love your work. Thanks so much for sharing how you do it. It would be a dream if I could do this!!

@@RoyKerckhoffsArt Hi Roy...not yet. I'm experimenting with cheap inkjet paper, Marshall oils and the PM solution to apply on the cheap paper, and it's working. Not well, because it's not finishing as I planned by imagination, but the result is still attractive. If it doesn't work out, then I will try the Golden acrylic glazing. Have you used this process more than once? If so, what is your experience since this video?

Yes I have a couple of times, including on canvas (kzbin.info/www/bejne/hoa6e2aApsuCg6M), but I still prefer the oils on chemically developed resin-coated matte paper. I know what you mean as my results have also varied. The coating has to be applied as even and flat (that is with little texture as possible). Sometimes it looks a bit messy: before I felt that everything had to be as perfect as possible (i.e. uniformly without brush strokes) but I got over that and I'm okay with more rough looking results. One time though I messed it up badly: I was trying to remove some of the paint on top of the coating but then I also rubbed the coating away and had to start over.

@@RoyKerckhoffsArt Hi Roy...I imagine it's a tradeoff. The ease of use and familiar look of chemically developed matte paper (possibly the fiber based papers) vs the convenience of the acrylic glaze. The convenience is hard to resist; especially since this is for my own amusement.

Thanks for a great tutorial....I have one question: in this video you do not prep the print with spray-on varnish, but in the Netherlands bicycle video you spray with Golden Spray On varnish first, then you applied the gloss with a roller. Can I prepare the print with the Golden Gloss that you applied with a roller? It looks like spray varnish is not required....am I correct? Thank You!

Good point! I believe this was one of the first times I was experimenting with coloring on inkjet papers and did not yet spray it. It was after this piece I started noticing some running of inks and started doing the spraying first. Sometimes the running of the inks are very minimal or even absent. I'd give it a shot on a smaller scale and try it with and without spraying. It is also true that rolling on the medium is a tad safer than brushing it on without spraying it first. Hope this helps. If you have some new experiences let me know. Thanks!

Wonderful as always Roy! Love the subtle color of the sky with this image - I think it gives the tower more of an impact. How do the Marshall Photo Oils spread on this sort of application as compare to a traditional resin coated photo? Hope you are healthy and well!

Thanks Dan. It works pretty much the same. The only potential difficulty is when you rub a Q-tip too hard (to remove paint): you could remove the underlying coating too. It has happened to me but I may have not waited too long and it was probably not 100% dry yet. I'm working now on a video where I apply it to canvas.

Thank you for this video! I hand colored with marshal oils 'back in the day' of IR film and a home darkroom. Got away from it when digital took over and I'm now getting back into it with a converted IR DSLR. I had a few Ilford Matte fiber prints made a year or so ago at DSI but seems now they are only printing gloss. So .. I'm looking for a good solution 'hack' like what you have here! And those fiber prints were expensive so this also seems like a good value solution. .....My question ... is there a reason you use the 'gloss' finish on the Golden verses the 'matte'? Thanks again ... love your work!
@RoyKerckhoffsArt3 жыл бұрын
Hi Donna. Awesome that you're getting back to it! I was asking that question myself the other day: the actual reason is that I was already using gloss glazing liquid to make glazes when I color on canvas with acrylics - and to slow down the drying time a bit too for opaque acrylics. And in doing those I like the somewhat more gloss look. So it was readily available to put on my inkjet prints. Now that you mentioned it I may give matte also a try, or if you do, let me know! Since this video I have used it more times. One thing I learned that it's important to wait long enough for it to dry, 2 to 3 days. Sometimes it may still be slightly wet underneath parts where it looks dry and when going over it with paint, the coating ripped off. I also brush the medium on (see here for example: kzbin.info/www/bejne/opq0iopsnrGLqJo) and since it's virtually impossible to prevent brush strokes I sometimes brush on in directions of the structure of the subject underneath, Thank you!

Is there a replacement for Marshall oil
@RoyKerckhoffsArt3 жыл бұрын
Yes: when I color on canvas I mix liquin with oils. However, the consistency is not really that of Marshall's (the liquin mix is less paste like). So instead an impasto liquin and oil mix may be better but haven't tried that yet. I was going to do another video on inkjet paper like this but I'm going to test out the impasto/oil mix and do that on inkjet paper with acrylic medium.
@RoyKerckhoffsArt3 жыл бұрын
I just uploaded one in which I colored a b&w photo on inkjet paper with regular oils that are diluted with impasto liquin. It worked really well! kzbin.info/www/bejne/ipi6hIWcq6qMaZY

Love all your work and videos, but that background music is distracting. It's not needed. Or maybe something just softer with less volume. I'd rather concentrate on your instructions.

@@RoyKerckhoffsArt Maybe something a little softer. The music on this particular one is distracting. Sounded like it was on the same level as your voice and it was competing for my attention. Who know, maybe my brain is wired wrong. Anyway I love your channel and you do fantastic work.
