You are an excellent teacher. I know, because I am a retired teacher. hi hi I had a great deal of difficulty with getting the ham clock on my Pi but after much diligence and hacking I got it all to work. The directions on clearsky were not all that clear to me, but it is a great starting point. I also purchased the pre-made unit and that is worth every cent. However, I love to experiment. I now have ham clocks all over the house. hi hi 😁

Video is a few months old, so this is FYI… At 02:20 you run the command ‘sudu apt-get update’ This gives you the list of of updatable software on your install. But you never run the ‘sudo apt-get upgrade’ Which actually UPGRADES the software To be fair, the ‘How-To’ does not mention the ‘upgrade’ command. BTW, excellent How-To video on an excellent Ham Shack Clock Project. Thanks!

Are you sure that you are running the rebuilt hamclock? I recall that when I made the higher resolution version, the executable name from the build was "hamclock-1600x960". That is, I had the original resolution "hamclock" and the newer "hamclock-1600x960". I think difference is just due to the pi screen setting that you changed and that you are getting a stretched hamclock and not the better resolution. I built a wall hamclock by mounting an unused monitor on the wall (like a TV) and using a tiny Raspberry Pi Zero 2 W, a short HDMI to mini HDMI cable, and a 12V DC to a micro USB buck converter- tapping into the monitor 12V power supply cable as this monitor did not have a USB port. It's been working great for about a year now.

This is a fantastic project and addition to the shack. I built one of these several years ago. The RPI requirements are minimal and worked fine with an ancient RPi 1, second edition. I equipped it with an arduino to control display brightness versus ambient and an RF proximity detector to power on-off the 15 inch display. Yes, the screen expansion via RaspiOS is a bit hokey but is OK for QCWAx2-old eyes. Thanks for your scripts and excellent instructions! --N2GX

Jason, maybe put out a disclaimer that the hamclock re-sizing doesn't work with a 73 Linux install. File structure doesn't match.

Jason...Thanks for the Elmering! Pro tip: Ctrl-L clears the screen in Linux. Easier to type than "clear" and pressing return.

It might look like work, but when you factor that Windows may have forced you to wait through any of a dozen things it decided to prioritize over the work you wanted to do, you end up saving tons of time. And, I still run a HamClock on a Pi B. It has been running off and on for at least a decade. Robust!

@@Siskiyous6 yeah, Windows is annoying me being so resource hungry and stupid random update restarts. I'm gonna change most PC's to Linux, so far it's going well. I am now paranoid about security as i got my bank account info hacked before xmas, major hassle! ... im now on a quest to be secure and aswell as ham and Rpi stuff. I have a Rpi4 to setup aswell, luckily bought before scalping started.🍻😆👍

@@DonzLockz Set up a CC\Debit card on your appropriate device phone wallet. Use that for tap to pay, way more secure. Transmits an alias number to the merchant so your actual card/info doesn't get used. Returns work the same. The only one with your card info is the phone app...not EVERY merchant you go to. The merchant can get hacked...but they don't have your number to give to the hacker. Contact your bank and demand more secure systems to pay. They have one in Europe that requires the merchant to send a code to your phone and YOU accept the payment first. No acceptance no payment, just one example

Been using hamclock for a while now, dev has really put some good work in with all the updates! Question: I noticed while installing build-a-pi (thank you btw) that a fun fact is you do have a pi in the jeep. I have a full station setup, capable for 2m/70cm FM, crossband etc, with data (hence the pi) as well as all mode HF (ft-891) powered with isopwr+ and a 100ah battery, charged off my car when it's on. How do you power your pi. I'm trying to come up with a way that will power the pi off my aux battery, and autopower off the pi (cleanly) when the car's engine is shutoff (probably relay since otherwise the pi fans will keep spinning), Any thoughts? Thanks for all you do for us! And as a system engineer (IT) the fact you built build-a-pi with 0 scripting experience (then even PHP? yikes) is very impressive. I know folks in my industry for over a decade as a profession that couldn't accomplish what you have.

A little late to the party but I’ve found that a Nintendo 12v (cigarette lighter plug) mobile power adapter provides 5v at sufficient amperage to power my Pi4. I found mine at the local W@lm@rt.

I've set up HamClock on a 22" monitor but it's far too big for my shack. I'd be happy to pick up the official Pi 7" display but I'm a bit concerned that at 800x480, the resolution might be too low for HamClock. Have you tried it at that lower resolution and if so, how readable is it?
@KM4ACK
@KM4ACK Жыл бұрын
I haven't tried it on a 7" monitor. I prefer the 10". This is the one I use with good results and perfectly readable - amzn.to/3oSpJ2G

@@KM4ACK Interesting, thanks. I am finding the 7" display at 800x480 to be too small and low resolution. The headline resolution on that 10" you've linked says 1920x1200 but all the spec for that particular one says 1280 x 800. I don't mind buying another one if I know it's going to be usable. What resolution are you running HamClock on that 10" display please?

BTW, "sudo" sounds like "sue do", not "pseudo". It's a shorthand for "superuser do"
@stargazer7644

The su stands for switch user, not superuser, as it uses the switch user 'su' command to 'do' things. Just as 'su' can switch you to any user, 'sudo' can be used to run programs as any user, not just root.

Applications should not override system functions like NTP and Wifi config. And the thing runs as root. That's horrible design.
