There are many reasons why we fumble on the high volley. Sometimes its Technique, other times it tactic. In this video I cover both. HAVE FUN😁

Fabulous instruction! Missed so many high volleys last night I couldn’t sleep and it was exactly as you described. I was trying to go back opposite my movement and dragging ball long or wide or in the net! Heading back out to practice with this video in mind! Could you consider doing a serve video dedicated to serving to the ad side for doubles or singles! I find it harder to figure out how and where to serve on ad in doubles particularly or which serve to hit to get out wide angle as on dice I would hit slice which is harder for right handed player on ad side!

This is a great video, especially distinguishing between the shoulder height vs. high volley. I’ve been (naturally) taking too big a swing with the shoulder - with unfortunate results :) Will work on eliminating the shoulder with more focus on the forearm. Thanks!

@@ironwilltennis Thanks a lot for your reply. - Can you please clarify about how firm the wrist should be when we use that flex? - I seem to have a problem with the racket angle in volley. If I change the grip a bit I can do the forehand volley well but the backhand volley will float and vice versa. Do you change your grip when doing forehand and backhand volleys?

Hi Will, I have been watching your video for month and learned tons of good stuff. Would you please do a video on how to return serve on one-hand back hand? My one hand back hand is good during slow balls or practice, but when it comes too fast and shoulder high or above, I miss a lot. so I ends up slice or block back... when play with higher level players they pick up on that and hitting kick serve to my back hand or fast/higher ball to my back hand. slice is good but always put me in defensive mode, and lose the point later on... can u do a video on how to practice that? try to return serve using my one hand back hand to hit the ball on rise, so hard to time it...

Hey Will, Just saw a video that got me thinking. It is about body rotation on forehand. kzbin.info/www/bejne/nYfGmKpofs6njZI . While logical how this coach explains the need for body rotation, there is something that I seem to struggle with: On my forehand I have the habit of moving my (non hitting) left arm too fast to the side which leads to opening my chest too early. The other extreme - as demonstrated in the above video - is not moving your left arm. When I look at most pros, I see them even raise their hand while they execute their shot. So my question to you is: What is your opinion. Since you have this way of simplification in most your videos, I look forward to your take on this. Thanks Will
@ironwilltennis
@ironwilltennis Жыл бұрын
sorry for the late response, there was a lot to unpack with that video. there were some points to it but there are definitely some incomplete ideas that will cause big problems for people trying to take that info at face value. I can address that in a video if you like. but in a short answer NOOOOO lol
@willwahl9225
@willwahl9225 Жыл бұрын
@@ironwilltennis Thanks Will ! Yup I get it. Simplification seems the answer again. Less is more. THe more technical one gets, the more confusing it is. Reminds me of the analogy of the centipede who was asked how he walks... But ya - video on this is appreciated.

This is so helpful. I get this ball very often when I serve and volley. You're rushing into the net but this ball is not quite an overhead (and it's too fast to setup as an overhead, but not a normal volley either). I actually experimented with a friend on how to best hit this shot and the determination that I came to is exactly this little flick of the forearm. I thought, this is probably not right as I see pros hit across their bodies as they move sideways to the net but you've showed me that it's ok to do this.

Thanks for covering the backhand high volley too, as I struggled with it yesterday in a match. The problem I see with your recommendation is if the opponent sent you a high volley down the line, so if you do as you say, it'll go straigh to them offering them another passing shot. How would you go about shortening the angle cross court? or is this just a defense shot, and you shouldn't try to close out the point?
@ironwilltennis
@ironwilltennis Жыл бұрын
If you are within the one step range even if they are standing in front of you, the ball is moving off the court away from them because you're hitting at an angle still. If you're outside that 1 step, then play neutral and force them to try a second pass

The easy answer is look to hold ground or move forward aggressively. Even if you miss some of the shots, your opponent will have to think twice about committing to the forward move

Great video on the high volley. I used to just block it.. Ill try the flex :) I have a question on your previous video on the drop shot pls. I observed that you open up the racket face and float the drop shot in? Is that correct? I hope you do a vid on the drop shot technique as well. Im aware that you need to absorb the pace and to use it as a finisher but I presonally find it difficult to execute and most of the time it goes longer than i intended. Im confused as to whether to hit it with a closed racket such as the slice or open it up.. Searched youtube but no one really speaks about how to do hit it. Thanks :)))

Thank I hope it helps you. I did 2 videos on the drop shot where I cover those questions. I may have answered it in the other video. I'm not sure which one you watched though. The float is good but as I said you want the high point on your own side. Low slices are a different skill all their own
