TheKaiDino Sucks ya i like how the song evolved to be rlly focused on her pain and how she made a decision to erase herself from his story (decision making is what most songs are for) but i like how she was burning him in this old vers too, he rlly deserved it. but the final vers has some of that burning in it in like the climax when it’s like “u forfeit all rights to my heart...” till the end. the old vers also had more tell and not show like “im not naive.” i love both concepts and im very attached to all of elizas songs they are truly beautiful

Honestly, the way I interpret the title of this song is that this is the first time Eliza is confronting her anger with her husband’s behavior. She hates the way he never has time for her, she hates the way he flirts with everyone, and she hates his obsession with his reputation and his legacy but she’s *never* said anything about it. Her breaking point, was when he cheated on her. That’s when her emotions couldn’t be bottled up anymore so this song, while it’s mainly about him cheating, it’s about also about those things too, and those little things she brings up when she says “they are your legacy, we are your legacy” or “you enemy whispers so you have to scream” is her confronting him about those things too :)

"And when the time comes Explain to the children The pain and embarrassment You put their mother through When will you learn That they are your legacy?" My husband left me when I was 4 months pregnant with our second child and just last month he officially moved across the country to live with his girlfriend. I have a feeling that Eliza asked her about and angelica told her the truth or that Angelica came foward with the truth about her feelings for angelica and it most likely happened after his death cause even Eliza knew that Angelica got a different side of ham. Although if Peggy was still alive when ham died then Eliza would have had so much more to contribute to Hamiltons story and legacy

That’s so true! My interpretation of this would be that Rachelle is the disgusted woman, Shoba is the slighted mother, Lexi is the girl who believed in true love, Arianna is the subservient wife, but I’d disagree on Julia I’d think of her more as the side of Eliza that has been disappointed by Hamilton. Being able to dissect the characters in all these different ways shows how great the acting is on top of these amazing vocals and this is really a masterpiece!

"when will you learn that they are you legacy, we are your legacy" i personally think that this line shows that Hamilton was so focused on making sure he had physical evidence of his part in the creation of America to preserve his legacy that he neglected another part of his legacy, his family. it's such a powerful line in this version of the song. the entire song is amazing in either version too.

I really wish Lin would have kept the line, "I see how you look at my sister" in the final version. Angelica and Alexander's little thing they had was so obvious that there's no way she couldn't have known, and I always wanted to know how Eliza felt about it. Also, it just expresses how much pain Alexander has been putting Eliza through even before the Reynolds Pamphlet. That little line is just so powerful in my opinion.

+I'm_A_Bookworm FALSE. Historically, Peggy and Alexander were close friends. Platonic friends. He was with her on her death bed while he was in her town for work. Peggy asked him to stay so he did and kept Eliza updated on how she was doing as she was far out of town. He was with her when she died and in the letters that they PLATONICALLY wrote to each other when Alexander first began courting Eliza, we can see that they were only friends. Don't spout off nonsense.

"I see how you look at my sister." *D A M N.* I (kinda) get why they didn't include this in the Broadway show, but I wish they at least included this line. This line is Eliza telling Alex that no, he's not as slick as he thinks he is, and yes, she _did_ catch all those times he was stealing glances at her sister. It always irked me that in the musical Eliza seemed to have no idea what was going on between the two because honestly, he was being kinda obvious. In this case, she's always known, but decided not to say anything until Alex pushed her too far. It would've shown how much he took her kindness for granted, and how much he screwed up by royally pissing off even someone as sweet and forgiving as Eliza. You got what you wanted, Ham, but you lost what you had.
@pls5161
@pls5161 4 жыл бұрын
dude. That would have put the cherry on top in the musical. Like, the music would go all deep, as would the lights, everything pausing/moving slowly. It would all just wrap up quickly that ham really went to far. Honestly, the setting in those few seconds would go so smooth, that it’d be a part people would rewind to watch again. If the musical contained that magic and power into Eliza’s song, the audience would feel their heart drop. Especially from our light hearted kind and forgiving Eliza. Dang, thinking about it rn already giving me chills.

I kind of like that they didn’t, because it really just reinforces Eliza’s trusting nature and her relationship with her sister e.g. “You will never find anyone as trusting or as kind” etc. the fact that she trusted Hamilton so much just makes this betrayal even more devastating.

How stupid she felt for falling for a facade of love And god the line "I see how you look at my sister" leaves such a sour tone as if she knows it was never her who could satisfy him, but that didn't matter because she loved him. This version just shows how pissed Eliza truly was and in the end you can just imagine tears of anger dripping down with the screams of *"We are your legacy!"* Everyone did such an amazing job! Okay, this is a side of Eliza we never got to see in the musical; it shows the fact that Eliza wasn't that oblivious to the fact that her husband has charmed many women, in fact, she is perfectly aware of Hamilton and Angelica's 'rendezvous' ("I see how you look at my sister,"). The lyrics here shows that Eliza isn't just angry about Hamilton cheating on her with another woman, she's angry about a lot of things that was never mentioned in Burn. I'm sorry if that was too long, words just can't convey on how much I love this ❤ edit: I just realized that "I don't know who you are" contrasts the line from That Would Be Enough, where Eliza says "I know who I married."

_god_ I love the new take this can give on her character. the added fury of having almost seen this coming ("I see how you look at my sister"/"I have seen women around you") is just so. _damn_ . Edit: also, some of the lyrics mean more when sung by this group than they would just by one Eliza. " _we_ are your legacy" would only mean "me and the children" if sung solo, but in the group it sounds more like literally "all of us here singing", giving it that extra layer of meta that this musical loves

love this. love that the way the intro this sounds, clear as always, but this version is somehow eerie for some reason? like it sounds kind of disconnected?? haunting? and kind of faded, like it's from a dream or a recollection.. so good.

This whole thing makes me even more wishing for a different staging of "Burn". In my ideal vision, Eliza would not be alone on that bench, sad, watching the letters burn. She would be with Alexander on stage. And everytime he'd speak she would cut him. Imagine how powerful this would have been : litterally the only moment of the whole play where he would've been here, and yet completely silent, unable to speak. She would've been the only person ever who could've made him "talk less".

OH MY GOD YAAAAAASSSSS thats exactly what I was thinking!!!!!!!!! The song whould have made much more of an impact on the entire musical! I also admire the fact on how detailed the song is and gives a better insight into Eliza's mind The origial version shows how sympathetic and heartbroken Eliza but this is on a completely different scale! This showcases how powerful Eliza is and the way that they portray Eliza taking her heartbreak is pheonominal! I commend everyone in this vid cuz even though this song ain't official, it is my favorite and should be given more attention

You should listen to "Congratulations" (if you haven't) which was cut from the Broadway version - Angelica actually does just that. Every time he starts to speak up, she just flat out cuts him off. There's a Ham4Ham video of Elise singing it at Lin's request. In the older drafts of "Hamilton", the Schuyler Sisters tear him apart over this. I like to think that they still did so, we just don't see it on stage.

I love how this song perfectly portrays each of Eliza's sides just coming together to prove to Alexander Hamilton that she was supposed to be the one for him. It really brings our each emotion, especially through the voices. I also love this song with my entire heart, definitely my most favored even though it's not in the original play. I feel like Burn makes Eliza seem more passive somehow. In Burn she's sad, she's... Well, helpless. We feel sorry for her; we want to protect her. In First Burn, however, we see a completely different side, the burning anger. She wasn't just the sweet and naive wife, "[she] see[s] how [Alex] look[s] at [her] sister" but she decided to trust him anyway. She's not as fragile here, which I think it's important, because she IS strong. She went through so much after that and she still had a kind heart nonetheless, which is way harder than becoming bitter after so much pain. Basically, even though I absolutely LOVE the poignant angry pain of First Burn, with all the raw truths Eliza throws around like darts... I also believe the disappointment is WAY more visible when she's sad (in Burn, I mean). Burn it's more like a cold burn; you don't really expect it to hurt so much as it does. Also, it is in Burn that she talks about Alex's writing, which is a big deal since it's something he's always been proud of ("your sentences border on senseless/and you are paranoid in every paragraph”), so saying that is a way to hit him while keeping her characteristic sweetness. What I'm trying to say is: Both versions have their own merits and I can't just choose one (please don't make me). I'm just glad that this version exists and that we get to hear it, because it adds even more layers to the masterpiece that is this musical.

Burn is so delicate. She behaves like a lady, first burn is just anger and hate being thrown at him and insults and petty digs whereas in burn she takes the high road which is why I prefer it. She is stronger in burn because she doesn’t get angry in a violent way. She doesn’t give him the pleasure of seeing her fight back she just lets it happen which I find more admirable because I’d for sure freak out if my husband had an affair. But she doesn’t which I thinks says a lot more about her character than first burn does

After getting emotionally cheated on, this song really resonates with me and I really agree with Lin's argument that after this version of 'Burn' Forgiveness was not an option. However, in the end, they should have sung 'If you thought I was yours - don't". That seems more truthful.

"And when the time comes, explain to the children the pain and embarrassment you put their mother through. When will you learn that they are your legacy, WE are your legacy" Those lines are so incredibly powerful they moved me to tears (I'm not an emotional person). It isn't really touched on in the musical, but just imagine how Alex and Eliza's children must have felt when they found out what their father had done. Then there's the fact that Alex is so totally obsessed with his legacy that he neglected his children and his wife, the people who TELL HIS STORY.
