💙 Who are we?
We are Ben and MP!
Recently we decided to purchase a two-masted wooden schooner in Brazil. The fun detail about our story is that the boat we bought was sinking and relying on many bilge pumps to survive so we had to lift it onto the dry to start a full refit. Once the boat was lifted (for the first time in her life) we realized that the works needed were a lot more than expected. Between bailing or accepting the challenge, we decided to go for the second option. Watch us as we bring Yabá back to life with the help of an amazing team of traditional shipwrights, sharing every phase of the process, overcoming the highs and lows and having fun along the way.

💙 Massive thanks to our amazing team of carpenters that never let us down and continue to amaze us at every step of the process: Toninho, Zeca, Hélio, Claiton, William, Nezo, Nico, Beto and Luiz. YOU ARE LEGENDS!

Hi Guys, I have been watching your video’s with fascination and just Love them. I look forward to Sunday evenings to catch your next episode. I sometimes wish I was 50 years younger and gone on an adventure like yours. I have been a fan of yours almost since the start, shouting at my TV screen watching you make that massive/dangerous crossing to get to your Shipwright’s and the start of your Re-build. I look forward to my Sunday evenings to catch-up with your next exciting episode. I was sitting here with tears rolling down my face as your poor boat was being ripped apart and BIG HAPPY smiles as it was being rebuilt. It is Sunday morning and so am looking forward to watching your next episode later today. I am a 73 year old (Sentimental) man who spends most of my days watching KZbin on TV especially your rebuild. You Look After yourselves and take Good Care … oh yeah…. Stay SAFE Always. I’m still watching so keep them coming 😊🤗😆🤩👌🏿👌🏿👌🏿

I’ve read many of the comments about leaking windows and don’t you think that these people in Brazil have a solution we have not thought possible. These shipwrights have been building boats in a tropical area for what appears decades. So let’s wait and see what the solution. Amazing videography MP. Beautiful work. I also am concerned with the high possibility of leakage. Sideways winds Squall, hurricane force winds, bow spray. Even just condensation can be an issue I would think. I hope not, but definitely consider it when building the windows.
@mp6756
@mp6756 2 жыл бұрын
I have said it before and I will say it again the skilled workers allowing Yaba live a new life are amazing. Yaba is certainly not a boat built of modern materials like fiberglass and carbon rather a locally traditional build using methods of a traditional design. That is what I think makes it so unique. Simple things like drilling holes in the window frames are done by eye and from what I could tell are spaced equally within a few millimeters of one another impressive stuff. Stay safe
@icelandviking1961
@icelandviking1961 2 жыл бұрын
@@mp6756 I’m with Raymond on this the windows will leak. Will it sink it? No. Would it look stupid with round portholes? Yes. So decisions are made based on usage and style. I do hope the don’t use plain glass or cheap plexiglass. Also I don’t think they are going world cruising. I remember something about a dive boat.
@mp6756
@mp6756 2 жыл бұрын
@@icelandviking1961 Agreed they will leak no doubt about that. I'm fairly confident they are going to rome the coastal waters of Brazil. I hope they don't try crossing the Atlantic with Yaba it's definitely not the right design and with only internal ballast she won't be comfortable on the open ocean. When I say comfortable I mean safe. Brazilian schooners are very popular as charter business hosting tourist and for the two of them on their channel they have a lot of beautiful country to explore and share. Yaba is big enough I'm sure they could sail to the north up the coast without much difficulty. It's a great channel watching the boat take shape with what I would say different than usual construction methods.

@@mp6756 Mike, I worked in a boatyard in the 70’s in California. Some of what they do was use on wooden fishing boat then. It was cheaper but not unsafe. The marine growth will be harder than anything else. Remember a boat starts sinking the day you put it in the water.

Hey , you guys... You might want to make a hope chest in your apt. Build at least 2 extra wood window frames, and save them for repairs. In 10 years wood of that ki d may not be easy to get or will surely cost a hell of alot more., I would vacuum seal the wood parts in a food saver bag, So 10 or 20 years it's still dry and good. Any, key part, you can make a extra one, do it now and save it at your house. Even the spindles, made out of wood break .

Mooi werk!
