Hand valve lapping

Prepping the valves on my 062 Vortec small block Chevy heads.

Hey love the video and info on the Vortec heads.. I personally think that the seats are a little wide especially on the exhaust side.. I worked in a Machine Shop for 20 plus years we ported all kinds of heads over the years especially the Vortec head and the bigger Bowtie Version of the Vortec head.. We had a flow bench and engine dyno we bored decked blocks etc.. if the customer wanted something specific to dirt racing and we built a lot of them.. drag racing that’s my thing but if you cut that guide boss down to it looks like a tear drop it will help and just clean the entire bowl area up that to would help. A good valve job would do wonders lol... we were getting around 240 cfm @ .400 lift and 280s @ .500 lift at 550 lift which is as far as they would flow we were getting 290s.. on the intake side.. the exhaust would flow about 210 @ .500 this was with 2.055 and 1.6 valves.. we did try smaller 2.02 valves and larger 2.08 valves but the sweet spot for the GM Vortec head 906/062 was the 2.055 valves.. now we also had us a test mule on the dyno 10.51 compression 406 which made about 425 HP @ 4800 and 520 ft lbs of torque @ 3800/4000 rpm... that’s with a good factory set of 906/062 with 1.941.50 valves now with them ported the same setup made 485 HP @ 5600 and the same torque 520 but at a higher 4600/4800 rpm.. it really surprised us all the engine did have a Street Solid Roller cam It was a Isky grind.. Air gap style intake Edelbrock.. Roller Rockers etc.. but anyway keep up the good work and keep the videos coming.. I enjoyed watching them.. I sure miss working in the shop everyday it was a awesome job.. and we built everything from Mopar’s to Pontiac’s just whatever the customer wanted..

New replacement vortec valves are kinda cheap, my high mileage heads the valves were worse than the heads. The width of the valve seat effects flow some but they should still be better than the heads on your 70's engine. Cool trick with the extension, I've seen people chuck up small hose n put it over the stem. I've found auto parts store lapping compound to be to rough/course, got some finer stuff I'm gonna try for my vid. Well the lapping compound breaks down finer but I don't wanna start that course with new valves.
