Halter breaking a heifer calf - it got western fast!

ive learned a few tricks over the years 1) i like to use a halter with a sliding ring, this will help her know when she walks shes doing the right thing 2) where do cattle come from? they come from a mom and moms dont wrap a halter around you and pull you around, they guide you so using little tugs is more effective than trying to outmuscle a calf and fyi you cant outmuscle a calf lol

Definitely helps to hold as close to their head with the halter rope it doesn’t give them the chance to run all over like that and keeps you more in control.

3:55 Wouldn't "we're done" mean that the calf has submitted to you? I don't get it, if it's still struggling and fighting and you take it off, wouldn't the calf thinks it won snd escaped??

dont pull constantly you need to do little pulls and if she dosent budge than do bigger pulls but more like jabs not constint pulling, this is because its more encoraging and it shows a understanding between you and the animal.

Have them drag a small tire for the day. This causes a sore spot at the halter, which will keep the calf from pull back when you hold the lead rope.

This is even harder than it looks. Another good tip is to put their head into the fence when they start to go crazy.

Honestly I tie my calfs up to a gate and let them fight the halter ( the more they fight the more it tightens ). I do this for a 1 & 45mins for 2-3 days . Then I begin putting them in the chute tied up so they can’t move around a lot this for 2-4 days . Then I start walking after day 1 they are broke . I feed after they are done working and use this as a reward . I love Red Angus and Hereford crosses! So beautiful. My first steer was a Red Angus and Hereford cross, but it had a unique color variant! That was the best show calf I have ever had!

If you have a tractor tie her up too the back and drive slowly this will get them used to walking with it on

If you can milk her I would imagine that she is pretty tame? How do you get her up to milk if she's not halter broke? Unless you have an expensive automated milk barn

You need a donkey to do all the work. 3 days the calf will go where you want.

@@jenny9545horse you make a harness and clip a lead rope to it one end goes to donkeys harness the clip the other to the halter of the calf. Where ever the donkey wants to go it will make the calf go.
