You are doing it backward. Use a carabiner to attach the strap and run the line through the descender (rappelling) rings. Then use the line to pull the hammock tight.

Look up “Whoopie slings” made from 7/64” Amsteel Blue, which is all that’s needed. Those Rap Rings are SMC, Which are rated @ 14kn (#3147). SMC also makes a better rap ring but those are not circular in cross section which might not be good for this application. Omega Pacific also makes an improved, stronger Rap ring, but it might not be needed in this application. This cinch can also work with two, like, oval carabiners, but should be tested before trusting. This system also interrupts water coming towards your tent. The Whoopie Sling method does not unless additional preparations are done. Good video, Brah.

Thanks Reverend. Good information in your comment.

Have you found the rings to work as well on a line as the strap? I have mixed results on a line and usually back with a knot for safety sake.

I always tie a slippery knot after the rings. I like how can get the fine tension with the rings and then lock it in with a knot.
