Yes, it was intense. But when it happens, the key is to not panic and keep your wits about yourself. My suspicions are that they were without a queen, and in the process of replacing. I use double screen boards to split my hives. That split didn't take, so instead of trying again, I just recombined the bees into a strong hive because we were already in the middle of a strong honey flow. Well, I think they were too strong, and swarmed. Or, it could have been any one of a multitude of reasons. That hive settled back down and are now calm and strong. I'm estimating pulling at least 120 pounds of honey from them this year.
