Mr. Hamelin has a natural talent, no amount of practicing can produce this supple ease of technique. I mean his technical equipment rises way and above beyond that of most other international concert pianists. Maestro Katsaris who himself has similar pianistic facility is full of admiration and praise for mr. Hamelin.

I've had a montra for years now that if you want to hear a piece of music played well, you should probably listen to Marc-André Hamelin.
@pushkinthegreatАй бұрын
Hamelin lacks technique compared to even the young Claudio Arrau. Cortot, Hofmann, Grunfeld, Rachmaninoff, Lhevinne, and many others have a much better technique then him.

Sounds almost identical to Moszkowski. I wouldn't be surprised if the story of him losing it to Schlözer in a card game is true. I mean after all, what else has Schlözer written that is regularly played?

The standard against which performances of this piece are judged is the 1933 performance by Eileen Joyce kzbin.info/www/bejne/aWi6ln-pmMuSpqM She had to contend with critics who did not thing much of British performers (she was Australian) and they snubbed her because she was a fashion display when she came on stage. She is SERIOUSLY underrated. She was as popular as Gracie Fields and Vera Lynn during WW2. Her technical proficiency can be gauged by the above performance, but besides being able to play very fast, she had precise tempo, the notes were even, touch was constant, and she was able to inject nuances.She had a level of technical expertise which, coupled with her musical intelligence, nuances and phrasing place her among the greats. One famous German critic after her concert with the Berlin Philharmonic compared her with Clara Shumann and other greats. A well known critic in the USA said she was the greatest unknown pianist there had been. It is worth taking a close look at Eileen Joyce on youtube, especially the Mozart sonatas.

@francispott83867 жыл бұрын
I have heard Hamelin rise to even higher levels than this in the same piece at other recitals. It needs to be borne in mind that this is not merely a concert performance, but an encore at the end of a mammoth programme - most of us would be on our faces. Frankly I think it's ridiculous to imply that Hamelin gives no thought to the pedalling, though. It's also questionable whether this piece *needs* 'wit'. One could argue that treating it with greater seriousness pays it the compliment it deserves.
@grigorpetrov8006 Жыл бұрын
It's too easy for him. He still needs to hear the inner sense of the music. He plays it just like an etude rather than a real piece of music finely chiseled and appropriately ardorous.
