حتى لاننسى شي من التاريخ تقديم الدكتور فريد الجراح .عندما سمعت هذه الموسيقى لأوّل مرّة، لم أكن اعرف شيئا عن خلفيّتها ولا عن مناسبتها. لكني تخيّلت منظرا لبحر وسفن حربية وتمرينات وربّما ألعاب نارية. هذه هي بعض عناصر الصورة المشهدية كما تعكسها أجواء موسيقى الماء لجورج فريدريك هاندل. موسيقى فخمة واحتفالية بامتياز. وما يؤكّد هذه الصفة، بشكل خاصّ، هو غلبة الآلات النفخية على نسيجها الأوركستراليّ. حتى إن كنت مثلي لا تستسيغ سماع أصوات هذه الآلات الحادّة في كلّ حين، إلا انك ستقدّر عاليا براعة المؤلّف في اختيار كيف ومتى تدخل كلّ آلة ومتى تتوقّف. موسيقى الماء يمكن أن توحي بانتصار عسكريّ، كما أنها تصلح لأن تكون نشيدا وطنيّا لبلد ما. لذا لم استغرب عندما لاحظت أن محطّة البي بي سي اختارت هذه الموسيقى بالذّات كإعلان عن بدء بثّ برامجها كلّ يوم. لكن، أوّلا، ما هي قصّة ظهور هذه الموسيقى؟ في عام 1717، طلب الملك الانجليزيّ جورج الأوّل من الموسيقيّ جورج فريدريك هاندل أن يؤلّف قطعة موسيقية كي تُعزف على متن يخت الملك الذي سينقله هو وضيوفه من قصر الوايتهول في رحلة عبر نهر التيمز تنتهي عند تشيلسي. كان عمر هاندل وقتها لا يتجاوز الثانية والثلاثين. وقد شرع في تنفيذ تلك المهمّة على الفور وأنجزها قبل الموعد المضروب بأسابيع. وقد أسمى عمله "موسيقى الماء" لسببين: الأوّل أنه كُتب ليُعزف فوق الماء. والثاني: أن أنغام العمل تحاكي في ارتفاعها وانخفاضها حركة الماء. في اليوم المحدّد، أخذ هاندل مع أفراد الفرقة الموسيقية أماكنهم على متن قارب مجاور ليخت الملك. وكان النهر ممتلئا بالقوارب التي جاء أصحابها ليستمعوا إلى الموسيقى. وقد سُرّ الملك جورج الأوّل كثيرا بهذه الموسيقى لدرجة انه طلب من الفرقة أن تعيد عزفها أربع مرّات في ذلك اليوم. واستمرّ العزف إلى ما بعد منتصف ليل ذلك اليوم، ما شكّل إرهاقا كبيرا للعازفين. وقد حدث بعد ذلك أن تحوّلت هذه القطعة إلى واحدة من أشهر الأعمال الموسيقية الكلاسيكية في جميع العصور. ويقال أن الملك كان قبل ذلك غاضبا على هاندل لسبب ما. وكان تأليف الأخير لهذه الموسيقى وسيلة لاسترضاء الملك وتطييب خاطره. الأصل الألمانيّ للملك ولهاندل كان من العوامل التي قرّبت بين الرجلين. وقد أصبحا من أهمّ الشخصيّات التي عرفتها انجلترا. وظلّ هاندل إلى اليوم الموسيقيّ المفضّل لدى الانجليز عموما. أما جورج الأوّل فقد نجح في تأسيس سلالة ملكية ما تزال تحكم انجلترا إلى اليوم في شخص حفيدة حفيد جورج، أي الملكة الحالية اليزابيث الثانية. وهناك إشارات كثيرة تؤكّد أن الملك أراد أن تكون موسيقى الماء أداة دعاية سياسية له. كان بحاجة إلى عمل ما يعزّز صورته كحاكم جديد على انجلترا، بعد أن أثارت بعض قراراته وتصرّفاته جدلا واسعا بين الناس. في السنوات الأولى من حكمه، لم يكن جورج الأوّل يحظى بأيّة شعبية تُذكر، لافتقاره إلى أيّ قدر من الذكاء أو الكاريزما. وكان معارضوه يدعمون ابنه الأكبر جورج الثاني الذي سيصبح ملكا في ما بعد. وقد أشار عليه مستشاروه بأن ينظّم حدثا ملكيّا فخما يلفت إليه الأنظار ويثير إعجاب سكّان لندن، وفي نفس الوقت يسرق الأضواء من ابنه الساخط عليه والذي رفض حضور العرض الموسيقيّ. اختار هاندل لموسيقى الماء شكل "السويت" الذي يعني بالعربية فاصل أو وصلة أو متوالية موسيقية، وفي لغة الموسيقى الكلاسيكية مجموعة من الحركات الموسيقية المتتالية التي يربط بينها وحدة الفكرة والنغم. وأصل هذا النوع من الموسيقى يعود إلى القرن الرابع عشر، وبلغ أوج ازدهاره خلال عصر الباروك، وبرع فيه موسيقيّون كثر من أشهرهم باخ وهاندل وآخرون. وموسيقى الماء هي أيضا عبارة عن قطع صغيرة مؤلّفة لأوركسترا مصغرّة لا يتجاوز عدد أفرادها الخمسين عازفا. وكتبها هاندل لآلات الفلوت والباسون والكمان والبوق والترومبيت والاوبوا. أي انه استخدم للموسيقى جميع الآلات الموسيقية المعروفة في عصر الباروك، باستثناء الهاربسيكورد والتيمباني لأنه كان من المستحيل جلبهما فوق القارب. يتألّف سويت موسيقى الماء من ثلاث حركات رئيسية يتفرّع عنها واحد وعشرون لحنا وتتضمّن مجموعة من المينويتات والأنغام الراقصة. وفي تلك الرحلة النهرية، عُزفت بعض أجزائها فقط، لكنها لم تُطبع كمجموعة كاملة إلا بعد وفاة هاندل بسنوات. وبعد ثلاثين عاما، أي في 1749، سيؤلّف هاندل موسيقاه المشهورة الأخرى الألعاب الناريّة في عهد الملك جورج الثاني. وكثيرا ما تظهر هاتان المقطوعتان معا في التسجيلات كمجموعة واحدة. المعروف أن هاندل ولد في هالي بألمانيا في فبراير عام 1685 وتوفّي في لندن في ابريل 1759. وقد عاش في البداية أربع سنوات في ايطاليا حيث عمل هناك وألّف بعض الأعمال الاوبرالية والموسيقى الدينية. وفي سنّ الخامسة والعشرين، ذهب إلى لندن باحثا عن وظيفة. وكان جورج الأوّل قد سمع بعض موسيقاه، فاستدعاه وعيّنه مديرا للموسيقى في القصر، ثم لم يلبث أن أصبح الموسيقيّ الرسميّ للبلاط. صحيح أن موسيقى الماء عند ظهورها وُظّفت كأداة للدعاية السياسية. لكن كان هناك سبب آخر في نجاحها الفوريّ وفي شهرتها المستمرّة إلى اليوم، وهو أنها كانت تحفة موسيقية حقيقية. أما هاندل نفسه فقد كان معروفا بمزاجه العنيف وباعتزازه الشديد بنفسه واحتقاره لزملائه من الموسيقيين الانجليز. ومما يُروى عنه أن هدّد ذات مرّة بإلقاء سوبرانو زميلة من النافذة إن لم تنفّذ تعليماته وتفعل بالضبط ما يقوله. بيتهوفن وصف هاندل ذات مرّة بأنه أعظم مؤلّف موسيقيّ. وأضاف: أمام قبره لا املك إلا أن احني ركبتي وأخفض رأسي احتراما". واليوم وبعد مرور ثلاثمائة عام على ظهورها، ما تزال موسيقى الماء تحتفظ بجاذبيّتها وسحرها القديم. وقد أصبحت أجزاء كثيرة منها مشهورة جدّا ومألوفة كثيرا، مثل مقطع اللا هورن بايب (الفيديو فوق) والذي وُظّف كثيرا في الإعلانات والتلفزيون والراديو وفي أعمال سينمائية مثل فيلم "قوى الطبيعة" وفيلم "جمعية الشعراء الموتى" وغيرهما. ارق تحياتي الى اصحاب الذوق الرفيع

The king was originally from Germany....He was the Elector of Hanover. Handel was his court musician......but defected to England to start a music business of his own. The king ( fortunately for Handel ) forgave Handel for his disloyalty.

I have to revise my earlier comment of a couple of weeks ago. I was too quick to criticize the natural horns but doing more research about natural horns I discovered that some modern "natural" horns have a couple of holes in the tubing to allow them to intonate "correctly" to modern ears. But they were not made that way in the baroque era so the sound of the horns on this performance is as they would have sounded at the time. I purchased this version of the Water Music/Fireworks and it's growing on me...tempos and all! I would now say that if you have/enjoy multiple different performances of this work, you should have this one!

Wonderful. In my career I played the Water Music suites numerous times, and in general, hated the tempos conductors chose, so often slow and sluggish. These are the tempos I imagined. Again, wonderful!

The Handel suites are masterpieces that gives us an immense pleasure to listen to the fastest and slowest movements follow, completely integrated with an harmony that only a musical genius achieves. So that we don't forget anything from history Introduced by Dr. Farid Al Jarrah When I first heard this music, I knew nothing of its background or occasion. But I imagined a view of the sea, warships, exercises, and perhaps fireworks. These are some of the elements of the landscape as reflected in the atmosphere of George Frideric Handel's Water Music. Luxurious and festive music par excellence. What confirms this characteristic, in particular, is the predominance of wind instruments over its orchestral texture. Even if you, like me, dislike hearing the sounds of these sharp instruments all the time, you will highly appreciate the author's ingenuity in choosing how and when to enter each instrument and when to stop. Water music can suggest a military victory, and it can also be the national anthem of a country. Therefore, I was not surprised when I noticed that the BBC chose this particular music as an announcement to start broadcasting its programs every day. But, first, what is the story behind the emergence of this music? In 1717, the English King George I asked the musician George Frederick Handel to compose a piece of music to be played on board the King's yacht, which he and his guests would take from Whitehall Palace on a voyage across the Thames ending at Chelsea. Handel was only thirty-two years old at the time. He proceeded to carry out the task immediately and completed it weeks ahead of schedule. He called his work "Water Music" for two reasons: The first is that it was written to be played over water. The second: that the melodies of work simulate, in their height and lowness, the movement of water. On the appointed day, Handel and the orchestra took their places on a boat next to the king's yacht. The river was full of boats whose owners came to listen to music. King George I was so pleased with this music that he asked the band to play it four times that day. The playing continued until after midnight that day, which constituted a great fatigue for the musicians. It then happened that this piece became one of the most famous classical musical works of all time. It is said that the king had previously been angry with Handel for some reason. The latter's composition of this music was a means of appeasing the king and pacifying him. The German origin of King and Handel was one of the factors that brought the two men closer. They became one of the most important personalities that England knew. Handel remained to this day the favorite musician of the English in general. As for George I, he succeeded in establishing a royal dynasty that still rules England today in the person of George's granddaughter, the current Queen Elizabeth II. There are many indications that the king wanted water music to be a tool of political propaganda for him. He needed to do something to enhance his image as the new ruler of England, after some of his decisions and actions sparked widespread controversy among the people. In the early years of his reign, George I was unpopular, as he lacked any amount of intelligence or charisma. His opponents supported his eldest son, George II, who would later become king. His advisors advised him to organize a grandiose royal event that would attract attention and impress the people of London, while at the same time stealing the spotlight from his disgruntled son, who refused to attend the concert. For water music, Handel chose the form of "Sweet", which in Arabic means a break, connection, or musical sequence. In the language of classical music, a group of successive musical movements linked by the unity of idea and melody. The origin of this type of music dates back to the fourteenth century, and reached its peak during the Baroque era, and many musicians excelled in it, the most famous of which are Bach, Handel and others. Water music is also a small piece composed for a mini orchestra, the number of which does not exceed fifty players. Handel wrote it for the flute, bassoon, violin, trumpet, trumpet, and oboe. That is, he used for music all the musical instruments known in the Baroque era, except for the harpsichord and the timpani because it was impossible to bring them over the boat. Sweet Water Music consists of three main movements with twenty-one melodies and includes a group of minoets and dance melodies. On that river voyage, only some of its parts were played, but it was not printed as a complete set until years after Handel's death. Thirty years later, in 1749, Handel would compose his other famous fireworks during the reign of King George II. These two pieces often appear together in recordings as a single group. It is known that Handel was born in Halle, Germany in February 1685 and died in London in April 1759. He lived initially for four years in Italy, where he worked and composed some operas and religious music. At the age of twenty-five, he went to London in search of a job. George I had heard some of his music, so he summoned him and appointed him director of music in the palace, and soon he became the official court musician. It is true that when water music appeared, it was employed as a tool for political propaganda. But there was another reason for its instant success and its continued popularity today, which was that it was a true musical masterpiece. Handel himself was known for his violent temper, pride, and contempt for fellow English musicians. It is reported that he once threatened to throw a fellow soprano out the window if she did not follow his instructions and did exactly what he said. Beethoven once described Handel as the greatest musical composer. He added: In front of his grave, I can only bend my knees and lower my head in respect. Today, three hundred years after its appearance, water music still retains its ancient charm and charm. Many parts of it have become very famous and very familiar, such as the clip La Horn Pipe (the video above), which was used frequently in advertisements, television and radio, and in cinematic works such as the movie "Forces of Nature" and the movie "The Society of Dead Poets" and others. Who would not fall in love with the conductor, Hervé Niquet? Let's just start with the jacket -- shall I say Count Dracula, holding you in his spell? And when you get a chance, check out his shoe choice. BUT the head and face ......... I think invigorating, energizing and sharpening the senses vino tinto is his favorite libation, giving his face a slightly acidic tinge. Truly FRENCH. I need to google him. I also need to google the ratio of baton vs. not baton wielding conductors.

No baton makes the whole performance more organic and he is at one with his musicians & not interfering with their performance. The best renditioning of the Fireworks & Water Music there is.

One can imagine river water flowing very fast due to rain and wind storm and mountains. Hãndel composes 'Water Suite representing the movement of water in nature. The French horns notes are so superbly natural in its sound, 'it feels the water striking at big rough rocks.' It is an imaginary vision of rowing in the Colorado River.

Man I haven't thought about that show in ages. I used to love it!

Tempi too fast? Consider the hunting background from which natural horns developed, and the shorter Baroque bow which makes faster playing easier. Faster tempi also give the wind and brass players' lungs a break. I find the tempi refreshing, as opposed to so many lethargic Romantically inspired readings. Rather like joyful dance music. The Air at 15:00 takes on a new uplifting character, highlighting the syncopated suspensions. The conductor humbly goes without a podium, staying "in the mix" with the strings and looking up to the winds and brass. I think all are having a fun time. Let us remember this is "Royal Muzak" and not formal concert music, so please be mercuful with those who applaud between movements. All in all a very uplifting performance! Bravo!

The horns are also stuck to a "natural" tuning system when the natural harmonic series has to be made to work. We are used to piano tuning which is another kind of compromise. @ענבל בריל They sound out of tune because they are very primitive. They have no valves like modern instruments. They are just plain tubes, which are so long they can play notes very close to each other without needing valves, but they won't have the same intervals as modern horns. In technical terms, you're hearing an instrument that can only have pythagorean intervals (the horns) played against instruments with more modern tuning.

+Joseph Erhard-Hudson Yes,I agree with you...,and it was nice that you explained about antique instruments.This performance is probably as close to an authentic/vintage concert in Handel's time that our modern ears would hear!I would add that during Beethoven's time an orchestra's repertoire would include 2-3 symphonies,sonatas,suites,etc...,and a concert back then could last up to 8 hours!

There is no way I will ever believe a person over 300 years ago even knew what music was let alone could compose something so complex as this. There weren’t even real instruments, metronomes, music schools, or internet back then. It’s impossible to do this without so much technology and help.

John Smith That’s so insulting and wrong that it’s not funny. There were real instruments back then just as there are now. And the Baroque evolved from the Renaissance which in turn evolved from Medieval music, so of course they would know what music is.

England had its very own baroque master in Henry Purcell as well. What happened after the period there was a bit poor - of course the great Joseph Haydn did some fantastic things there, but he was from and returned to Austria. The English Music had to wait a bit - a couple of nice things, like the elgar cello-concerto aside - until it was resurrected by Benjamin Britten.

I prefer modern wind instruments-for clarity,for exactness,for impact-and for just plain "purity" of sound. Modern instruments DO represent improvements over their earlier counterparts. Judging from his biographies,I tend to think that Handel himself would agree with this view.
