Hi Very helpful video, Just ordered my IC-7300 with handle and a nifty manual on 1-25-2019, so I have a lot to learn. First new radio in many many years. Keep the videos coming as they are very informative and maybe I won't need to read the manual, lol. As for the comments on tuning on Receive. I have always tuned on receive if I wasn't getting a clear signal. Sometimes it helps. I have an external manual tuner ATR-30 a bit of over kill for just 100 watts but it is left over from my amplifier days and is just to good of a tuner to sell for $300. The video does a great job explaining the different signals on waterfall. Anyway when I get my new IC-7300 in a few days I will get it set up and come back and watch this video again and go through the steps with you. 73 Thanks again Robert

Man I’m trying real hard to stop myself from buying the 7300. They have it in stock and $100 rebate for total cost of $1000. Just not sure I want to do HF at all and if I want mobile HF or base station. Mobile HF seems like a pain in the butt but I have moved over 70 times in my life and a base station doesn’t seem like the best idea. Still not even sure I want to HF! Having good fun with the XTM-400XDR you talked me into, though!

Wow, this video is making my first HF radio selection difficult. I am not too interested in contests or digital modes at the moment. Current plan is to operate mostly portable outside of the house on a deck. At under $500 the Alinco DX SR8T seemed like a reasonable choice just to get on the air. However, your discussion on receive filtering is having me reconsidering the options. Now I have something else to prove to wifey that “I need”. Thanks, friend 😙

ic-7300 seems like such a nice hi-fi white noise generator just like an AM radio of years ago...my question is; do you or anyone actually use it for two-way/bi-directional communication?...i noticed you talking to yourself at 45:00. then at 46:46 you confirm that you only have one side of the conversation...its kinda funny...

At the 50 minute mark you blew past the RX EQ and LPF/HPF settings saying you dont use them.. Did you ever go back and choose? You can only use the EQ or the Filters not both at the same time. I chose the filters with 200-2000....What say you?

Hey sorry for the dumb questions all the time but I am new to ham radio. I am suppose to be getting the ICOM 7300. Referring to the 20:29 mark of this video, I do have concerns about all the research I have been reading about and what you are saying about the emergency tuner in terms of being by or next to the antenna during transmission. Does this pretty much mean the coax cable connected to the radio cannot be near anyone when transmitting? I will be running the coax into my house and if there are some potential dangers of the coax carrying a signal so strong that I cant be near it when transmitting then that would be a concern for me. Also, I have extremely limited space outside for an antenna so I will be using possibly an End Fed Antenna which is another concern that when I am transmitting, the end fed antenna will be outside and some children in the neighborhood may touch it while I am transmitting as part of the antenna may be lower than the other end of the antenna. Will that put them at risk if they did touch the antenna while I was transmitting? Again sorry for all the dumb questions. I am so completely new to this. Thanks

Dear Captain HRCC (Josh), all the way from Tennessee- THANK YOU! I have only one question, as I was already fixated on the IC-7300: is there a vendor that you’d recommend over the others, for this radio? Especially, is there one that supports this channel, and where the price and after-sale-support is (nearly) as good as others? Your answer will greatly influence the purchase I plan to make in the next weeks. Again, thank you for your excellent explanations and interesting subjects.

Know you said tuning does not help on RX but I can tell you that if I tune up with my external LDG, it will make a huge difference on RX.
@HamRadioCrashCourse6 жыл бұрын
Interesting, why do you think it improves the RX?
@RichardDePas6 жыл бұрын
@@HamRadioCrashCourse I've tuned up right on top of people I couldn't even hear. When done tuning, they were S1 or S2. I don't know if it is the fact I am using an external tuner and maybe it is so far out from tuning in another band on my 20m dipole.
@HamRadioCrashCourse6 жыл бұрын
So the general theory is that the tuner, in your case external is creating the impedance match for the antenna. Without it the antenna would not resonate with the feedline/radio. The general thought is that there might be a feed line mismatch, but the actual antenna, its receive characteristics remain unchanged by the tuning.

This is not an entry level radio. That would be a baofeng or a IC-718, FT-450, or a Xiegu G-90. This is an intermediate level radio that is technically superior to even many higher level radios in the past. Its quite discouraging to tell new comers to the hobby that they will need about $1500+ for a radio, power supply, antenna, etc, just for entry level.
