called Montreal Protocol should be locked up and thrown in prison!

This along with a thousand other beneficial and cheap technologies, like CFC refrigerants and incandescent light bulbs, now banned, and the internal combustion engine, soon to be banned. It's a deliberate technological and economic regression designed to impoverish and kill many of us.
