There is something exquisitely expressive about the cello as a stringed instrument. The mellow tone exemplified is perfectly demonstrated by Han Na-Chang. Hearing something like this and played as emotionally would have been a highlight of my recent Prague visit. Alas, although there were several chamber ensembles to enjoy on that trip, there was no cello as empathetically played as in this piece 'Variations on a Theme by Rossini'.

Maravilla!!! Imagino trineos y cascabeles.

One of the hardest things i've experienced in my playing is showing confidence when playing a solo piece in front of a crowd, you Kind of have to trick yourself into thinking you're flawless and that you won't mess up, and absorb yourself into the piece so that you're no longer aware of the crowd watching you, you're only aware of the sound of the piece and how you want to play it. Also, the thing she does in the piece is called an Artificial Harmonic.

What is an artificial harmonic?

@@raphel5576it’s when u place a finger on the note u want to make an artificial harmonic with, and then gently touch the string with a second finger using a perfect fourth interval between the two

@DonTruman Yes, it's a harmonic. You press down the string with your thumb (most practical), and lightly touch another finger, usually the ring finger on a harmonic above the thumbnote. The most practical harmonic is a major third above (physically below) your thumbnote, it's close and rings kinda well (though not very well). You will hear the note your ring finger is on, but two octaves higher than when it's pressed down.
@nutritionalresearch16 жыл бұрын
yes, this is. This piece is technically titled, "Variations on One String," and as you can see the A string. Han Na Chang is just brilliant.

@RwithFlem I'm going to take a guess at it, based on some Googling: It's similar to the squeaks heard from beginners (not good) but in this instance it's controlled by a pro. As seen in the video, her fingers are at two points on the string. That fits with what I read: if another finger is barely touching a string being played, it "squeaks." I'll guess that the higher finger is fully pressing down on the string, and the lower finger is barely touching it, an octave lower.

@Bigbug123456 What a silly superficial comment! Navarra was a great cellist, but Han Na CHang is also a very fine and very musical cellist with splendid technique. There are plenty of fast virtuosic passages which she plays brilliantly!

@justincase229316 жыл бұрын
correct... theres specific positions on the fingerboard that you put one finger.. then with the other finger you play 2 octaves higher. those are difficult. the ones shes doing are just lightly pressing the string in various places to produce a flute-like sound an octave higher than what the normal note is. its pretty simple actually. once you learn the positions. Vibrato is much more difficult, though, in the harmonic positions

If Hannah Chang continued with her cello career, she would have become a legend in the classical world. I don't know why she couldn't at least pursue both cello and conducting. Would have been nice if she had more "responsibility" for the talent that was given to her.
@bobkopen646816 жыл бұрын
Next to the playing - the dress is not in the least provocative! Especially the harmonics (eg. 1:40 - 2:05 and 7:00 - 7:25) - now that is what I call provocative - Han-na sends me. I guess I have to admit that the dress is provocative at 7:25 but in that case, I think it fits the performance - WOW!

I went and listened to Navarra's interpretation and, while faster, I didn't find it "more natural." Chang's interpretation is more musical and moving to me. Navarra's version seemed to almost focus on speed and was scratchy compared to Chang's - maybe due to when it was recorded. It is a delightful piece of cello music in any case.

so.. the original music was composed by Paganini, but Rossini added variations to it? I am confused.
@sarahkim78008 жыл бұрын
+sarah kim And can another composer just add on to someone else's?
@louisrizzo41028 жыл бұрын
+sarah kim the practice is quite common. It's usually in homage to the original composer. Since there were no copyright laws at that time, there's nothing preventing other composers from making variations on that theme. Many composers "original" melodies come from ancient and folk tunes, anyways. A lot of compositional borrowing goes on.
@stilltuning7 жыл бұрын
The original theme was from Rossini's "Moses in Egypt." Paganini later took that theme and extrapolated it into several different themes that he compiled into this piece.

To you cellists out there, help me understand how she plays those really high notes at 5:50 and 6:09. I can see her playing the high string a lot, and the tone is nowhere near that high. But somehow it's possible to make that same string a super-high tone? How?
