Because it was not invented by British. Another thing is that the first types of handball, was outdoor on large fields with 11 vs 11 players, very non-practical. Thankfully the 1972 introduction to Olympics helped this sport to gain some popularity. Initially it was not played in France and Spain, but they came from behind, and by 1990s these two nations were some of the best in the world. Italy, probably being to successful in football (in 1970s and 1980s), would not get addicted with handball like France and Spain.

@fabiosalsi3776 1917?????? Coming from Denmark I have to differ!! It was known as early as 1897 in Denmark. With rules developed by the likes of R.N. Ernst ( from Nyborg, in my local area! ) and Holger Nielsen. The first known "official" match was in 1903 inside a known cycle arena ( Ordrup). More specific rules for handball was written down in 1906.
