Hammonds Pond Carlisle

A former brick works, Hammonds Pond is now a busy local park with many recreational opportunities. Hammond's Pond is situated on a hill at Upperby, to the south of the City of Carlisle.
In 1884 the land belong to Charles Bromley Brick Works, the waterlogged land being used to collect clay and make bricks
The land then came into the ownership of Archie Hammond who created one big pond from a series of smaller lakes, with the idea of creating a boating lake. He landscaped the area, built an animal house, tennis courts, a dance floor and flower beds. He called it "Pleasureland" and it openend on Whit Sunday in 1923
After the death of Archie Hammond the area became the property of the City Fathers in 1931, for the price of £1850
