What in particular did you want him to answer directly? It would have been a poor debate strategy to spend all evening answering Mehdi's misleading questions about specific incidents undertaken by the IDF in a year-long war. Many of the answers would amount to either "the school/hospital/apartment was being used by Hamas as a command center or "the trucks were hit by mistake" or even "that did not happen the way you claim." It would not have been very edifying.

Even the question: "Were Israel's actions in the Gaza war justified?" The correct question would have been: "Was Israel's reaction to the most heinous declaration of war ever justified?" Also you should recall Mehdi mentioning five ICJ arrest warrants, 3 for Hamas leaders and 2 for Israelis. There was no demurrer that the Hamas ones were illegitimate. Hasan also criticized the use of civilian facilities to cover tunnels, so Hasan did criticize both sides. Now show us examples of Eylon criticizing Israel.

International law says that if you occupy another country (which does not apply in Israel's case since Palestine was never a country; they took Gaza from Egypt and West Bank from Jordan), you must govern it by military justice ("court martial"). Otherwise, if you apply civil law you are considered to be de jure annexing the territory. So if you claim Israel is occupier then it is adhering to its legal obligations.

I think that having this debate is hugely important, so thanks to Eylon Levy and Mehdi Hasan for participating. But the management of the debate should have included these points: 1. Audience applause/cheers allowed only AFTER each speaker’s presentation (not during, which serves to interrupt the flow of an argument). 2. A debater’s microphone is turned off when it is not his turn to speak (absolutely no debaters’ interruptions allowed). The way the debate went was not conducive to either debater being able to carefully set out truth-seeking arguments and counter-arguments. As a result, the debate was not as helpful as it could (should) have been. In spite of the poor format of the debate (especially its interruptions), I thought Eylon Levy set out the stronger case, whereas Mehdi Hasan relied heavily on cheap debate tactics (which got lots of cheers, but were otherwise problematic). Perhaps OPEN TO DEBATE should ask Levy and Hasan to have a re-match, but this time with no interruptions-from debaters and audience-allowed.

I support Elyon Levy’s positions. In my opinion taking on the role of the fake “international Criminal Court’ , UNRWA and the role of the UN bodies was difficult to do in the short time allotted. This however, is important as it is the cover that HAMAS apologists use to cover their actual genocidal intentions. The importance of the debate was not the audience in the room but the general public - particularly the working people as they are far less swayed by Iranian and Qatari money than Academia. It is always difficult to counter a rage of totally false accusations hurled at one but I think Elyon did a good job.

Apparently all organizations that criticize Israel- you mention the ICC and various UN agencies- are “fake”. Nothing to substantiate that very convenient accusation. Hasan explicitly stated that Zeteo’s backers were American, but that doesn’t stop you from deciding his financial support is Iranian (nobody even mentioned Iran) and from Qatar. Seems fair to assume your support of Levy is purely emotional since it lacks any evidentiary base.

The moderator is really good in identifying cheap shots coming from Eylon and immediately calling them out, but when Mehdi does the same he s allowed to keep going and sometimes even not called out. The moderator s clearly biased. Moderator disgustingly biased. He s incapable of making Hassan stop talking over Levi, yet he chooses to stop both of them (actually stop Levi correcting Hassan s misleading statement). Always quick to cut Levi under the pretext of time but he gladly allows Hassan rant on and on. At the end of the debate he allows a little extra intervention for his favourite to basically defend his integrity and when Hassan finishes his free bonus performance, the moderator claims to regret having allowed it.
