I have tried and tried repeatedly to get Chirp installed and working but without success... until now! I followed your expert guide and it now runs as expected. I uninstalled 'brltty' which seemed to be the problem. You have, of course, a new subscriber! Many thanks indeed Kevin. I'm going to install it on my Ubuntu laptop next.

Very very slowly improving. Bear in mind, you're seeing me at my best of the day. I record in the morning when I have the most energy. But by afternoon I'm mostly horizontal, worn out and hoping for a better one the next day.

I presume you're talking about a software defined radio or SDR. I like the Airspy HF+ discovery. I use it often. It works find with GQRX and the other SDR programs under linux. airspy.com/airspy-hf-discovery/

Seems like a convoluted way to install a program. AppImage would be so much easier, but I guess there are technical issues at play.

I so wish every dev would go to appimages. Everything would be better and easier. For some other reason they seem to be moving toward flatpack and snap, which really clutters up the filesystem.

Tried it, and yes it does, but also spits out several warnings about conflicts with the system package manager and other things.

I have install chirp, and it starts up, but I can not click on any menu. I can't even click on the close app (x) button. I am using Linux Mint 21.3. Any help is appreciated.

Do I think 'what?' will be fixed? If you're talking about the two things for serial port access, brltty and dialout group security, that has nothing to do with chirp.

@gregoryhorwitz7373 with each new release of the operating system they rebuild all the software in the repositories with the current versions at the time. So when the next new version of papoose comes out, whatever version of chirp is available then is what will be in Pop shop

Regarding the use of sdr++, I can only use FM at present, and I can't receive the medium wave station and there is no sound. How should I set it up? Can you make a video?

Still not loading in Linux Mint v. 21.3. Get the error message: Error installing chirp from spec /home/robert/Desktop/chirp-20240706-py3-none-any.whl Been trying for months to get this to work on this distro. If I use synaptic packag manager, it loads but does nothing else. I ended up installing windows 10 on a laptop and making it my Ham Radio laptop.

You will need to add --system-site-packages After the install command for the package. If it says it is already installed then do --system-site-packages --force This will fix your issue because wxpython is not installed within venv pipx

I don't think it matters what order. Although for that firmware I think you have to do something special with chirp. There might be some kind of a library you have to download and add to it. It does support the Egzumer firmware directly though. That's the one I'm using. You might have to look through the site for the IJV firmware to find out what we need to do with chirp to make it work.

Hello Kevin, Just ALMOST SUCCESSFULLY completed the CHIRP-NEXT install ... I also have a UV-K5 radio (ANYSECU). Install is complete but WON'T TALK with my radio. I do NOT have the USB Serial (ttyUSB0) option available. Got any ideas? Thanks in advance ! 73 de kg5rk

First, make sure the cable is plugged all the way in on the radio. Sometimes it feels like it is, but with just a bit more pressure, you'll feel it click in. Second, go to the /dev folder on the disk and scroll down through the tty*** devices listed. See if ttyUSB0 shows up. Another deice name that some serial interface chips create is ttyACM0. Did you go through the steps to add your user to dialout and remove brltty? If so, did you reboot after?

My install was just about TEXTBOOK similar to yours except I used 20241213 files for my install. First, I DEFINITELY removed brltty, and added dialout to my user name. Yes, I have REBOOTED several times. The cable is tightly secured to the side of the HT. NO, I do not see any other device names other than TTY numbers and custom. However, I am beginning to suspect my AMAZON bought interface cable ... I plan to try a different cable and USB to serial adapter. Any other ideas? 73 de KG5RK

@@PaintmanJohn I'd try a different cable too. Open a terminal and type sudo dmesg That will show you the last few messages from the kernel. Plug in the cable to a usb port and then rerun the terminal command. If the system saw the USB interface, there will be a few messages added as it identifies the usb device.

Hello Kevin, Well for me, the 5TH. time was a charm. Chirp Next stubbornly resisted all efforts to identify the serial port until TODAY with the new load date of 20241227. Happy to say... Somebody else was having that problem and it turns out they were pasting in the dollar sign at the beginning instead of starting with the sudo

@@loughkb Yes I noticed that. The first line to copy from the chirp site is not as long as in the video. I ran that and the install-chirp line but it just says error. I may throw the Baofeng out of the window ha ha ....

idk why this isn't available on AUR. I must be doing something very wrong because i have been stuck in an error loop for about 3 days now and no one seems to have any solutions for arch based OS.

I don't think arch linux uses APT for package management. You might have to build from source.

You needn't reboot after changing group membership. Just logout and log back in.

Generally yes, but on some distributions in the past it didn't work. Never figured out why I figured it was just safer to suggest a reboot which should work in all cases.

Chromebook is purpose built to run Chrome only. You need to do this on a machine running a normal Linux installation.

Look in the /home directory. It'll be the same name as your home folder. It should be the name you used to login when you start up.

I've gone through this video a few times and pipx is installed. The whl file is download 20241227.whl on the desktop. then when i type (in the terminal) copy/pasted from web page pipx install --system-site-packages ./chirp-20241227-py3-none-any.wh Error message Unable to parse package spec: ./chirp-20241227-py3-none-any.whl EVERY single time. It's saying it can't find the file. Is your current working directory your desktop where the file is? Type pwd to see your current directory. Or, just type cd ~/Desktop Also, make sure the file name matches exactly, it is case sensitive.
