The fuse should be under the hood, close to the battery. If the insulation of the red wire gets damaged by, say, being pinched in the hinge, a stone scraping the bottom, etc. and manages to touch ground, you want the fuse to blow.

up under the dash you will have several penetrations where cables and wiring is routed though. use one of those. dont route power like that

I understand the reasoning behind your logic, however there's a few major issues: 1. You should never wire directly onto the battery if you can help it. Try to use a fuse. 2. Where the cables go around the door hinge, you may have issues with damaging those cables enough to cause issues with the car, or even a fire. Vehicles usually have a negative ground, meaning the negative pole on the battery is connected to the car body. Any damaged positive cables touching the body will cause an issue.

1-you're dead on with the fender routing. Did that, had a soaked carpet. 2- I use the ICOM 2730. The mic can plug into the control OR rf deck. You don't need a cat-5 ext. cable unless you like I did and ran it off the rf deck only because I didn't want the mic cord hanging in front of my dash controls

If you could explain how I'll be sure to take a look. I used fuses, well reviewed mag mounts, and made sure to check there's no SWR or logmag change with the door closed on the cable. If it helps, on my new car everything is installed with NMO mounts, with the radio in the rear.
