Greetings everyone! In today's episode I'll be building Eduard's fantastic FW190A-8 kit in 1/48 scale. I enjoyed this build much more than I was expecting to and tried out some new to me painting techniques and I think I've finally got a handle on Eduard's new type decals.

@57:12min That is a component (Antenna) of one of the world’s first Identification Friend or Foe (IFF) units that allows ground-based radar to identify the aircraft as friendly. The unit receives impulses from "Freya" or "Würzburg" radar stations. When enabled and properly set with the day’s codeword, the FuG 25a replies with a pre-defined signal that the ground station can process to identify the unit as friendly. The FuG 25a operates in the frequency range of 125 +/-1.8 MHz, with the operating range of up to 100 km. Lovely build!

Yes, this was brilliant, thanks so much for sharing. Great painting and weathering too, the post-shading worked very nicely. Also the wash you used was very interesrting, being so simple (and cheap) to create and offering results that are indistinguishable from more expensive products. I guess one huge advantage of watercolors is that they can be re-activated with even a little moisture and they can be wiped off as much as you like (contrary to all acrylic washes and their infamous tidemarks - unless you use artists' gouache acrylics, which also re-activate, to make a custom home brew...). So great idea! Please do more of these longer videos, they are much better for reference, instruction and inspiration. The A-8/R2 version had the outer wing 20 mm MG-151 cannons replaced by 30 mm MK 108 cannons for a harder punch against the bombers. The Mk-108 was a short barrelled cannon, and its barell did not protrude much through the wing's leading edge, but required that "bump" on the wing upper surface, to fit inside the wing. In some of these later Sturmböcke versions of the FW-190, as you correctly guessed, the cowling machine guns firing through the propeller were removed both to save weight, and because they were relatively ineffective against the heavy allied bombers. So the Luftwaffe preferred to save the weight of the machine guns and their ammo and add the much heavier Mk-108 30mm cannons on the outer wings and in some cases also add underwing rocket pods. And yes the little fan at the front, obstructing a lot of the the view of the engine, is the BMW 801 cooling fan 🙂

@@HammerheadModelMaking dude, your washing kungfu is powerful in its water basedness, but my enamel kungfu is superior in its results. find a paint range that works for you with a simple white spirit base, I use humbrol with success (your mileage may vary but) once you get into diluting actual enamel pigments flesh can become relatively simple... and all the dirt in the world is at your brush tip... good hunting

Hey Brett, Yep I really like the longer format. I may disagree with you about small PE parts as I lost a couple of bits for the instrument panel of the P-39,but also i need to re-plan my entire modelling set up to make it not so vulnerable to having pieces ping all over the place. A really nice result overall and I'm taking away a couple more techniques.👍👍

I definitely prefer the long versions of your videos. They are fun to watch. Congratulations on the beautiful Fw 190. I don't know much about Luftwaffe planes, but a friend once told me that when the limousine was moved aside, the antenna wire fell freely onto the fuselage - it was not flexible.

I think you have done a spectacular job on this build. I also enjoyed the longer format. It did not waffle on and was constantly informative. My only critique is on some of the colour choices. My research over the years on the Fw190 has found that the interior was painted RLM66, which is a very similar tone to the German grey you used. It is a little more blue however and this can be seen in the colour of the photo etched cockpit panels. The upper colours were RLM74 and RLM75, with the lower surfaces being RLM76. Wheel wells, inside gear doors, and the internals of structures except the cockpit were RLM02. That includes the undercarriage legs. The problem with these Luftwaffe aircraft though is very late in the war they used a whole bunch of different colours. Eduard have been pretty good of late with getting their colour call outs on point. The RLM80 you used on top of your build was seen together with RLM79 sandgelb on Luftwaffe aircraft in the North African theatre. Regardless of these colour call outs it’s a beautiful build, it looks fantastic and you should be very proud of your efforts. Thank you for sharing with us and keep up the great work.

The best fw-190A in the scale but still with a slightly fluegwerke non-tapering cowling... The forward ring moved back and forth as the oil ran through it: The gap could be small or big depending on engine temperature. The better Hasegawa cowling will fit, but it is a lot of work. Good work!

The main thing for me is that if you're doing 1/72, I won't bother watching. At my age with my eyesight it's too small for me to build. When it comes to length, I like the longer videos. I think I've spent over 3 hours watching two of your videos this evening and enjoyed every minute (B1 and FW 190). I'm currently building the Tamiya Spitfire Mk.I that comes with the Austin 10 Utility vehicle. The Austin has turned out to be a fun little diversion. I've looked at the Tamiya FW 190 with Citroën staff car on Scalemates, and in those instructions, it's painted in a pale green.

I’ve only built one Eduard kit, but I love ‘em! I set my decals in place using Micro-Set, but did wait 24 hours minimum. Then used a brush with Mineral Spirits to remove the carrier film. Personally, I think doing separate video “chapters” will retain viewers. I did it tonight, but it’s hard to watch an hour + video in one sitting. I think 15-25 minutes is preferable. Just my two cents. Turned out great! Peace and love.

Dance or some of your questions, number one the fan is to help with cooling of the radial, because it made the front opening smaller than it would normally be to have better dynamic. Vallejo makes a German aircraft box set of paint. I’ll have to look home to see if it has the interior color in it, but there are multiple different interior colors, depending on when and where is a plane was built. The original purpose of the FW 190 was to supplement the BF 109. They ended up making one of the best fighters in the war as a supplement. The British gave it the nickname the butcher bird. On some models, the upper gun ended up getting towed over because they removed due to weight. Small caliber of those particular weapons those weapons, being 7.92 caliber were less effective against heavier target. The wing gun were primarily 20 mm Canon. I loved the long format video, and I loved you showing all of your techniques that I want to emulate some of my models.

The A-7 and A-8 carried the MG13113mm in the cowl. The A-6 and earlier carried the MG17 7.92mm in the cowl. But yes, the removal of the cowl machine guns were for weight saving and probably unnecessary given the 20mm and 30mm wing mounted cannons.

This video format is awesome, perfection, ditactic, really thank you. I'm going to respond to your request for a comment or remark, I'd really like to have in the description the list of components, tools and the top, links on amazon, ebay... for the most emblematic components you've used in this video. I'm quibbling, but it would be a real bonus to what is already a very fine piece of work. You've got one more subscriber.

You did such a great job on this, seriously. There are only a couple of internet model makers that I watch regularly & you are one of those. I always learn something when I do watch. Keep the great work! BTW: this video was a little too long for my taste & practical time available to watch something this long on a regular basis.

Brett, My brief research shows RLM66 dark grey for the cockpit and the rest of the interior to be RLM02 grey-green. For RLM66 Tamiya XF 63 German Grey is a close match. Its often noted that anything from mid to late 1940 could be in 66. For RLM02, what I have found is that the Luftwaffe cockpits were usually painted in one of two colors, RLM 02, a light to medium green gray similar to field gray, or RLM 66, a dark gray. Later in the war, it seems that RLM 66 became the standard for cockpits. RLM 02 appears more common on early war cockpits of fighters, dive bombers, and similar sized aircraft. RLM 02 in the Vallejo range is no.886 which is called Green Grey and is a green color. (Mostly copy and paste from threads on FSM).

There is a small rectangular door on the left side below he cockpit entrance. When you look at aircraft these are indents so the pilot can push his foot in to climb into the cockpit. It should be weathered appropriately as his boots rest on this spring loaded panel as they climb in, Some scratches might be appropriate. The panel pops back out once the foot is removed. Many aircraft use these. In WW1 there were semi circular cut outs in the metal or fabric to put their feet into.Hey, Great work!

Brilliant build dude! Love it! 190 is one of my faves. When it comes to Luftwaffe RML colours is un like most nations there is not much in the way if documentation to know the exact colours. I find anyone calming what should be the right RML colour normally has no idea what there on about plus, and this is something they dont take in consideration that is documented is that depending on factory paint stocks are will depend on what it comes out like. They were told what the colours should be an what ratios ‘should be’ wont mean they will come out like that so there is nor real right or wrong colour also you can calm ‘its been out side along time!’ The undercarriage bays some times will be the same colour as the under side and some are a odd grey brown. Your right in the nose guns they were deleted on some to reduce the wight if these already heavy aircraft. I love eduard kits but i dont like there decals! But i have found using white spirits on a cotton bud works really well, so you can still put it on the conventional way and so you can do decals as normal then use the spirits on a bud and it will come way easy!

Hi, thank you for another fantastic video, and fantastic work. I'm following your work for a very long time. I found them extremely good, helpful, and instructive. This format of the video is very good, and i would like to see more (especially ww2 german aircrafts) of them. I personally dont have any luck spraying Vallejo colours, so i would like to give a few comments concerning colours. IMHO Mr. Aquaeos' range of colours is better and more accurate. Especially for interiors of german aircraft. Those paints are also water acrylic. As i said, that is from my experience. I always get awkward finish with Vallejo paints. That being said, i prefer ammo mig over Vallejo. I do use ammo mig rlm 66, 74, 75 76, and rlm 02 for the wheel base, for late german aeroplanes. I tone them with a drop of white for highlighting. As i understand the subject, rlm66 (cockpit colour) is german black/grey used for tanks adopted, because of glare issues of rlm 02. as i understand somewhere in 1942. 5hat is again my understanding of the matter. Once again, thank you for a great video. i do look forward to another detail very detailed video.

Kirk Tank designed the 190 to be easy to fly, reduce the pilot workload and ease of field maintenance. It had a single lever engine control that was years ahead of it's time. Not as agile as the 109 but very rugged and easy to keep flying.

Hi Brett, yes please, the more you show the better I like it. I can't say I'm re-learning modelling skills because forty odd years ago when I was last regularly making models, the only techniques I knew were shake the paint well and try and find a smaller brush. Anyway, that is one lovely looking "Butcher Bird" (if such things can be called lovely but I hope you get my drift). Really, really nice, lots of Oohs and Aahs, and many thanks for sharing it with us. I had been wondering why heavily diluted acrylics weren't being used as washes, turns out they are, with the added magic ingredient of a surface tension killer. Do you happen to know whether soap or detergent makes a difference? Looking forward to your next "Masterclass", my regards....

Thank you so much for the kind words, regarding this watercolor wash, Dish soap vs dish detergent, I haven't tried detergent, so I'm not sure if it would have the same effect as the dish soap.

The FW 190 was one of the first radial engine fighters to use a streamlined cowling to fit a BMW-801 radial engine in as small a space as possible. The loss of cooling air was made up for by use of a cooling fan in front of the engine. Mitsubishi borrowed that idea for the high output Sakei radial in their J2M Raiden series of interceptors.
