Very interesting Kevin. I wish i had a copy of this when trying to explain how and what the 405/625 lines meant on domestic TV. When you think just how far the human race has advanced in the last 100 years or so, from the Wright brothers to the moon, spark transmitters to moving picture TV, and Turin's Bombe to a wrist watch with more computing power. I wonder what the next hundred years, or even 20 will bring!! Keep up the great work Jim M7BXT

Kevin, thank you for posting this. I host a daily KZbin channel that helps to teach ham radio. I like to show different modes that we use in the hobby. This is very well done. I’d like to use this on an upcoming episode. Thank you so much for the presentation… Keep up the terrific work here! The more we can advance knowledge, exposure and interest the better. All the best, Larry de K7HN

Thanks for the video. The colours mentioned - Cyan, Magenta, Yellow and Black, are ink colours for printing (usually) to paper. CMYK colours are "subtractive. " This means the colours get darker as you blend them together. The RGB colour model is an "additive" model, when 100% of each colour is mixed together, it creates white light. RGB is used in displaying images and video on a monitor or TV. Love your videos, thanks again, 73 de Kevin ZS6KB.

2:25 the "tele-" prefix, such as in television, telephone, or teletype, does not mean "audio" it means something that travels across some distance.

I use the app ISS Detector on the google play store to find when the ISS passes over head, anything +40 degrees should give enough window time to complete an image. Very handy as it you can give you an alarm for when they pass over head. As for SSTV software, there are plenty to use, but if you're off up a hill with a cheap baofeng trying your best, you may also want to try one of the SSTV apps. Robot36, again on the Google Play store is pretty good, it has auto mode and will save the image once completed. Unfortunately wind can cause the sound to be off a little and result in excess noise on the image, so try your best to shield the wind if you're doing it this way. Also, its worth noting that you'll ideally want to turn squelch off completely. Good luck for those trying to receive images from the ISS. For those unlucky enough not to be able to make it out or be near a radio on the short spans that the ISS is over head, you might be able to use one of the Web SDR, like the London Farnham site, farnham-sdr.com/ and manually check when the ISS is overhead at that location.

About the software there is a package called "wine" available for Linux and Mac and with this you can install Windows software on Linux and Mac. So you can install MMSSTV on Linux and Mac as well. BTW You're doing a great job with your videos! I love watching them! Wine: www.winehq.org/ PS: I use MMSSTV with wine on Linux Mint 19 (based on Ubuntu 18.04) and it works great.

Interesting stuff! I wonder, can you DX using SSTV or is this strictly an NVIS kind of thing? Also, why can't noise be auto-corrected like fax data sent by modem over telephone wires using parity checks and so on? It might require two channels, one for tx one for rx, but even so, is this possible or am I missing something?
@loughkb
@loughkb 5 жыл бұрын
It's not a digital signal, so no error correction is possible. It's an analog tone. I remember many years ago that there was a SSTV event or two. You can certainly DX. I've picked up SSTV images from other countries quite often. This weekend the Space Station was transmitting SSTV on 2 meters all weekend. I think that probably counts as DX! ;-)

Not very well, you have a lot of noise sources inside the house, and the housing materials themselves will attenuate the signal slightly.

The ISS will at times send SSTV over 2 meters. Then you have to watch for when it will be overhead and tune in.at 145.800. Almost two things at once - satellite tracking (for finding the ISS) and SSTV!

Hi Kevin, you have explained the SSTV brilliantly! Just few days ago a deadly storm in nearly 300 years - cyclone 'Amphan' battered West Bengal state of India resulting complete breakdown of all modes of conventional communications especially in villages situated at the brink of the mighty Ganges river. Following the aftermath of cyclone 'Amphan', a gentleman based in Calcutta (now Kolkata) was anxious about his parents, spouse and offspring who resides in a village close to the Ganges. He approached the Calcutta Ham club and they helped him to unite with his family using the SSTV. Sharing the news link if you would like to read the story:As communications failed post-Amphan, HAM radio club tuned in to save the day indianexpress.com/article/cities/kolkata/as-communications-failed-post-amphan-ham-radio-club-tuned-in-to-save-the-day-6428007/ By the way, I really love the production style of all your videos. They just too good! I am a new Ham and learning a lot from your videos:) Greetings from New Delhi, India. 73s

... problems here. I found a youtube video with sstv samples. MMSSTV is installed on my laptop and Robot 36 on android cell phone. The same youtube audio was played on the laptop, cell, smart tv and android tablet. Robot 36 didnt work with any, and MMSSTV only worked with the tablet as audio source. This device has mono out, so I set the cell and laptop to mono audio, but that did not work either. What am I doing wrong?
@loughkb
@loughkb 5 жыл бұрын
Usually, problems are related to sound input. Make sure mmsstv is looking at the right sound input and that you can see the audio on its waterfall display. Also it needs to pick up a good signal without a lot of room noise.
@tvbox6955
@tvbox6955 5 жыл бұрын
...problem fixed. The laptop and cell phone both had sound enhancements (active by default) that needed to be disabled. Once this was done, both Robot 36 and MMSSTV now work; but MMSSTV is better.

Well, I think that you have to correct this. TELE is the English pronunciation of the word THΛE (pronounced TILE in Greek) and the meaning is distant, far away, not close. Other word that you English speaking people have borrowed are: Tele - phone. Both parts are Greek. Tele (distant) Phone (from the word ΦΩΝΗ pronounced FONI) meaning Voice. So Telephone in Greek means a Voice that comes from a distance.
