This took a lot longer than I thought! It was well worth it though. A one of a kind 18th century bodice that is custom to my desire.

I'm so glad you included that comment about "this is taking so long." I've done some embroidery projects and in general they take me about 6 months! Your improvised embroidery designs are so lovely. I need to find another clothing item to embroider now!

Haha nothing like a little self-castigation... I love embroidery. It takes time but it's kind of soothing and it's such a beautiful element to a garment. Your bodice looks so pretty. One thing I have done that I thought of because of the weave of the red linen: if you use a single color of floss, you can buy another skein a shade or two lighter and substitute a couple of the strands of the main color for the lighter threads when you thread your needle. It doesn't really dramatically change the overall look but it adds nice texture and a little variegation and depth to the embroidery.

This was STUNNING! I love your hand-drawn embroidery. Very tempted to make one of these for myself… :) The first stitch you showed is called a backstitch!

Thank you! Oh yes, I remember that name now 🙂 Yes you should!! It’s easy as you don’t need expensive fabric to make it… plus, embroidered floss is really cheap!

it's beautiful, but I wonder why you didn't embroider the top before assembling the lining, it would have been easier I think?
@thetailorette
@thetailorette Жыл бұрын
Your thinking is right! But I wanted the experience of putting the design on the bodice with it finished. Plus, I had a lot of seams I was going over and working around and I didn’t want the hassle. More just a personal preference 🙂

Thank you! That is my goal. To show the the more difficult things in sewing are definitely doable for newbies! Here is the pattern I use for this dress: www.etsy.com/listing/702755702/period-impressions-1770s-polonaise-with I don't always add the ribbon to turn it into a polonaise dress, but I just leave the skirt attached to the bodice as an extra skirt piece.

Good attempt. The embroidery really should have been done before the lining went in. You don't want to see the stitching coming through. But it looks pretty good. 🙂
@thetailorette

I know that’s the standard but I liked the idea of drawing in the garment as it was finished. More a personal preference for this particular project 🙂

I made some 18th century stays last summer, and I read somewhere that they would use linings that were loosely sewn in, so they could be taken out and washed separately when sweaty. I could be wrong, but that’s what I did: I did some basic flossing, and then put in the lining with fairly large but barely visible stitches. Also, how do you close this at the front? Did you pin it closed or are there hooks and eyes?
@thetailorette
@thetailorette Жыл бұрын
Yes! I’ve heard that as well. My theory is there was a little bit of both they did. I’ve seen both ways. I tend to break rules to create a certain look so I’m Not entirely going based on historical records. I used hooks and eyes for the front closure. I’ve found it to look cleaner than pins.
