Ludwig van Beethoven, when asked to name the greatest composer ever, is said to have responded, "Handel, to him I bow the knee." At the end of his life, he also said, while referring to an edition of Handel's works, "There is the truth." Handel's music is so much more than "The Messiah." Thanks for posting this fine recording of his organ concertos, some of my personal favorite works. I'm sure these works will be new to a lot of listeners. Welcome to the club-- you *can* Handel the truth!

"Handel is only fourth rate. He is not even interesting." Tchaikovsky on Handel "A tub of pork and beer." Berlioz on Handel "It's beautiful and boring. Too many pieces finish too long after the end." Stravinsky on Handel's Theodora
@mateuszandrzejewski36164 жыл бұрын
@@mrnarason You have mentioned composers from the past, which probably didn't know Handel's music enough to judge it. Even, if they were acquainted with some his compositions, they knew it from bad, heavy performances in the style of the 19th century. Beethoven, who was nearly deaf, got acquainted with Handel's music through his scores. It's the difference. Otherwise, Beethoven as a composers, is on the same level as Handel, Berlioz is also genius (very uneven, however), but Tchaikovsky - third rate (imho), Stravinsky - second rate (and with very controversial opinions on various topics).

Maybe? Handel was friends, and wrote to Telemann, who knew the Bach family. Perhaps he passed along some music?
@Musica-xo3uv4 жыл бұрын
According to the musicians, there is no proof that Handel knew the music of Bach. On the other hand, Bach did know some of Handel's compositions since he copied the Armida Abbandonata Cantata, Brockes Passion, Arias from Messiah, etc.
@AmiTVerma-to3vn4 жыл бұрын
@@Musica-xo3uv Handel was a celebrity figure much more popular than his counterparts - Bach or telemann for that matter. Bach not only was aware of Handel's music but unsuccessfully tried to meet him twice ; When Bach got news that handel is about to visit his hometown to meet his mother , he rushed himself to meet him only to find out that handel had left a day earlier.

I understand your sentiment, but I don't entirely agree. (Handel invented the organ/keyboard concerto. For my music degree: I wrote a thesis on the subject.) There's no doubt Bach wrote great music for organ and orchestra. However, they're not "concerti" in the strict or formal sense. Handel's organ concerti are closer to classical piano concertos ("sonata form") than Bach's works. Handel's organ concertos also place a greater demand on the performer, in terms of improvisation!

I'm sorry but this is decidedly inferior to the performance by the Academy of St. Martin's-in-the-Fields, Sir Neville Marriner conducting, and the incomparable George Malcolm on the organ. I first discovered this body of work by Handel on KZbin with the aforementioned forces and now it is gone and this is all that there is. With Marriner the tempo is brisk, the orchestra pin-point sharp, and the organist - well incomparable is the only word to use. I noticed Malcolm's superior talent in comparing it (unavoidably) with this organist who just does not have the accomplishment and precision. Get the other version, this one is not very satisfying.

Marriner is such a gifted leader; everything he does "spoils it" for the rest of them. His Messiah is definitive, as well. Your comments are spot on.

Too modern for Bach standards. Johann Sebastian wouldn’t think a Concerto for Organ will be a proper accompaniment other then just to feature a show like presentation, which is more modern & has nothing to do with the pure & divine in relationship with God in mind. That’s why Bach would’ve mentioned works like these of less importance then what the real truth stands out.

Bach didn't always write music with divine things in mind. Much of his music is secular in character. And Bach did write single movement organ concertos to begin some of his cantatas.

@@anthonypuccetti8779 I also think it important to bear in mind that for Handel too, these were incidental pieces; unlike Bach, who had a stipend, he had to live from his music, and the organ concertos proved an important draw for his oratorio audiences. I would also like to say that not all truth is religious: Handel was a humanist and his musical interpretation of the variety of human nature is on a par with Mozart and Verdi. He inspires me more than any other composer.

@@nickgooch9357 Handel believed in God and Christ and his world view would have been Christian as well as humanist because the Christian world view was still commonly held in the 18th century (Christendom, confessional monarchies, the kingship of Christ, the belief in the Church's doctrines about the Trinity and the Incarnation and Resurrection, creation and divine providence, the sovereingty of God over creation, the soul, angels, demons, original sin and personal sin, natural law morality, divine judgement), and his view of human nature would have been influended by Christian doctrine. Same with Mozart, who was a Catholic. Verdi was also a Catholic and wrote sacred compositions in his later years.

@@anthonypuccetti8779 The one does not exclude the other: Bach is a truly religious composer, whose music explores a spiritual journey towards God; Handel's rarely does. He was a Christian man, but his passion seems to have been for the human, and his dramatic creations are amongst the most moving of any composer's. I believe he is the antithesis of Bach, although their idiom, because of their exact contemporaneity, is often similar.

@@nickgooch9357 There is no separation between Christian and human. It is Christian doctrine that enlightens people about the full truth of humanity and human nature. The secular humanist view suppresses the truth and ignores the supernatural and metaphysical dimension of humanity. Much of what Bach write is not religious. Much of Handel wrote is religious. Handel's first great composition in his Dixit Dominus, written in Italy, which is one of his most inspired works. He wrote other Latin sacred music in Italy. He wrote the Chandos anthems which are as good as expressions of Christian faith as any of Bach's cantatas. He wrote three Te Deum's. He wrote a setting of the St. John Passion in German, and nine German songs, which were not commissioned, about God in nature. And the great religious themed oratorios.
