3 Days of Hiking, Backpacking, & Rainy Hammock Camping in the Cranberry Wilderness using the Amok Draumr XL Hammock. www.sintax77.com
For this 3 day, 2 night spring backpacking trip, I’ll be hiking a 20 mile loop in West Virginia’s Cranberry Wilderness, part of the larger Monongahela National Forest. The specific area for this hike, located between the Williams River and the Cranberry River, is commonly referred to as the Cranberry Backcountry.
Official Cheeseburger Time Shirts
teespring.com/stores/sintax77...
For an easier read, check out my full blog post
www.sintax77.com/hammock-campi...
Each of the 3 days will be comprised of three different “vibes”. Day one will mostly be a lowlands hike in the woods, day two will be primarily along the the beautiful Cranberry River, and day three will be a mossy, higher elevation ridge hike along Kennison Mountain.
With a new Amok Fjol XL tarp in hand to thwart the forecast of rain, each night will be spent hammock camping and testing the new Amok Draumr XL hammock, which Amok kindly sent for evaluation.
No permit is required to camp in the Cranberry Wilderness, but there are rules and regulations regarding backcountry camping. You can find more information on the USFS Cranberry Wilderness website www.fs.usda.gov/recarea/mnf/r...
Full GPS track data, including campsites, water sources, etc, for this trip can be downloaded on in the above blog link or on my website’s Trip Data Page.
Trailhead Used: Kennison Mountain Trailhead Parking Lot, N38° 11.113′ W80° 16.837′
Hillsboro, WV 24946
Kennison Mountain Trailhead parking area has room for a half dozen dozen or so vehicles. No parking fee or permit required. Loop begins from the parking lot side of the road.
Trails Used, Day 1:
Begin at the Kennison Mountain Trail Parking Lot
At the intersection, head right (northeast) on the South Fork Trail
At the fire road, depart the South Fork Trail and head left (northwest) on the road.
Camp along the Cranberry River (1 mile after the bridge and South Fork Shelter)
This is a medium sized camping spot with space for multiple tents or hammocks. There’s an established fire ring with rocks for camp stoves, etc. It’s located right along the river, so there is no need to pack in water. If taken, there is another option one tenth of a mile up on the right, where Lost Run meets the Cranberry River.
Day 1 Mileage: 6 miles
Day 1 Gross Elevation Gain: 217 feet
Trails Used, Day 2:
Continue northwest on the fire road.
Camp along the banks of Cranberry River, near House Log Shelter
This is a large camping area with multiple tents or hammocks. There are spots to camp right by the shelter, or if it’s busier,, there are more options along the river, a few hundred yards downstream from the shelter. Established fire rings are at those locations, as well as by the shelter, which also has two picnic bench and a nearby privy. All of these spots are right along the river, so there is no need to pack in water.
Day 2 Mileage: 5 miles
Day 2 Gross Elevation Gain: 207 feet
Trails Used, Day3:
Continue a short distance southwest on the fire road.
At the sign for Kennison Mountain Trail, ford the Cranberry River (look for the blue diamond on the other side).
Stock up on water here, as it will be your last reliable source for the rest of the day.
Continue on Kennison Mountain Trail.
At the intersection with Frosty Gap Trail, head left (east) to stay on the Kennison Mountain Trail.
Pass intersection with South Fork Trail.
Return to parking lot.
Day 3 Mileage: 9 miles
Day 3 Gross Elevation Gain: 2,070 feet
Grand Total Mileage: 20 Miles
Grand Total Gross Elevation Gain: 2,494 feet

It was another great video. I so appreciate watching your backpacking trips. Question? Do you always go to the same place for a cheeseburger or hit local places? Thanks

I switch it up. Sometimes I plan a local spot based on research or viewer suggestions, sometimes I just drive until I see a mom and pop joint (I did that on this one, shout out to Sarah's Burgers and Shakes in VA), and sometimes I hit up a rest stop fast food burger on the trek home :D

Sean, A tip I use for my TP needs.. I remove the TP roll at home when it is half used, remove the inner paper tube, flatten the roll and put it into a zip lock bag, and collect them during the winter for summer hikes. No need to unwind TP from a full roll in the parking lot at the trailhead.

Love this video! This is where I had my 1st backpacking trip in the 90's. Try to make it there at least once a year. Fun fact. My dad & I tied up that cross pole in the camp you stayed in on night one. Used a giant tarp over it & setup our camp kitchen. We rode in on bikes that year. We had a group of 6 that year.

It is nice to see that the signs and shelters have not been vandalized. Your jeep seems to be in on piece after 3 days. If it was here out West, you would be lucky it would still be there up on blocks. When I have a want for a cheeseburger, I plug in my George Foreman Grill and throw in a frozen beef pattie. I use Kraft singles. Buns don't keep. I use whole wheat bread as a bun. I admire you melinials.

I was thinking the same thing when it started raining. That very well may have been why someone rigged it up like that. Although, I think a simple rope would have been easier and a bit more LNT friendly. UPDATE: Several viewers familiar with the horses and the area have mentioned that it's probably a high line for horses so they can lay at camp without getting tangled up. Considering the area and distance from road access, I would say that's a lot more likely than a pole for hanging deer. But who knows, maybe there are some really athletic hunters down in WV. The mystery continues...

I support the unpopular opinion that I don't want anyone to know where the hell I'm at. "I'm going camping and once I'm gone, I'm gone, deal with it. I'll either be coming home in 6 days or I won't, suck it up butter cup.
@LorddOfChaoss

I obviously don't care. Personal safety? Let me be the judge of MY personal safety. Or lack there of. Let's say I get attacked by something/someone & I'm suffering for days on end unable to reach help, I'm not going to go digging through my pack and say "oh good thing I brought my beacon!" Because a beacon is only good for telling someone where you're at, not when you need to be found.
@pomegranatepip2482
@pomegranatepip2482 4 жыл бұрын
Charlie Tecumseh it’s like a mobile phone. Just because you have it does not mean you need to switch it on. Same for a beacon. If you activate it, it tells the receiver that you need help. Simple enough.
@JasperJanssen
@JasperJanssen 3 жыл бұрын
Charlie Tecumseh uh... the whole point of those thing is *precisely* that they’re for telling people when you need to be found. The continuous tracking is an optional extra feature. If you fall and break your leg, that could be lethal or it could be just a not so fun time. That’s where a beacon is useful.

I came across this video trying to research camping hammocks. I’m an old Eagle Scout and current Assistant Scoutmaster so I have spent my share of nights in a tent......but I’m old and fat now, so comfort is my number 1 priority now. So far I have camped a total of 4 nights in a hammock and they were the most comfortable nights I ever spent camping. Unfortunately, My current hammock is really more of a backyard napping variety and isn’t really meant to be camping system. I have spent countless hours researching hammock systems and watching hammock “how to” videos but never could decide on what to buy until I saw this video. Today, I was lucky enough to get the last Draumr XL they had available in the outlet store. It is a “demo” model, but Amok assured me is is in like new condition and has the same warranty and guarantees as a new one. I cannot wait to try it out in 2 weeks when my son’s troop heads to the Sam Houston National Forrest and next month at Scout Summer Camp in Colorado. Thank you for sharing your adventures and knowledge. I look forward to watching many more of your videos.

Crazy small world, I camped at that same shelter “house log” 4 days after you were there. I just live about 30 miles from Cranberry, so it’s definitely a go to for my friends and I. Love the videos man, keep’em coming! Hope you make it back to WV again soon!

I work at Eagle Bluff Resorts on the Illinois River near Tahlequah Oklahoma and I can say people like to camp and view the stars. We are far enough away from the city and the stars are quite visible. Many of our guests from the Tulsa and OK City area love coming out and viewing the stars. We can even see some of the Milky Way when it is a new moon.

exactly. I bought a hard top for my wrangler for the expressed purpose of leaving it at a trail head worry free. an alarm system is not necessarily going to scare crime off my $35K+ truck in a remote location.

I have a 75 liter ruck around 50+lbs depending on what gear i need for fishing. I love your vlog man, new subscriber so i've only dipped my toes but so far the water is great! I'm also in PA, maybe one day we'll cross paths on the trail. Happy Hiking Brother!!

There were these two big peepal trees at my parents house so one of the trees had a big hole though its trunk... it just had been growing that way said the people who sold the property to my parents and another was bigger just next to it... so they formed a huge combined canopy under them... unless it was a huge storm thered be only a few droplets that would reach the soil around them... i remember having buy these huge ropes to make a hammock through the hole in one tree and going around the other and of course i watched my dad do the work while i watched... so during the monsoon dad assembled hammock for me and i slept there without the shade which my dad asked if i wanted and i refused to have it done... sleeping was fun until you realized the mosquitoes and the cold air... neverthless life was fun as a kid
