Goldenrod is easy to find this time of the year in Upstate SC. It is an easy Hand Drill Spindle to work with. Like the Horseweed, it has leaf nubs that comfortably bite into the skin of the hand and give you a sure grip. Seems like it took forever to dry out in the back glass of the car, 10 days. I was kind of waiting for all the leaves to turn brown, but they didn't. As it turns out, Goldenrod leaves retain their green color even when they get crispy dry... Good!!! Let's go ahead and try the leaves for Rudiger Roll and the stalk for Hand Drill Friction Fire... Please SUBSCRIBE at the end of the video. Thanks! I am sure glad you made this video, I was at my deer lease looking for horse swede the other day and every time I thought I found some it was just stupid golden rod! That stuff was everywhere I looked. It just seemed to flimsy and hollow core to use as a hand drill so I just left it. Now with your video and new found encouragement from you I will try to see if any is left before it’s all gone as days are getting cooler. Thank you!

Our most abundant stalky plants for hand drill are Dogfennel, then Goldenrod, and next, my favorite, Horseweed.

Hey David, first I hope you and your family - and possessions - are fine, safe and secure following hurricane Florence. I love your videos. Very professional. I was wondering if you had thought of actually showing some of the spindles you use in your hand drills BEFORE you harvest and dry them out. It would help some of us noobs identify them in the wild. :-) Thanks a million and keep up the good work.

I usually find something along the roadside, pull off on the side of the road, make a quick harvest, throw it in the back of the car, and take off before I draw too much attention. I have a couple of Horseweed videos that are from harvest to fire.
