Just wanted to say polys are all lightfast tested and all but like three will not fade for 100 years. Also, I often use a dark blue instead of black to shade reds, it gives more depth. If you do make more, give indigo a try in your reds. They turned out fabulous, now we need reindeer ones! OOO what if you used sepia tones and white for a vintage look!!! OMG sparkle paste for snow!!! Also if you’re gifting them, putting the year on would be awesome for people to remember. Possibilities are endless 🤔

These ornaments are absolutely gorgeous. The pencil crayons that you are using are no longer available at Simon Says Stamp. Are there any other pencils we could use?

I had no idea these wood slices would take colored pencil so well or look so great. I just had visions of copic or tombow running/spreading/spoiling. These are a real success. Love them!

These wood slice ornaments are absolutely gorgeous. I love Cardinals even though I’ve never seen one in person, only in pictures. I never thought to color on the wood with colored pencils. I only have Prismacolor pencils. Will these work even though they are waxy? I probably don’t have time to get the wood, color and get in the mail before Christmas. However, the wood slices might be on sale or clearance after Christmas and then I can make them for next year. I’ll have to look and see if I have a Cardinal stamp. I know I have quite a few bird stamps. By the way it was so nice to see your pretty face before your tutorial. Most of the time we never see faces.

Hi Nichol! I bought some wood circles to do this with back in the Spring, but I guess mine are only 2” diameter, yours look like they are about 4-5”, is that about right? I was thinking of trying a layering stamp set like the Altenew cardinals, but your technique looks so beautiful, I will have to try both ways and see! 💕

Opt out of any sealer (spray, brush on, etc.) instead use clear contact paper, cut the circle just bigger than the wood, place over the top and gently burnish down. Cut off the excess and it will last a lifetime.

I picked up some of these to make ornaments for my closest friends this year but have been unsure how to do it. I wonder if the VersaFine Clair Nocturne ink would work just as well? I have the regular VersaFine black pad, but it was leaving fuzzies on my stamps, so I bought the Clair to replace it. Any thoughts on that Nichol? Your ornaments turned out BEAUTIFUL, btw! :)

Did you have a problem with your versafine smearing when coloring over it with your pencils? Mine is smearing a bit.

I didn't but maybe let it dry a bit first because it does take longer to dry. You could also switch to a different ink.
