Hana-Bi - That's the movie I will always say, when people ask me about my favorite movie. But most people don't know that movie, let alone a Kitano movie. I haven't studied film and I'm not deep into movies, but that one spoke to me, when I first watched it. That being said, the first time experience was the greatest of course. Saw no trailer, read no summary, didn't knew what this was about and what will happen. And the music of Joe Hisaishi, which music I love, adds to the atmosphere and story, this movie has. Kitano sure loves to play the dramatic hero/main character with just a minimum use of words. Well, in some way, it has a cool touch.

Thanks for sharing your experience! I understand you well, something similar happened to me with Sonatine. Never saw the trailer, never read the plot, and I didn't know Kitano. What an experience!

I still remember when I saw Hana-Bi for the first time in the cinema. That ending. So simple, so devastating. Every shot is burned into my mind. I remember walking out of the cinema into the night, shaken. My chest was so tight it was hard for me to breathe.

I remember how it hurt watching this movie, but it was a movie that changed my world. Even now I find difficult rewatching just the explanation. Kitano is a great director and also a good actor, he is very talented and I hope we see him more.

Great video! Akira Kurosawa also said that he likes Kitano films because there are no redundant explanations. Kitano called it the "factorization theory" in his book. Since Takeshi's roots are in the engineering department, his editing has scientific precision. In addition, he has a keen sense of perception that allows him to change scripts on the spot during filming.

Thank you very much! I really appreciate your comment. Indeed, what made me fall in love with Kitano's cinema are precisely those bursts of emotion that arise from simple, brutal and unexpected cuts. But also the playful scenes that arise from everyday moments.

I absolutely love the video, Kitano is also my favorite director and i love his music. I dont know if you will, but if you ever make a video about the rest of his career like his singing, art, and dancing it would be amazing. Its hard to really follow everything he did because his work wasnt well known in the west. I appreciate your video and channel!

I watched this movie a few years ago and always meant to rewatch it… The junkyard scene with the girl, has always stuck in my head. …there’s also an Italian movie called "Troubling Love"(L'amore molesto, 1995) that I saw during the same time period, and that movie was sooooo good that I had to stop watching films for a year or two, just to let my brain readjust back to normal expectations.

Hey, thanks a lot! The script is an excerpt from my graduation thesis entitled "Beat Takeshi Kitano - Anatomy of a Shadow". In particular, the video takes from a chapter dedicated to the author's editing. Unfortunately my thesis is written in Italian, but if you are interested I can send it to you :)

Ti ringrazio! In effetti hai ragione.

in love most of his movies, somehow this one tickles me the most! The weight of this movie can't be described. Get's me very hard! Also, the bank robery is the best in cinematic history! Joe Hisaishi's music underlines tikano's mix of violence and beauty in one of his best compositions as well. Very sensitive master class of composing. And yes, >Kitano's Heart!< I agree.
