Not looking forward to the midges this summer.. they get worse every year. People from other countries need to know how bad they are. I remember seeing a Canadian comedian saying he went to Scotland and they had millions of these little invisible wasps 😂

Interesting how you refer to those pesky little biting insects. "If you … catch the MIDGE on a bad day, it can be horrendous." (23:39). Others in their comments say MIDGES, as I would too. And yet I'd happily use a singular form as plural when telling you that the curlew, rather than curlews, were back on the moorland hereabouts a week earlier than usual this year. It's a weird quirk of English, because it's not the same as 'one sheep - two sheep' or 'one deer - a dozen deer', which are nouns that never add a plural -s. Dropping the -s seems to happen with wild animals that come in herds, flocks and shoals, but I've never heard it applied to insects. 'The horsefly are biting with a vengeance today?' Nah. Oh, I dunno. Say it half a dozen times and it sounds kind of right. That means it's probably the go-to plural for woodsmen ...
@HighlandWoodsman2 жыл бұрын
😂 that's a very in depth analysis. It's something I've always said, perhaps it's a local thing where I am in the Highlands 😁
@tonyf99842 жыл бұрын
@@HighlandWoodsman May well be! It's hard not to notice such things after spending years teaching English to speakers of other languages - especially as you're such a clear and 'measured' speaker.
