I think usually for commerical, it is smooth motion(slider, gimbal, dolly, etc) and steady shots. For short film, tv series, documential, handheld/shoulder rig motion is fine.

One thing that made me fall back in love with my Ronin S was watching a “10 shots to get with your gimbal” type video where the guy using it was an avid gimbal user for most of his videography. He had a couple shots that looked like he was using a steadicam. When he broke down the settings he used & how exactly he achieved the shot he made me realize just how much I wasn’t utilizing my gimbal. Mainly the smoothness levels. It was something that completely changed the way it looked and felt. Then he spoke about how much side & back handles are needed. It changes the weight distribution so much that it actually changes how effective you are with and he was completely right. Part of the reason my shots looked the way they did was because the heft of it all & holding it at such awkward angles for extended periods of time. Handles made it so I could set up shots better & not just “get the shot” but pay more attention to it & the screen for that matter (because the handles have MOUNTS!!!). Long story short, man. When you get the chance, dive back into your gimbal for a few. Change the smoothness settings on them & add some handles. It’ll make you a believer again.

Lovely skating shots in there man. I found myself leaning more towards the glidecam when I used to shoot on dslr because the lack of weight made for jittery handheld footage. Good points, the only thing i dont agree on is the focus pulling. I would love a hand held system but its really expensive considering i dont even own a cage. For my ronin i bought the focus motor for 200$ and it works perfect, i dont have any issues with it

You said it takes really long to balance a gimbal. Well, yes. But I personally have a gimbal with motor locks which makes it very easy to balance, and it has an arca swiss quick release system, so you can just put the gimbal down, take the camera off and on and it stays perfectly balanced!

I am running a BMPCC 6K and I am so curious on whether to get this or not. I mean the wireless follow focus on that gimbal seems nice and the other benefit of this gimbal is its heavy loading capabilities of I believe 4.2kg - would love to hear your thoughts about that and if you think it's worth or not (it's even cheaper than most of DJI's gimbals) Thanks man!

Something I have learned is when it comes to handheld the bigger the better. Small cameras have less weight and the way DSLR's are designed the placement if the sensor in comparison to the rest of the body makes it even worst. Bigger is better! Size does matter ;D

The cons he mentioned don't have to be cons. There are enough Gimbals (Weebill S) that are working with 18650s. Easy, cheap and fast. I have a baseplate on the Gimbal that is compatible with the cage I use so easy to put on or off with no balancing. (Fuji X-T4, Cage, Fringer, Sigma 18-35mm) Focus pulling motor is actually also very cheap for Zhiyun products and works flawless. I'm no shill for Zhiyun but there's always a workaround for things... ;)
