HAMSTER BAR CHEWING! Why they do it? How to stop it? 🤔

Today’s video is a very long one informing you on hamster bar chewing. Seeing as so many have come to me asking what to do, I just thought I'd make a whole video on the topic. Hope you enjoy and find it very helpful :) x

I love your advice, my little Leo been biting on his bars for as long as I've known him for, he's asleep right now but I still went ahead and change the lay out of his cage, hid some of his food in his betting and did the diy paper, paper roll, with the hamster food I hope he likes it if this doesn't stop him from crewing the bars I might have to consider putting him in one of those tanks

My hamster has an around 470 SQ inches of floorspace from a homemade cage, but she kept chewing her bars. I added an around 110 SQ attachment and she's fine now! Also, my hamster has a play pen, but it's kinda small and I wanna let her have stairs time, but I have dog... Thanks for this video, it helped a lot!

SennaStar you need to upgrade Because even after a year they still can get bored they will never have a big enough cage but you can keep upgrading just a little not every time but most of the time

Oh my good thank you so much I just watched this because my hamster munchkin wouldn’t stop bar chewing and my ex best friend that gave me her said it was normal for her to do that but I kept looking online to see if that was true. ITS NOT AT ALL I realized so I’ve just tried the scatter food around in the cage and she loves it and has stopped the bar chewing thank you so much ❤️

Thank you soooo much! I have been giving my hamster as much enrichment as I can and their cage is well over the minimum and she still chews on the bars!! All the other hamster youtubers say that it is stress and that the cage is too small. I was starting to panic and even thought about setting her free. Thank you for not going to the common solution of having to upgrade. Also I am starting to feel it is attention seeking as she only does it when she knows where I am/ am in my room. Could this be possible??

That's great to hear! Yes and in some cases it can be, if the cage is too small or lacking enrichment but there are many other reasons as to why they can they chew bars which are overlooked. If she only does it when you're in the room, it could be. She may want your attention and want to come out and play so if you do see her do this I would get her out and give her that extra time :)

Typically I spot clean daily and get new toys overtime along with changing the layout daily!On his waking hours he mostly spends his time on a wheel though!

I got my first hamster a few days ago. Shes only 7 days old and very hyperactive. Today she started climbing up her cage. She falls and hits her back sometimes and she gets her arm stuck. Peachy, this video was done immaculately! Each point is so important; I would reccomend this to anyone new to hamsters as not only does it cover bar chewing, but it also discusses the overlooked needs of hamsters, like play time. People should know beforehand that hamsters need time outside of the cage, because they may not have the play space or time for this. By the way, Plum on the bed was so cute: "What do I do?" 😂

The only thing is, my hamster Is extremely scared of everything. She is super fast, and I've tried for 7 months to try and tame her. Playtime, or time out of her cage isn't a thing. The only way I can take her out, is if she climbs in a tube, and then I detatch the tube, holding the bottom shut. I'm so glad she doesn't bite. XX

Hi I have a bin cage that equals up to about 800 square inches of floor space and my hamster nibbles bites the top of the bin cage where I have the mesh on top or chicken wire she bites the plastic and bites the zip ties do you have any suggestions to stop this she has a decent amount of chew toys I've made her some DIY ones on my channel please help

I have a Russian dwarf hamster called Missi and she chews the bars to grab my attention. When I enter the room and ignore her she will but the bars until i get close and then she'll stop and wait for me to help her down and play. It worries me because my hamster home is mostly plastic with some bars on the opening at the top so she jumps onto her wheel and then onto them. I know she's happy with her house because even if I remove the top half of her enclosure she wont attempt to escape. I think I'm gonna try the food scattering because she loves to eat her food from my hand so I imagine that she'll love to look for her food from around her home. Thanks for the help

I saved up for months to buy my hamster chilli a £70 massive cage ,she’s had the cage for a few weeks and she really just wants to get out I’ve tried everything, chew stopper , more active play , chews , etc . Jellybean The Hamster Your hamster climbing your cage is normal, remember hamsters are very adventurous! The only issue is when they start falling off and hurting their back. I recommend putting more bedding in if he is falling high up but other than that it shouldn’t be a huge issue.:))

My hamster is in a HUUUGE tank, but chews the mesh top.. please help I have tried everything in this Video... she has a second layer, over her bedding layer, and on that layer she likes to sleep and she doesn’t even bother staying down for long.. when she is up she chews the mesh bars while standing on her house :( she has a house in her bedding layer but guess what.. she doesn’t bother, today I found her injured from the chewing... Not their teeth but it can be bad for their noses and also if they intake too much paint from the bars, it can cause harm to their systems. :)

How do you tell when you are ready to get another hamster afte one you had passed away?

You will know when you are ready, when you look at the cage and miss seeing life or so happen to fall in love with another hamster and this is perfectly okay, you should not feel bad for wanting another. I know how hard it is when they go and that empty feeling that's left. I actually find having another hamster can help you cope better because they are they are there to comfort you and they can help mend what has been damaged. I know this from experience, I have always found having another hamster by my side can help make the grieving less painful. :)

Hey! I'm a hamster owner, and I've never had a hamster die, (only one of them ran away, okay? =3=) for any bad reasons. Only of age. Hi! First off, with the height of the cage, I'd suggest putting some little hammocks or those sputnik houses you get in just to break their fall a little bit so they don't hurt themselves falling too far. Secondly, I'd recommend showing your parents some videos and articles about why they need a cage of minimum size but if they still won't let you, consider bringing your hamster out for much more free roam play time with you during the day. This won't stop them bar chewing if it is down to the size but it may make them less stressed and give them new areas to explore.

She probably saw you as a threat seeing as you tried to pet her. She doesn't yet trust you so she may have thought you were going to ham her. They can go into defence mode and use their teeth which is their only weapon so that's understandable. Next time you try and engage with her, let her come to you and keep your hand still. That way, she has the choice of whether she wants to go to you not the other way round, so less of a threat :)

But seeing as it's two days and no more, I would fill her food bowl and bottle to the top and she should be okay. Change her cage layout so it's a bit more interesting for her and give her a lot more playtime when you get back

Hello! For my birthday, I will be getting a hamster for my birthday. Yes, it's my first time getting a hamster and I've been doing research before I get it. We did order a cage online from Amazon, however we had to cancel it due to it being too small. However, I'm planning to get the Hamster Heaven Cage, which is big enough for hamsters. However, I'm getting a Russian Dwarf Hamster or a Syrian Hamster. It says that it's suitable for Syrians and doesn't say anything about Dwarfs and some people have said that Dwarfs have trouble getting up the slide. If you have this cage, would you recommend it for a dwarf? (I might get a Syrian anyway) Edit: It would be much appreciated if you would help. (:

some more enrichment tips are putting in more dig spots, foraging, and new textures. repurpose a glass/mason jar and add some coco fiber, aspen shavings or other hamster-safe substrate, giving your hamster a new feel and smell to dig around in. add some foraging spray in like millet, oat, or flax. as for the new textures, i've just added some moss into my hamster's cage and he's been incorporating it into his bedding ! also use lots of wood, like grapevine wood, cork logs, and birch logs to fill up the cage and make it much more natural and exciting. avoid plastic except for a wheel!

When I take mine out of the cage it gets hyper then when I put him back in he wants to come out so he starts chewing bars. He calms after a while

I upgraded my hamster Olive into the same cage you have for your mice. I really want to get the livingworld cage but I currently don't have room for it. Olive really doesn't like to be interacted with and is very jumpy. She started chewing the bars on the front in June and it could get so loud that I'm having to put her in the old cage overnight which is 300 square inches smaller but she can't chew so I can sleep. I feel really bad for it because I can't take her out for fear of losing her. She has chewed some of the bars enough so that the paint is really rough and you could scrape the top of your finger on it. Changing the cage layout doesn't make a difference to her. Do you know how I could interact with such a skittish hamster? Thanks :)

Although she is chewing the bars, I wouldn't house her in an even smaller cage. That could make the situation worse and cause her to chew more whilst also stressing her out. I would try using the methods I mentioned in this video with your main cage and coat the bars with olive or vegetable oil, see if her chewing improves. I hope you are able to get the living world cage soon, I'm sure she'll love that! She does have a wheel but I don't think she has too much interest in the toys. I will try the oil and see if that helps // I personally don't know about getting hammocks because even though she isn't a huge chewer, the cage is 50cm tall so that's probably not the best idea. I will try to make it more interesting for her... she is 1 year and 2 months old and so energetic compared to Wispa! Also, I'm not permanently keeping her in the smaller cage, it's just overnight. I don't like doing it I know it's bad but it is just one of the options I have since I have cats and no where else to put her. Thanks for your help too Peachy!

I have a Chinese hamster, (she's a female) and for some reason she bites everything.. she nibbles on the bars nibbles on her bowl,her wheel. And her old home was an aquarium. It wasn't big but it worked until we got her the cage, I've asked my mom if we can try getting her something bigger but she doesn't listen to me :(

My hamster sometimes bar chews when I've just cleaned his cage or is getting bored of his toys. But he's fine after a few minutes or changed his toys

I'm so glad you enjoyed and found this helpful, that is very reassuring to hear! :3 Also yes it can be really hard to upload nowadays but I think what's important is to do what you're most comfortable with and try not to rush yourself because that can be stressful :) I also think when you're a KZbinr who isn't using this as a career like myself and quite a few others, there's no need to rush because it's not supposed to be a chore but more of a hobby. Anyway, I understand how hard it is to keep uploading at a regular pace, it's not easy and for me is a struggle and has been for a while now. But I appreciate anyone who still supports me when I can upload even though I don't feel things are very exciting on my channel. I might make a video on it myself but thank you for your support, you don't know how much that means to me

What if my hamster is pretty old and he is most likely going to die soon but I don’t have a very big cage and he won’t chew on toys or anything. The cage currently is one that he can’t escape out of because he is really good at that but I don’t know what to do because he keeps chewing on his bars.

maybe switch it to a bin cage where it can't access wires? if they do it for long enough it becomes compulsive and a habit. a cage upgrade still may be necessary, especially if you have a female hamster, which are much more active and are hard to please.

@@norapulver thats great! if you need to add more, you can add a glass jar full of a hamster safe substrate (like coco fiber, aspen, or safe wood chips) for a new texture and smell for your ham to dig around in. foraging sprays are also great.

I have been to maybe 10 different pet shops, not one offers a 3,000 sq cm cage. I bought the absolute biggest I could find and it is only 1,350 sq cm. It does have 3 levels but I believe this doesn't count. The cage that I did buy was also pretty darn expensive. I do try and take the hamster out as much as possible and play with him, not sure if that counts. I love the hamster, but honestly, bigger cages do NOT exist, certainly not in South Africa.
