Awesome video Justin! I really liked what you did. Sure wish I had time to make something like that. Great work!
@JustinThorup11 жыл бұрын
Thanks Kevin - Yeah I wish I had more time too. I made that ring 2 years ago and I just now finished the video on it. I hope that doesn't mean it will take me 2 more years for the next video. I'll have to try and squeeze more time out and make it happen sooner.

I Called to Moran to offer my diamond engagement ring, and also with that said said, he was a sincere as well as simple expert! He was interesting and also person with me as well as has a wealth of understanding, that gave me convenience without any type of pushy sales methods. Overall, I had an excellent experience from the minute he chose up the phone to schedule me a same-day appt., to showing up in his neat, clean, and risk-free office, to market my ruby ring. Quick, very easy, and also effective! Hands down a pleasant experience and smooth process with a very realistic person!

Sure, it's called a GRS BenchMate. It's a must have when working with jewelry.

What is the solution that you are burning on the ring like that?
@JustinThorup9 жыл бұрын
Ezra Edlund That is boric acid mixed with denatured alcohol. The boric acid helps prevent oxygen to reach the surface so that the solder can flow more easily. The alcohol is just to easily burn it onto the surface.
@ezraedlund36819 жыл бұрын
+Justin Thorup So the boric acid and alcohol are burned onto the ring and then is soldered, and then I noticed that you applied the solution a few times during the process. do you have to clean it off after a certain amount of time or will it just burn away?
@JustinThorup9 жыл бұрын
Ezra Edlund Yes once you use the boric acid solution it's good for that session meaning you can solder a joint, or a few other spots in that area. Then you let it cool and add the ring to a pickling solution which is another acid that will take of the boric acid. Then if it needs more work somewhere you re coat it with the boric acid and start all over. Once it's headed up with the boric acid on you then also apply a flux to the spot you are soldering. The reason you add the boic acid is to keep the ring clean while soldering and the flux to keep the solder flowing in a clean environment without oxygen getting to it. If you don't use it your ring will oxidize and no solder would flow.
@ezraedlund36819 жыл бұрын
+Justin Thorup Thank you for explaining it to me. I'm working on making an engagement ring for my girlfriend and I was trying to figure out the correct soldering method. And of course with an engagement ring I want it to last, so I better do it right haha.
@JustinThorup9 жыл бұрын
Ezra Edlund Good luck and the right method will just make it easier to do with less problems. Have fun making it. I'm sure she will love it.

my father was a goldsmith and I can say that he's an expert in this craft. too bad father time caught up on him. during his prime, he'll make that ring in a day. that is because they are paid by how many they can make not how many hours they work. but that doesn't mean quality suffers. all tools are also manual such as drill and blowtorch (where you need to kick the pump to control the air). i tried to learn it but he said i'm too weak, lol. i'm from Philippines by the way, from the jewelry capital of the country, meycauayan, bulacan.

How much would a ring like this cost?
@JustinThorup7 жыл бұрын
A lot depends on diamond quality and metal cost at the time the ring is made, etc. If you would like a quote on a similar ring you can contact me through my site. www.danaarts.com/contact/

really beautiful ring. i'm just disappointed that this video doesn't show the actual stone setting...just after pictures
@JustinThorup8 жыл бұрын
Lol, I got too involved and didn't really stop to film that part. If you could only see my bench and the area around me you might understand. It's a tight fit just for me to sit there. Filming is not easy for me at the bench because of this. I got what I could. Maybe another video someday I'll film stone setting.

+Justin Thorup please do! I'm currently interested in how engagement/wedding rings are made and this video is probably one of my favorite ones which results to more of my kind of ring style. Thanks for sharing it!

Hey I loved the music. The close up of the fire really got me going to haha. Is It a denatured alcohol /borax/tsp mix ? Awesome final product, the diamonds really made it pop!
@JustinThorup7 жыл бұрын
Thanks, and yes it's denatured alcohol/borax. I don't measure it, just mix it how I like it.
@eivindkofod17746 жыл бұрын
Borax? Sure, it is not Boric acid? Borax is normally as a flux, boric acid to prevent firescale.
