We get a lot of questions about our hammers, so this week we are taking a walk through the shop to show our hammers off! Murray will discuss each hammer along with its use, giving an overview as well as an in-depth explanation about hammer forged finishes.

Murray, thank you for posting these videos on youtube. For the first time I'm able to get knives hair shaving sharp. I bought two grits of sandpaper and attached it to wood blocks for makeshift stones and I stroped on newspaper. The knife i sharpened is an old kitchen knife that was so dull i could turn my fingers white pressing so hard on the edge and drag them across without cutting myself. I really appreciate what you do.

I was finally able to get my carter neck knives sharp. No idea why it took so long to figure out. Maybe the Rockwell being 64. But I can get it super sharp on the 1000 king. When I try to strop it or move to the the 6000 polishing stone, I just end up dulling it. So now I just stop before those steps. Carter knives are the best. My next is going to be a Muteki, I love Jamison’s knives too. Now that I have two from the man himself, I’m ready to add some other neck knives from the other smiths. Can’t wait to come out and see the shop one of these days now that I have family in Portland.

thepowerbill1 I had the same issues before. What worked for me was making sure I was super paranoid about keeping a consistent angle and using lighter pressure than the 1000 stone. Hope this helps!

For most everyday tasks, a 1000 grit edge will work just fine, if not better. That extra "toothiness" will give you a lot of slicing authority. Many western bladesmiths will use the old Norton India stone and a strop. The India stone is around 320 grit.

nietztsuki I get a nice toothy edge at 6000 that seems to grab better than 1000 but to each their own!

With that beautiful spring hammer it's amazing how many other hammers one tends to need. I own quite a few that don't see much action - but they are staying! Enjoyed this .👍

Murray I love the all the history in your tools. Always interesting! Just want to let you know you got me into bladesmithing about 5 years ago. I have always wanted to take your classes but haven’t been able to afford it yet. Maybe one day you can have a little competition and give the winner a free class! Maybe even do more videos like Tyler Pomeroy. But anyway I’ll keep watching so stay sharp! 😉

Hi Murray I noticed your anvil is higher than recommended. I would appreciate your insight on his subject. I’m new to smithing and feel like my anvil should be higher for both control and vision. Thanks for sharing your knowledge.

Hello Murray, would you please advise where can I get a Taganeh hammer similar to yours, I can't find it anywhere. And as always, your videos are very informative. Thank you

What is the raised lump in the face of your anvil, near the horn? Is it a tool mounted in your hardy hole?

I second this. I was thinking of how to make a large Japanese Waterstone that could be mounted to a normal knife grinder. Are those aluminum wheels? Did you buy or build them? Thank you

Our water wheels are custom built for us, (with the older ones having pieces built by Murray himself.) After our newest one, we are actually able to help those who would like one built themselves! I will have to ask Murray about what the wheels are made out of!

Hello, we have one in the shop right now! That said, I can check and see if there are any others coming up in the next batch, or if you would like one, see if I can get one of the smiths to make one in the batch after!
