I woke this morning with this tune in my head. My elder sister use to sing and play this on our piano way back in the early 50's. The only words could I remember of the lyrics were 'cool glades, popped into google and found the song, how wonderful. this took me back to my childhood.. Thanx Mr Google.. One more notee of interest, this song and many other well known folksong were in this huge Brown leather bounded book from which Mother would play and sing to us all, sadly I only play only the guitar badly.

Thanks for this. I like to hear people's reminiscences of musical experience. I wanted the late James Bowman but this was the nearest. An excellent arrangement & rendition, but for me A. Scholl lacks warmth. I used to love singing this before my voice shattered at puberty. Sigh~

This is obviously a love song - but also very apt for a funeral for a loved one. Whatever happens - or doesn't happen - after death, we want the best for them. Personally, this song does evoke a version of Heaven. What could be better than a woodland glade with constant flowers, Handel - with excllt orch. accomp.? RIP your husband.

Lovely. Handel is my favourite composer and coming from a school without even a choir to sing this work as my first piece in a choir at university when I was 17 was absolutely wonderful. Even in her 50s my mother who also had absolute pitch sang well and it is so lucky that she was able to introduce us to music like this given her humble origins so that three of my children won music scholarships and the others all sing well too. Inspiring.

As SOMEONE WHO KNOWS the END YET , SINCE or BEFORE the BEGINNING ... Like the BEING who knows The APOCALYPSE before The BEGINNING .... ..even while He was searchng for his own origins.... ;) SO ..! Then Please, forgive me , to have been so terribly long , even boaring ( a nightmmare ) , but as have said Blaise Pascal , in another similar circumstance ... " Sorry Madame .. I hadn't the time , to be more short ...! " ;) As well as for many faults , even in orthograf or in grammar and vocabulary I suppose .. Now , it is being clear that English is not my mother language , which is obviously French...... I don't know why I was so fool and excessive ... An impulse ...? Because first .. I just wanted to write a short comment , as you can see in my purpose , further down here , and later , progressively , I became my own prisonner , prisonner of my game ... A little rest , of some effects , possibly ..? Of that terribly luminous and shining FULL MOON of those two previous days ...? I can hope at least , that this nonsense or completely crazy text , will a bit enjoy your time , even for a very little while... ! So Conclusion , here and not there at the normal "END " , Let me kiss U ... and tell U ... BYE...BYE.... ;) END :D ---------------------------------------------- BEGINNING ... ;) Thanks to my dear Father too , for the same excellent reason ... if not among other reasons , probably less obvious ... Except in the same spirit , the introducing to poetry ... But it was Later , and also with a little less heart , not deeply concerning for him , not as well as with his own tripes , unconsciously , but totally sincerely , as in the Case of MUSIC ... I always remember that day ...when I saw him crying when he was hearing César Franck ... ( Belgian Composer - Romantic , in this case : The CONCERTO in D for Piano ... a very dramatic Master-work ) ... also and going on...or ... " while I pass ...' as people use to say in french ... ( Thanks to the Temptations, almost the same day in september ... ;) for who knows..... and ...remember that day .. ) It was in a sad period for my Dad ..... AT the same time , I was thirteen , and I had just discovered the Great J.S..BACH : Violines Concertos , executed by Yehudi Menuhin , and from whom I have kept , after all this time , a very personnal "autographe" ... And even l now , it remains at an half meter of my right hand ... With those two famous L.P. records of BACH by Menuhin , his autograf , typical for a violonist , was also a wonderful present for my thirteenth birthday , from my mother and his last husband ... Later , and considering that he was an american jew .. , and also a very kind , generous and good person , I have often thought it was for me , so badly and superficially educated as a catholic, a sort of Bar-Mitsva , and in fact, it was one ...and finally a real good one ... happening ... or simpe event , as you like, see or prefer .... depending of your view .. ?! All this had happened in 1971 ... And now , more than forty years later ... Still searching the truth ... and on my way , I hope... ( Hello Cat Stevens , my first radio pop singer discovered 2 years after those events , .. ) Well , still on my way , and more than ever ..On The Way ... of the mystery of origins , and of astrological History , this Mystical anthropology .. I can tell you ( hurry to conclude.. ) that I have left , since a long time yet , the field of exclusive rationnal world or explanations , and then I'm always walking on ... the edge of reality ...( Hi ELVIS ) ... I know science , understand it , for a big part , trust all this and all who are working in it ... But , finally , I don''t too much care about those exclusive points of view , and then , near Astrology , Numerology , Symbology , Mythology , as well as rationnal sciences , philosophy , athéistic or not , etc.. I have began , since a long time yet , to study , at least often think about , the Bible , and , logically , to illuminate both of them , The Two Alliances , both Covenants , and all around this very deep questions , to further more understand Bible in regard of the Archétypal ontology - symbolism, and especially language of Astrology , , I have slowly began to study hebrew , first to understand or read a little more " original texts ", even few words .... But also in regards of numerology , so full of meanings basic , and always and for ever and ever , under the Magnificent Light of Astrology , under his Big Eye , and why not in a Trine ..? I mean a Tri-Angle , which was probably THREE ANGELS , and then , through the REAL Tradition and the Authentic KABBALAH .. which means only TRADITION , ... or watching ... The Glorious Tree of SEPHIROTS.... ... MORE OVER , and ESSENTIALLY ... .. let me Tell YOU This ... GREAT and FIRST .SECRET ... IS ( uncredible - the first reason why so ! They don't TRUST , they don't believe ) So easy job , the Snake ... .. So I repeat often The Great and First SECRET IS ... The MOTHER of ALL RELIGIONS and ALL SCIENCES ..was The ASTROLOGY and that was remain Since and For A VERY LONG TIME ... until GOD HIMSELF will change The SKIES and even The ... EARTH .. as He Had Promises .. and looking , comparing , etc... with ALL KINDS of KNOWLEDGE and WISDOM ...... THEIR UNIQUE , THEIR PRIME ... MOTHER , GRAND-MOTHER ... and FIRST ANCESTOR ... The QUEEN of ALL INITIATIC WAYS ... after ADAMA .... Had Been , Is , and Will BE ... and for a long time ... '( But ... TODAY mostly UNKNOWN .... and Horribly treatened or injured .. as a Monstruous Crime against Trut, Beauty and GOD Hilself .. and all His ROYAL COURT of ALL The HEAVENS and ANGELS .. and Millions and Millions Of The Celestial Cavalery ... ) IS ..... ASTROLOGY as A SIDERALOGY ... Cosmology and other meaning for WHAT Has Created ... EVEN ... SPACE and TIME ..or... The SPACE-TIME .. and vice-versa ..From Nothing ... and as .. All Other Basis even those deep and first concepts , Who' have founded OUR FIRST LANGUAGE and civilisations etc... SO..... The QUEEN of ALL KNOWLEDGES and of ALL ANCIENT WISDOMS Will For Ever SHINING in Our SOULS as The BEAUTYFULL MILKY-WAY ... driving all of US As The GOOD SHEPPERD , to OUR FATHER - GOD , WHo Is ... in ETERNITY ... and TRINE .... Epilogon Consider this TEXT also as an exercise to write in english , and I'm surely not too academic .... But ... ...and so , For this , as a Mysterious SIGN , sealed and almost lost in a so far past ( but never completely forgotten or un-significant ... Hear what I have saud , trying to show you great things... As I DO NOW... as I WAS ... BLOWING in The SO.FAR . The ShOFAR ... of The ARIES ... With a da capo aria of that era, it was written for the first, or "A" section to be sung as written the first time through the verse. The "B" section of the aria, "Where ere you tread..." is sung, and then the singer returns to the "A" section. During the second time through the "A" section, the singer would add ornementation to the written notes (hence the "high G").

@TheSauce Group how sad of you to decide to call someone on the internet that you don’t know an idiot. From a comment made literally 10 years ago. I’m a music teacher now, and I absolutely know what a countertenor is. I’m pretty sure that when I came across this KZbin video, it was one of the first times in my naivety to hear a countertenor. Call me ignorant at the time, but not an idiot. My students probably haven’t heard much work from countertenors - the maturity level of many of my students wouldn’t be able to handle hearing a countertenor, no matter how lovely his voice is. That doesn’t make them idiots. All of the other comments on this video are positive and about the video, not about the ignorance of the young. Read the room, pal. Oh, and have a nice day. :)

Find Bryn Tyrfel - or similar - singing this on KZbin - equally valid. In Handel's day casting was more gender fluid. It was all about quality & availability. And remember, people had much shorter lives & there wasn't the sheer number of singers we ha ve now, who luckily for us, can travel a lot.

William Congreve may have put the libretto together from various sources, but the evocative poetry for this well-known aria is by Alexander Pope, an extract from Summer, the Second Pastoral, the whole of which is a lilting piece of mythical whimsy.

@jutescrim I don't honestly think it's possible to ruin music from composers on the level of Handel.... you could say it's not your cup of tea, or even that you "can't stand it" is fine, but to say a renowned performer ruined a piece just shows ignorance and intolerance toward other people's interpretations of art, and disrespect to the composer.
