About Hammerfest
(From Wikipedia)
Hammerfest is a city and municipality in Finnmark county, Norway. The municipality encompasses parts of three islands: Kvaløya, Sørøya, and Seiland. Hammerfest was established as a municipality on 1 January 1838 (see formannskapsdistrikt). The law required that all cities should be separated from their rural districts, but because of low population, and very few voters, this was impossible to carry out for Hammerfest in 1838. (See also Vadsø and Vardø.) The rural district of Hammerfest (Sørøysund) was separated from the city on 1 January 1852, but it was merged back into the city on 1 January 1992 (but without the area of Kvalsund, which was separated from Sørøysund as a municipality of its own in 1869).
Hammerfest - the name
The town is named after an old anchorage. The first element is hammer, referring to a number of large rocks, good for mooring boats, called Hamran (Old Norse: Hamarr - steep mountainside). The Hamran were covered up in land reclaiming during the early post-war years. The last element is fest, from Old Norse festr which means 'fastening' (for boats).
Coat-of-arms
The coat-of-arms is from relatively modern times. They were granted on 16 December 1938. The arms of Hammerfest, a silver polar bear on a red background, were prepared for the celebration of the 150th anniversary of the town's foundation in 1939. The polar bear was chosen as a symbol for the fishing in the polar seas north of Norway. The polar bear itself is not native to mainland Norway.

I lived in Hammerfest way back in 1962 and it was much smaller then. I was also in the hospital there in 1964 and have not been back since then. Norway was really the best country in the world in those days but no longer.

why no longer ? (sincerously)

Claus Valca Row While I have not been in Hammerfest since 1964 I was in Norway eight years ago during that really hot summer of 2006 and I did not like the Third World infringement on Norwegian culture. Simply put, there are just too many immigrants in proportion to the number of ethnic Norwegians. And most of these immigrants have no intention of assimilating and therefore their culture will eventually come into greater conflict with Norwegian culture.
@Marcfj
@Marcfj 9 жыл бұрын
***** Yes, they do have this problem but I think it is more of a problem in Norway because they have a higher percentage of non Western immigrants there than the other countries do.

@@Marcfj I'm just 7 years late to comment. Your opinion might be considered racist by some. But, I'm with you on this one. I'm Indian BTW and I don't like my fellow countrymen breeding like shit and spreading their shit everywhere. The worst thing is they take great pride in doing so. Not realising all they are doing is just polluting this world...I could rant on, but I'll stop...

I'm sure that this place looks wonderfull to my eyes but.... I' m also sure that i couldn't rexist more than a month. Maybe, with a good job ,a good flat, good friends and some italian food (i live between Venezia and Italian Alps) it could change aspect. Anycase respect to this wonderfull place.

Jethr0 Well I guess there's where humans are different. When it's winter and dark, the city is lit up, we're well dressed so it's not cold, and it's just lovley :P Summer is also good, because it gets dark enough, but not entirely dark. Very safe and quiet, and yeah.. I just think it's lovley
