I didn't come to radio via CB, but that doesn't mean I don't enjoy it! These handhelds provide a well deserved upgrade to the CB service by adding, FM and USB-C charging. They are simple to use and my family enjoys using them.

Apologies for double-commenting Josh but my first EVER DX contact was on 4W AM from England to Texas. Complete accident. Regular half-wave on the roof. And my friend Patrick, he had a QSO from England to Australia on a Radio Shack CB HT like the ones you are showing (but lots older) again on 4W with a rubber duck. RF is really quite amazing.

Congratulations on being the first KZbinr (that I am aware of) to mention the CTCSS feature, and certainly to actually demo it! This is a great feature that President dropped the ball on with their Randy II (USA) CB ht. The Randy III (Euro version) has CTCSS, but apparently President thought we Ameros are too stupid to make use of this wonderful feature.

My Ham Radio interest got started when my Canadian cousin gave me a set of those Archer Space Patrol walkie talkies and a crystal set kit. I had done some SWL but this made me decide to get a licence. I had to wait till I was 14 as we had an age restriction. 40 years later I am still doing radio. GM4SVM.

I think you could use the Argent Data ADS-SR1 Simple repeater module for these since these KG-S72c have a separate mic & speaker out plug. You'd need to DIY a cable (not that difficult). For those who don't know - simplex repeaters work a bit differently. Sort of like a message playback machine. Put the Simplex repeater up on your roof and easily triple your distance.

Josh, I never comment on videos. And let me preface this with the fact you are my favorite and most entertaining out of all the Ham "YouToubers" I follow, with KJ4YZI coming in a close second, even though you'd think I'd be biased living 1000ft from KC5HWB. Anyways I digress and wanted to say I LOVE the video and think it is supercool Wouxun came out with this. So to my comment, when you do the range test video(I can't wait), do it anywhere but channel 9. 9 is reserved for emergencies and traveler's assistance, that being said I wouldn't loose any sleep over it, because you'd have a better chance winnning the Mega and Powerball consecutively then you causing interference with that HT that delayed someone's well being, lol. Anyways keep putting out the content. Enjoy that beautiful So.Cal weather, haven't been since 2/2020..... 73's N8WWR Romie

For use at places that frequent trucks would be my best use idea. Would be nice to have an option other than the uniden wireless mic for out of truck comms or a a loader / spotter truck even. I could also see it being something to keep in the glove box when pulling a camper out other large contraption when parking or say boat launching. Many ways something can put this to valid use but I don't see DX as an option with this thing. Superbowl6 has users in excess of 15kw output power so yea. No telling of he was western us badlands or foreign lands.

Nice Walkie-Talkie, yet pricy. Once they drop to half the price, I might get one, or 2. Kinda funny though, when I started out as a CB'er at age 12 (many years ago), I had a 12 channel AM/FM base station with 0.5W. I grew up in Germany, so FM was introduced to CB in the early 80s with the plan to abandon AM entirely. So my next CB radio was a 4W 22 channel FM only device - very fancy. And then later I had a 40channel FM/12 channel AM radio with 4W on FM and 1W on AM. Now Germany allows 80 channels on FM, but still 12 channels (4-15) on AM with 1W. So this seems like a revolution

Since you brought t up… In an emergency (because this would break all sorts of FCC regs) it would be possible to use two of these together to increase range. you could set one up in a vehicle connected to an external whip antenna. It has a standard K type connector, so it would be easy to hook up a Surecom simplex parrot repeater. When one transmits on the rubber duck equipped radio the unit in the vehicle would receive the signal and then re-transmit it using the much more efficient whip antenna, greatly increasing the range. Do-able? Sure. Legal? Not so much. And probably not worth the bother IMHO. But in an emergency it would work.

@@RKingis yep, but they have a lot of names . The FCC refers to them as “parrot repeaters” because they don’t have to be simplex. I have mine set up to operate duplex, just with a gap between receiving and re-transmitting. But you are right. They are generally referred to as simplex repeaters.

I'd like to hear more about your thoughts on FM CB vs. GMRS and FRS. We have a farm with woods where we hunt. Cell reception isn't always great and our little FRS radios don't always work the best. I know I could go with a higher powered GMRS, but then everyone involved technically is supposed to have a license (Not going to happen) and it seems that a 4 watt FM CB would get better range given that it's HF and can better pass through trees and such. Am I right about that? Thanks!

I'm glad that they made these, and I definitely want to add one to my collection at some point. I like to carry a CB when I can, I have friends and family still on CB and CB is fun to listen to (sometimes), but they have always been bulky. My Midland 75-822 is reasonably portable but still way heavier than my boomfang and no FM or USB charging. I would not choose these over GMRS for family use. Simple fact is GMRS radios are still cheaper, smaller, lighter, etc and they have the benefit of standardization for repeaters and tones are more common usage. The odds of your child overhearing something foul on CB are just too high. Sure these particular units have tones but most CB stuff does not so unless these are your only radios you will not be using tones and you'll be hearing whatever crazy stuff the people with 9000 watt amps feel like spewing across the air.

And all the new radios are hexi decimal compiled and software driven or they have a internal service mode to change things. But there set from the factory. Cause on cb you need clean loud audio. And I was able to turn up the audio and modulation on my uniden. But Wright down the factory numbers incase you mess up. Btw I have heard of a mod for the wouxun 950 p moble to go on 27 mhz so you can use that radio to Crossband. But only one radio will excite the moble on cb and the other one on ham or vhf or uhf depending on how you set it up.

About a tie. FRS can talk back and forth with GMRS on simplex and hear GMRS repeaters down links if close. The thing I hate is FRS has preset CTSCC/DCS that needs to be canceled or changed if talking to outside the circle radios. CB you might be able to talk to truckers. Truckers with CBs on is getting very scarce.

As they sit stock for stock. Likely no. The antenna is too compromised. It needs a good telescopic and then hypothetically. You could get much further than FRS/GMRS.

Not enough power or SSB or able to switch coax for antenna. These represent lack of foresight by the builders of just another walkie talkie that is only good for 1/4-1/2 mile range unless on top of a hill or high spot in elevation. Might work ok if you were to climb on the roof.

Definitely like to see new stuff that's coming in to the CB band the 11 M BAND four doesn't require license to transmit excellent emphasis on radio communication become an asset it is becoming an asset now we see how volatile the grid is we see how volatile things are probably coming our way however enough with the negative things the small radios are great they're rechargeable batteries basically however there's one thing that does in that it may have an impact I've been using 217's TRC I've been using TRC 216 TRC 225 walkie talkies of course Citizen band you can get more range in a mile for sure I like to push the edge and go further for example I managed to make contact from SFU Mountain out of British Columbia SFU Mountain Vancouver British Columbia Burnaby to the gulf Islands it's about a 30 Mi communication it was clear line of sight well almost line aside however the point is just signal will probably get further if you're on height the issue that you're using you're using coil antennas and these are not giving you your full wave Ben this may explain why you're only getting a mile if you would have tried different antenna even the longer one you have it should be all right however what I would do instead and what I did because I was using a TRC 225 you can look it up it doesn't have the coil antenna it does have the cold antenna however you basically need to have you can use a different antenna on top of it to match the SWR to come as close as possible I use an old TRC 217 loading coil antenna basically I put the loading color antenna on top of the TRC 225 and my range got a lot longer this is what they've using back Radio Shack in the '90s these call Boost load antennas you see those at the end of those old walkie talkies from 1986 87 84 the old loading coils it looks like a bulb at the end close to the end of the antenna this is what I would use on top of your system not to say that it's not doing right of course your hand ready operator you know that line of sight will make a difference and of course ionospheric conditions will also make a difference however you mentioned that you would like to try installing a different antenna I definitely conclude and definitely concur on this one yes you should try it would love to see that I would love to basically get some more range out of those Citizen band radio a long time ago I did make on a mobile station a TRC it was a 23 Channel and I was from New Westminster to California New Westminster British Columbia to California I made a contact on three Watts that was am skip mind your solar activities behaving much more erratically now than it was before the point that I'm making yes you may want to try a dipole antenna vertical would probably work however horizontal maybe with a Transformer would help however I would be curious to see how it behaves and it's the way you could test to check the SWR on that system when you install a horizontal dipole I've tried my bypassing one of those trc217 with a RCA jack with an AV Jack trying to transmit on those however I know that as you know the wave has got to be equal so it's got to be roughly 5.5 m a piece or about 15 ft 1560 ft per link to be on the frequency and that's not exact exact however if you were to do the calculations you'd be close to 15 ft per link per side of your dipole I would be curious to see how it would work or even trying it on half or quarter wave be aware that these new antennas that are coming out that are fitting on top of those BNC that are designed for the 27 MHz I'm not I don't think these antennas are well calibrated as the older types from the trc217s you can get those on eBay may not be as well calibrated as what was created before maybe it has to do with production they're cutting cost that coil that's not properly aligned will make a big difference upon your transmission yes if that walkie-talkie you showed with the SSP it would be a great Improvement if they would be a modifying it increasing the power to 5 Watts that would also be a great Improvement probably there is a way of modifying it of resetting the machine within the BIOS itself there's probably a way of getting in there the same way you can actually unlock some some of the features and some of the radios thank you for your video I will be sharing it in a group as well as I strongly believe that knowledge of radio communication whether your hand operator whether your CB operator whether you just like radio this knowledge has to be shared amongst the public we will need this information as I mentioned before we're in for a lot of stuff coming our way maybe a very cold winter potentially also dysfunctional weather and other issues coming our way keeping in contact with people whether FRS gmrs or even Citizen band is the way to go you want to make sure that your family is safe your friends are safe then having a radio and knowing how it works and also getting the best efficiency and performance out of the transmitter well make a difference between someone maybe being alive having Assistance or not living because they did not know how to operate the equipment as well the operation of ham radio the Bands are learning how these bands are working 11 M BAND 10 M BAND 12 M BAND 14 MHz 7 MHz in case of an emergency knowing how these equipment work will definitely make a difference however I emphasize on non-licensed equipment right now for the general population understanding how radio concept work radio communication works thank you for the previous videos however I found this one interesting because I do operate CDs and I do test the range out of these I like to push the limits for example one of these cheap FRS radios that were bought on Canadian Tire Canadian Tire store in Canada and Uniden managed to make a 52 km distance however this wasn't optimal condition I had a person that went up a hill a mountain at 1.7 km who's a runner and I was at UBC University ground because it is higher in the city of Vancouver it is about 300 ft above the city so we managed to establish a contact you can do those contacts a lot better of course on CB but you need to have the right antenna the right setup these radios are a lot more sensitive to interference and they won't do skip FRS does not do skip it is very unlikely you may have the sporadic Eid I may enable this these are very rare conditions so you're constrained to line of sight and the curvature of the Earth citizen Ben enables you to do the skip as you know it is 27 MHz it is a low enough frequency it is under 30 MHz therefore you have a chance however 14 and 7 megahertz it's King for skip

Total guess here based on my day job as an analog design engineer for ADI: The reason you’re given four watts on FM but only two on AM is probably because the RF is likely coming from some kind of I,Q chip. Low level modulation. Every stage after has to be linear for AM but they can use class C for FM. Just a guess.
@nicklikesradio

And i think that transfers over to amateur radios as well. That and duty cycle? Not sure about that one though.
@nine7295
@nine7295 2 жыл бұрын
I think the 2W spec for the AM mode is the measurement for the carrier only, not including modulation. If you include the modulation then the total is more than 2 W. It has nothing to do with I/Q, which is the digital data representation of the wave form. Unrelated completely.

That heatsink on that radio looks like it barely would deal with the 4 watts. And those antennas suck and usually dont radiate much. They have issues being anywhere near anything capacitive (like your torso on a belt). Range both ways would be increased significantly with external antenna. (Obviously) The guys on 27.025 aka channel 6 are in Alabama area. They run like 6000 watts. They are my band opening monitoring channel. Although i have to turn volume to zero, otherwise my iq drops a point a second.
