Julian, another cold weather survival trick I had learned in the US Marine Corps is to heat up 4”-5” round rocks that might be lying around nearby that you can put under your bedding or on a blanket on your lap to help your body to stay warm, then rotate them as needed. I wish you luck powering that IC-705. Wonderful video Julian! I've been fighting with a Wokphi-link for a few weeks now that XGGComms interface seems like a dream come true (perhaps if the cables were a bit shorter) I might give it a try! My own winter station is a lightweight yurt style sized for two operators and gear. I've found a decent solution to condensation to allow me to boot up the radios sooner, is that I have a waterproof gear case that contains the radio, tuner, and raspberry PI. This case also has waterproof connections for Power In, and Antenna Out to allow the radio to operate from inside the case without exposure to the elements!

Julian: I have a 100 watt solar system that is functional and in a stand alone mode independent from the vans 12 volt battery and fuse box. This solar system is not grounded to the vans body at all. I now have a CB radio that I wish to hook up to the solar 12 volt fuse box with the antenna for the CB radio currently grounded to the body of the van ( 102” whip ) If I use this solar fuse circuit for the CB without the vans battery/fuse box inline would this be a safety concern for the overall use of the CB radio and antenna’s SWR reading? My original thought here is to use the radio totally independent from the vans power with the solar ground separate from the van’s ground…. Hope this made sense what are your thoughts on this kind of set up? THANK YOU
@OH8STN3 жыл бұрын
You shouldn't connect your CB radio directly to that solar panels output. You should connect your solar panel to a charge controller, then the charge controller to a battery. Connect your cb to the battery or the van fuse box, but not directly to the solar panel.

Great setup. I would suggest having a reduced power mode in case your power production or reserve methods become compromised. For example: not using wifi, reducing number of devices needing power, reducing the RF output on the 705, etc. Aside from that, what kind of steps have you already taken to reduce any unnecessary power consumption? I noticed you're running Windows with the high contrast theme - are you using the Performance Options, do you kill xserver when not actively on the pi desktop, etc?

Worked 24 hours of winter field day with this configuration. It was snowing so I didnt deploy the solar panels. Instead I ran one Lightsaver Max until dead, then used my backup power supply as mentioned. Finished field day with it 90% full. My strategy doesn't depend on reducing capability, rather increasing battery storage and charging. Naturally any unnecessary systems are powered down or disabled already. Honestly though, my station is so energy efficient already, I don't bother with adding extra tasks to manage. My entire station eg computer, tablet, ic-705 draws less than 450ma (combined) on RX. 2.8A on full 10w TX. it could be fun to minimize to the lowest level possible, just to try. Awesome discussion

Great question. The batteries (LiFePO4 or Li-Ion) don't mind being discharged in the cold, but can't be charged while below freezing. As soon as the inside temperature of the tent is above freezing, I'll generally start connecting them to solar. To protect them from freezing during site change, I activate chemical hand warmers dropping them into the insulated pouch my batteries live while on the move. All my video equipment has insulated pouches to keep them from freezing, but the trick is short flights for the camera copter, before being re-warmed in the tent. Or for the camera gimbal, keeping it in my pocket until needing it, using it, then back to the pocket. Most of my gear is from DJI. It's clever enough to warn me about the temperature, or the camera copter icing up. Magnificent question. 73 Julian oh8stn

I see a weak point in the android tablet connected to the mini pc via vnc. If you want to avoid all of those you shall look into the new get Windows 10 Pc based on ARM chip which means from one side you'll be able to run a full version of Windows and on the other extreme low power consumption. That way con can compress two devices in one (you will get rid of the mini pc and android tablet) which means more portability. And you will also gain in readability not having to bridge the whole thing via VNC (wifi setup etc etc)
@OH8STN4 жыл бұрын
Although you are right, perhaps you missed the part in the video where I wanted to be untethered. I want to use the tablet from anywhere inside the shelter, or around the camp without wires being attached to the radio. Thanks for the comment

Hi@@OH8STN, and thank you for your reply. I got your point willing to be untethered; I thought your most important goal with this experiment is to go low power. If this is your main goal, well, then avoiding wifi, you'll save some extra amps for sure. Of course, going extreme, there is always some downside: In this case, one more cable. As always, it's a trade-off. Based on my experience in the ICT ecosystem, I can tell you that the more complex the architecture is, the more probabilities that something goes wrong. Going in the field with such extreme conditions, my humble suggestion would be to go the simplest the possible. But I've never done such an experience; I'm just another tech guy. Amazing work Julian! I have 3 questions: 1. Why don't you buy the dedicated bag for the IC-705? You can leace the radio inside the bag and have all the wires connected to the raspberrypi, the ATU, etc. It would be much more faster to deploy and it can protect the radio and the raspberry pi from the elements. 2. So the LightSaver Max cannot go in the snow? You referred to it as not waterproof 3 why not buying a rugged case for your tablet if your tablet is not rugged in the first place? It's cheaper and works well. Finally, i want to point out that the cage does not fit with the IC-705 inside the dedicated bag. But the bag already acts as a shield for the radio. The problem is the side handles with extrude too much towards the front. Personally i think the ahould be smaller (like side guards)
@OH8STN4 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the kindness. The Icom bag is probably very nice, but I have to move with my ski pulk sled. SO I already have a nice pack for the 705, tuner, cables and tablet. The sled carries the entre station including tent and stove. The Lightsaver max is no totally waterproof, but even if it was, it is -19c outside. We cannot charge litium based batteries in negative temps, The rollable panels can be outside, get wet, buried, driven over, or blown up, and still charge the Max :) I have a rugged cover for my tablet. This is an interim solution until I get a rugged tablet or laptop. The tablet is in the same pouch as my other radio gear, then stored on my ski pulk sled, in a dry bag. They may be accurate. very much like the cage as it is. It does a great job of protecting the rotary encoders. Any smaller and we loose the protection it offers. I will soon show my 705 pack which works very well to protect the entire radio with cage on. Excellent discussion. 73 Julian oh8stn

@@OH8STN personnaly, i was not planning on making super long ops in winter needing a shelter, so the bag is very important for quick deployment. The small heating pannels can be driven by a small usb battery pack inside the bag. There's no right or wrong way to what we do. There's only the way which works best for us. I haven't really been able to come up with a rapid deployment system for winter time. It's always about avoiding exposure and frostbite. Thanks for the nice discussion and of course the kindness. It's very much appreciated. 73 Julian oh8stn

@@OH8STN Hey julian, i thought about it and i dont think you have spoken about your solution to RFI from the electronics affecting your radio. Is it because your cable as the shortest they can be and thus no need for ferrite beads core? Or you solved that issue a long time ago and didn't talk about it? My second reason for having a HF portable rig is that i cannot get rid of all the RFI in my house and in the field, the only source of RFI comes from the rest of the electeonics i bring with me...This could be a interesting video subject don't you think?

I don't think it's appropriate to use a solar power system in winter. The sunshine is too short. Why not consider carrying a 1 kilowatt portable generator? Maybe the QRP system consumes low power.

It's not a bad idea but remember the RF noise from the inverter, sound from the gene, smell, carrying liquid fuel. Perhaps if I was running a larger station with higher power over a longer span of time. A small diesel generator is something I'd like to investigate in the future. One with a DC alternator and no inverter. Just to charge a LiFePO4 power-pack.

Why has no one made a Ham radio that uses an iPad? SDR transceiver would be nice

If you're going to use propane or butane heat in an enclosed area pick up a CO (carbon monoxide) detector

Well, yes, I'm impressed. But the thing for me is how did you develop such a flat American accent?
