What better way to introduce a new qawwal than a Hamd! A well presented piece in bhopali/shudh kalyan with many raags woven in intricately. There is pure joy on the faces of the musicians and that is rare to see in Qawwals, most of them with overbearing apathy and scarcely a smirk on the throwing of a note. This is an ecstatic performance, one of real interest and desire "Sharab-e-shauq mi nosham ba-gird-e-yaar mi gardam Sukhan mastana mi goyam ba le-hoshiyar mi gardam" I do think with some work this qawwal easily has the potential to match the great names of our time and before. The girah bandhi is well done and the phrase is reiterated many times yet still kept very well fresh with the weaving of raags and well placed girahs A fine performance, leaving me with little to be desired, if any at all. Please do share more of their works.

What words could suffice and be appropriate enough to express praises and accolades for this piece of soul stirring heavenly Hamd/ Qawwali? The arrangement and presentation of the poetics of the grand Sufi Masters weaved into a tapestry of shimmering jewels in mellifluous ‘ sur’ - resonates with the faith, and affirmation that there is ‘no god but God’- the ONE! Subtle, yet grand in subject matter, put together with such refined artistry and ease- this is what I know Ustad Ghulam Farid Nizami is all about, and more… his brilliant son, Faraz is surely following the path his respected guide, his father leads… This ‘ Dream Journey’ transcends all earthly crossings, and carries one to be one with the Divine! Wishing all members of this remarkable team- passion, compassion, grace, love, and kindliness in this much troubled world- ‘ follow the LIGHT’.

Stunning performance! Could anyone please identify the raags being used?
@eus89649 ай бұрын
To my untrained ears, it sounds like the pinned comment is correct in identifying shuddha Kalyan (or Bhoop Kalyan, its other name) as the framework for at least the beginning section. You can tell because it sounds like Bhoop (s r g p d S) going up and includes the notes of Kalyan ( n and m in the meends while approaching d and g) in the descent. The comment is also right in that other ragas are also interwoven. I was able to identify Durga (in the middle) and yaman towards the end. However, take my diagnoses with grains of salt. I think it would add to the stupendous work The Dream Journey is already doing if they could also ask the performers on more details about the ragas being showcased. Would be a great asset for both learners as well as for posterity.

@@eus8964 Thanks for your detailed comment and your appreciation of our work. It is certainly a good idea to ask the performers about the raagas in advance. However often the performers don't know what exactly they will sing. The performance typically takes different turns as it progresses. They're usually are inspired by (aamad) new thoughts and ideas that come to them as they begin to sing and they allow themselves to be transported to different compositions and raagas. This is specially so in a more soulful baithak as opposed to a concert style setting. For example the girah with Sultan Bahu's poetry came about due to a short conversation prior to the baithak in which we spoke of that kalam. Ustadji thought of it as he was singing and decided to switched over to it as it provided a perfect bridge to another idea/verse that could be included. Qawwali performances are bit like jazz that is often unplanned and goes with the flow. I suspect you already know all this but my response could be of interest to others.
@indetif8399 ай бұрын
Qawwals have the legitimacy to "twist" and mix the raags. They have always had the leeway to adjust them according to the poetry and performance situation. But generally they follow at least the basis of classical raags . There are many studies that detail this.

@@arifkhan100 Great points, Arifji, and all well-received. This channel is a huge goldmine and the efforts of the tDJ team are not going unnoticed! I agree that artists chase spontaneous inspiration and that’s what adds a lot of charm to the performances. My request was more about the beginning or the refrain in the presentations, as I would think that regardless of anything else, they will be set to at least a dhun of a raga. Sort of like (and this is a terrible analogy) the underlying chord changes in jazz over which improvisations are done. Anyway, it’s always a fun exercise to try to figure it out yourself! Regarding girahs, appreciate your insights about the Sultan Bahu material. Some of my favorite qawwals from yesteryear used a lot of them. What a pleasure to be in modern times where your team allows us the privilege of accessing such wonderful intimate recordings. Please invite Ustad Nizamiji’s team more often, if possible. Very sureela! I’ll also collect his contact info from your other comment and see if they’re coming down my neck of the woods anytime. Would love to catch a live performance.
@eus89649 ай бұрын
@@indetif839 Yes, of course! My comments were simply trying to explain what I thought was going on in the performance and not concerned with (il)legitimacy at all. This is multiple hundred years old tradition with its own mature musical vocabulary and grammar. No studies are required for legitimizing anything. Ustadji is a higher authority in this respect.
