Watch as we make hand-dipped beeswax candles. Candle dipping is an old-fashioned skill that is so fun to learn and very rewarding. Beeswax taper candles are beautiful and have a slightly sweet smell. A full tutorial including cut list for our candle dipping setup is included:

Hi. I tried my own candles today. Its been fun! But I feel like someone, somewhere, out of the 20 diffrent hand dipped candle making videos i watched, should have noted that if your wax is TOO HOT then it won't stick to the wick, or the previous dip. I sat here for an hour dipping these candles and nothing happened. They weren't getting any thicker. I then realized my wax was too hot and it was just melting the previous wax dip I did 🙃😂

Oh goodness, that's too bad! I did say it should be around 155 degrees. Too cold will be lumpy, I didn't experience too hot so wasn't aware that I should warn of it! Now others will know! Thanks for sharing!

I melt my bees wax at 145 Fahrenheit for poured candles. It takes longer but it is much better to do so. Yet, for hand dipping I think she is correct to do so at 155 F. That temp is a nice temp to melt bees wax at, it will speed the melting process but not get the wax too hot. Also you may let your candles cool 5 to 10 minutes between dippings. Good and happy candle making to you. 🙂

Thank you so much for showing me your efficient set up. I happened upon a horde of beeswax and I'm good to build a frame a give it a whirl. I also like these family videos; it makes me feel hopeful.

Such a nice family project. I did this many years ago in my early jr high school days. I never progressed past two at a time, using tennis ball cans. I have recently started candle making again as a retirement prepping hobbiest level of container and molded candles. I have been looking for the right size dipping container but everything is plastic these days. You have given me a push to start looking more intently again. Thanks

Well done video. The little girls are so cute. Suggestion, add hot water to your wax as the level gets low. The water will sink to the bottom and raise the wax level back up to the proper place.

While the water bath setup you have is safer than heating the wax directly on a burner, it is NOT a double boiler. For that, you need the wax container suspended in the water and not touching the bottom of the water pot. While the wax will not get hot enough to be a fire hazard, it could get hot enough to discolor (darken) the wax and possibly even burn it a bit. Make the rack with more space between the rack bars and the wick supporting bars longer. It makes the setup more tolerant of slips in coordination. There will be quite a bit of wax on the bottom with no wick in it. You can cut that wax off when the candle is close to being finished and remelt it. The last two or three dips will smooth up and finish the bottom nice.

I love this! What a great mom you are exposing your girls to this kind of craft and skill! I'm doing this with a small tutoring class that I have. We read a book similar to "Little House on the Prairie" and are trying out making our own candles, dyes from nature to paint, etc. Much appreciation! Two questions, please: do you have the measurements for the wooden candle rack (I have to make one) and how did you cut the top of the can off - what type of metal cutter - and how did you smooth the edges? Thank you!

Sorry for the delay in response! I will get back to you on the measurements of the rack, they are actually here on the post, theeverydayfarmhouse.com/candle-dipping-hand-dipped-beeswax-taper/. For the can my husband cut it off with a dremel tool and then just used a hammer to flatten out any rough or sharp spots. I hope that helps! I hope you have loads of fun making these!

I am a beekeeper. Contact a local beekeepers club and talk to some of the beekeepers to get wax. You will get better guilty wax. I sell bees wax to many candle makers and those that do a lot of wood working.

Are these true taper candles (3/4" diameter)? Have you ever made chime candles (1/2" diameter)? What wick size would you use for a smaller candle?
@theeverydayfarmhouse8722
@theeverydayfarmhouse8722 Жыл бұрын
Yes these are true taper size. You would want a smaller wick for a thinner candle, however as I have never made them I can't tell you for sure the exact size. This was 24 ply wicking. I would say somewhere between 15-21 ply would be best. I hope that helps!

I made hand dipped candles last spring after watching yours and a couple other videos. I only now burned the first one and I don't think I picked a good size wick. Do your burn clean? Can you clarify what you use for wicking? My wicks burn dropping black wick crumbs quite a bit. Thanks

I looked at my blog post and checked my Amazon orders. I have 24 ply wicking written in the post. The Amazon order shows 27 ply, I honestly don't know if they have changed it since I bought it or if I made a mistake! I don't think that small of a number would make a difference. Here is the link to what Amazon says I ordered! I'm sorry yours are doing that, mine do not and we have burned quite a few. wicking link: amzn.to/3Rod1RA

I guess I just don't mind a small amount of bees wax on my pot or counter. It isn't going to hurt me. I use a double boiler set up but now looking into hand dipped candles. Funny thing, I did keep a large olive oil can in a cabinet for 2+ years after I used all the oil. I was thinking "I should hang on to this, I might find a use for it." That never developed. I had started thinking "well I guess I don't have a use for it after all and I don't wish to be a pack rat." Out the door it went. Now, 2 years after that, I now find I wished I had hung on to it. 😂
