This composition had been used as example in the italian youtube cultural video "Lezioni di Musica - Survivorship Bias" of the channel "musicamonteverde". Is a really very very interesting video of this new interesting channel

Wow… Thanks for this video. I’ve never seen Hamelin so young and it’s wild to see how flawless his technique was even at 27. As soon as I saw his hands I was like “Yep, that’s definitely Hamelin!” That hairstyle looks disastrous though 😂😭

this Hamelin is a THUNDERER...fiendish!

Amazing to hear the differences in his playing compared to his current recordings. This one has some immaturity to it which I can only describe as laxness in interpretation mixed in with a fraction of too much pedal, lacking razor sharp precision and very distinct interpretational qualities found in the modern Hamelin. However it is unmistakable; the perfection of technique of the legato and staccato, bellish sound of the piano, exquisite dolce like the vanilla icecream of a three starred Michelin, and most notably scales played as if they were glissandos. Utterly remarkable.

This performance is more measured, like 4:14 - which is too fast/less clean in the more recent recording. Also very hard to determine whether there is too much pedal being played here, as the audio quality is low.

Thanks for this archive! I'm always so surprise how disgusting the sound recording could be in 1988, it doesn't make sense, some records of 60" years of piano sounds way better.

Probably because it's tv broadcast

@@randmgenericname5077 It's clearly been recorded on some dodgy bit of kit - cassette, quite likely, via who knows what sort of tortuous signal path. If the OP wants to send me the source file I can probably restore it to some extent.

Can I suggest that Alkan, despite Hamelin's advocacy, is the worst composer in Western musical history?

There's tens of thousands of contenders to that title. But they're all forgotten. Rightly so. Of the somewhat famous ones, Vivaldi, Donizetti, Satie, Schnittke, Pärt, Max Richter definitely trump Alkan.
