My comment is not strictly about this battle, but it is amazing how much the whole world has changed since that war, in the 60's China and North Vietnam were allies, China was just trying to recover from a century and half of civil war, invasions, weak government, rebellions, famines and natural disasters etc. 50 years later, Vietnam fears and hates the recovered China, which has now regained it's original status of being a superpower. Europe has changed drastically, so has East Asia and South East Asia, the Middle East etc. The US is still the main economic and military superpower, but China's economy is on the verge of overtaking that of the USA. I wonder what the soldiers who fought in the Vietnam war would have thought if they could see how the world has changed in a fairly short time.

China and North Viet Nam were not "allies" during the Viet Nam War. The North Vietnamese simply obtained weapons from China, but never were an "ally" never mind friend per se. That said, the Chinese and Vietnamese have always been enemies for thousands of years. That North Viet Nam became a kind of client state of the PRC had more to do with pragmatic reasons than sympatico feelings.

U.S. Soldiers are not trained to think like that. They don’t have the training to look at the implications of their actions on a meta scale. For most Vietnam veterans, their thinking about the war and the current staye of world affairs today rarely goes beyond their immediate needs, or when their next apointment with a VA doctor, or when that next disability check is coming in. Vietnam vets - not surprisingly - are still a bunch of bitter old men, many of them still locked in a ca. 1960’s mindset of fighting for the domino theory and more body counts, yet incapable of understanding why the U.S. lost the war, except for the fact that they were stabbed in the back by Jane Fonda and all those draft-dodging hippy protesters. The majority of them still have a huge chip on their shoulder about this, bizzarely hate all Asian males yet fetishize Asian females, and keep on muttering in mantras, “We could’ve won the war if they didn’t tie our hands behind our backs!”

That's funny that the ex-GI stuck that found money in his pocket without a second thought when the other dude thought it might be a (police?) trap. I was working in the post office as extra help needed for the Christmas season many years ago. I saw an envelope on a conveyor belt with money sticking out of it. I pointed it out to another guy and he said the same thing the dude in this video said - "It's a trap - don't touch it". Not wanting to spend Christmas in federal prison, I just watched the money go by ha ha.

Like UniqueLifter205#, I also read those books about 25 years ago. I specifically remember the lightning strike. Those books inspired me to join the Army, and 22 years later, I’m still doing it. I, however, chose a career as a Crewchief/Door Gunner. The vast majority of my career has been in direct support of Special Operators like you. Thanks for what you have done and continue to do.

Thank you for posting this Larry. I really wanted to see more from your visit there. It seems that you walked the same path as I did in 2012 when I shot my video that's also on here. It also seems you had the same guide. Do you remember if your guide was called Mr Diu? I have read your book and at Gary Linderer's from the Six Silent Men series and remember well the incident when you got hit by the lightning. It was mentioned I think in the video that you were walking down to an LZ and as I said it seems you walked to the same place we did. Our guide told us it was an LZ during the battle in 69. However, I got it confirmed from Frank Boccia who was a platoon leader during the battle and wrote the book The crouching beast that they never landed chopper that far up during the battle. But that big clearing was right where they advanced up to the summit in the latter stages of the battle.

50 years on and time has changed everything including those that were actually there in 69. Back then when we were all young we never dreamed that someday, those of us who've made it this far, would be this old, senile and decrepit. Best regards to all on both sides who were just doing their duty.

Unfortunately the 18-hour documentary: The Vietnam War, Ken Burns and Lynn Novick, although it did elect the brave American soldiers and the bravery of the Vietnamese, but criticizes that the orders to attack the hills 937, 875 and 1338, that produced many americas casualties , were conflicting, for soon after, the soldiers were ordered to retreat after the 'conquered' of the Hills. The Documentary induces the error in this part, because these Hills were places of intention presence of the enemy, what is denied in the documentary, unfortunately.
