I believe this is the Best version of Hamlet done yet. I can watch it over and over.

Best version I've seen of Hamlet, and this is one of the great scenes ever filmed of a Shakesperean or any production. I've watched the long version of this film about 10 times and never tire of it. Almost all the roles are brilliantly acted, Derek Jacobi is powerful as Claudius, and the cinematography, the settings, costumes and soundtrack are top class. I think the costumes of the era used are perfect, resonant of a fairly distant past, but of a style not too far removed from our times

Best version of Hamlet EVER done! Branagh's a genius, at least with anything Shakespeare. What is being said in this scene is the important part.

This remains the best Hamlet scene on film. It's always how I picture it--he's not only just speaking to the audience through the mirror, but also to himself, as if he is trying to convince himself of the best course of action he should take. Branagh does a haunting job. There is no theatrics, no overacting, just pondering.

I think he captures hamlet perfectly with his tone of voice. His tone shifts between dark, confused, and philosophical. Also, I think that the mirror adds to the scene because it helps make the audience feel cold just like the person playing Hamlet.

He doesn't actually say "to sleep no more" but pauses between the two phrases as is written in the script cleverly implying that death is no more than sleeping. He did a great job at doing that and this is by far the best version of the soliloquy I've seen yet. If you really feel you know the script and meaning like the back of your hand, then you should recognise this. We all have different views on what is good and bad but there's no need to call this actor 'a dick' and insult other's opinions

Shakespeare tries to get to the root of why humans really bear their ills; why we don't "opt out" when things get hard. He posits that it is not because of some great strength of will, but rather our fear - the fear that things could possibly be worse. No matter how bad things get we are afraid it could be even worse. Death is, after all, an undiscovered country. Not sure I agree with Hamlet, but it is an interesting stance. One that is darkly honest in ways we may not like to admit.

This was my favorite version of Hamlet. This scene is what made filming at the winter palace the perfect palce for it. There's also a new Hamlet, just came out today, set in modern times, using this same kind of idea, with a two way mirror and security cameras watching him as he speaks.

THX. I just did it this morning and I must say i was nervous like hell, but somehow I was able to say it all without any error. And when I finally finish, my hands were trembling. But the teacher and all my class were stunned. Man I never want to play Hamlet again. :)

Woah. i'm not surprised this video has 40 pages of comments. Branagh is my ultimate Hamlet. The words live, because Shakespeare was always meant to be acted, heard, seen, not simply read in ones mind. This soliloquy is most likely one of the greatest known and apprieciated pieces in literature, performance and life. Thank you.

the great thing about this monologue is that it covers such a wide range of emotions so if you are doing it then you can place emphasis on any one of them and it can be good. David tennant played into the suicidal aspects of Hamelt and KB obviously has played more into his anger and his frutration at the pain and injustice of this life.

Not to disappoint anybody but I think the main purpose of the mirror is to make the staging more interesting and cinematic. It also gives a needed focus to the soliloquy and allows Branagh to deliver the speech slowly, without it becoming static.

I love this tragedy by hamlet especially this monologue. To be means that he would cope with the situation he is in (what his mother did, what his uncle did, what his friends did) and that means life but misery and mental death. Not to be means to fight everything that is bad (such as treachery) and that may costs his life yet that would mean life for him. Absolutely love it

We watched this along with the 1992 Mel Gibson version. As part of my A-Level English Literature course. I remember my teacher preferred the Gibson version. His narration of the Walking with Dinosaurs saga was also splendid.

I love when Kenneth Branagh does Shakespeare. He does it all so well. And for everyone dissing him, if you were to read it over the top, it wouldn't be realistic. This is how a person who contemplates suicide would think. And if you were to notice that he IS actually in time. Compare him to other people trying to play Hamlet; trust me, it will be extremely difficult to find someone better

@upeiballer15 where did it say that hamlet was 30? I don't remember reading anything of hamlet's age from the play, but it's assumed that (in the time period where living to the age of 50 is considered impressive), as prince and due to his sometimes immature and unstable demeanour he can't be on the older side of the spectrum.

It may not seem that artistic because you have grown up in a world post-Shakespeare. His ideas and genius have been built upon and expanded to include a million different things. In 1603 when this was first performed, it was original, unique, and something the audience had never seen before. It was dramatic and heart-poundingly real.

@garrrynec I live in Toronto, and went to school here, and you're right the basic mandate for the curriculum of these plays is only in Ontario and British Columbia. But there are many teachers in Ontario who dont follow curriculum, and more importantly its not so much the mandate as it is the quality of the teaching that irks me anyway. And I dont know what its like in the U.S. but evidently its important isnt stressed there either.
@superstaractress10112 жыл бұрын
Kenneth's emotion in this soliloquy is incredible. However, I thought he rushed through some of the more subtle ideas such as, "ay there's the rub." I suppose Kenneth meant to play it as a rush of madness, not thinking straight, yet I personally interpreted as Hamlet being in a trance, yet every idea still striking loud and clear. As I have heard, I definitely agree with Claudius in the mirror being a both literal, yet metaphorical reflection of his reasoning for the soliloquy itself. Beautiful
