@Chenster24 One finds it laughable that someone who seems to have a clear lack of historical knowledge thinks it appropriate to try and justify their argument by attempting personal attacks. Are your Party paymasters not paying you the 50 cents you were promised anymore? Or do you lack the ability to see that us Hong Kong people are proud of being Chinese - you have lost your sense of what it means to be Chinese. For you, it is all about "national pride" when in actual fact you shun the Chinese people who preserved the national language, who practiced traditional customs, and embraced British culture to create something unique and beautiful. As a side note, how much of Imperial Chinese History do they actually teach up North? Doesn't seem like much. If you've actually learned anything about the failures of the Qing, then you would know why they suffered such embarrassing defeat at the hands of the British TWICE. Ultimately ceding and expanding the territory to Britain, which was later settled and developed into the international finance centre which continues to thrive to this day. With regards to your comments about growing a spine and being a "spineless dog who loves to eat the shit of foreigners", perhaps it would be better for yourself to actually reflect on your attitude. We Hong Kong people have been actively voicing our thoughts, practicing our freedom of speech and standing up for ourselves; to call us spineless is as sensible as denying the 天安门 massacre of 1989, which I am sure you have heard of, but no doubt ignore because you have been so intensively brainwashed to ignore it. To "eat the shit of foreigners" is such a strange term, especially when Hong Kong has preserved so much more of China's traditional history than the mainland; not only do we read and write in traditional Chinese, we speak and listen in the most original dialect, Cantonese. I can see English is probably not a language you know very well (I know they don't teach it so well up North), I'll simplify this for you: It is better to be a second-class citizen under a British government which listens to you, than a second-class citizen under a authoritarian communist Chinese government which would rather kill you than pay you any attention. By the way, seeing as you have access to KZbin, you probably have access to Google, [which is also banned in China] so that means you can do all the research into the aforementioned topics so that you won't look like such a fool the next time you touch a keyboard. It's been fun mate, but I would seriously consider taking a walk outside and actually seeing the world as it is, rather than simply being a 井底之蛙. You can consider this a goodbye and farewell as I am tired of having to shut commies like you down with facts.

For those that don’t know: to the anger of the Chinese, the Queen intentionally didn’t attend this handover. It symbolised both her own and the crown’s disapproval. British colonists actually did well in 70s to 90s. They built up public house, established anti-corruption organization which effectively cracked down corruption, turned Hong Kong into a wealthy international city, and most importantly gave Hong Kong freedom and partial democracy. Some of the british governors also cared about the interest of Hong Kong people, even against the interest of Britain. For example, in 1992 Chris Patten(the man which stand in middle in 2:20), the last governor of HK, had launched a political reform giving more democracy to HK people, but China government went against the proposal. They shouted their word of hate toward Mr Patten, calling him running dog and “a sinner of a thousand years”, and did their to stop the political reform. Some British business leader also opposed the reform, as they thought it would harm the relationship between China and Britain and it would adversely affect their interest. Nowadays, the chief executive of Hong Kong only concern about the interest of Beijing, and just directly receive order from their Beijing's master. CCP is more shameful, they like to take credit for almost everything, claim many British legacies as their own gifts to HK. I just hear a Chinese official claim that Hong Kong people have no right to protest under the British rule. It is a fucking lie and an absolute nonsense.

Indeed, the Communist Chinese regime repeatedly threatened the colonial government not to implement any form of real democracy in Hong Kong. The British first tried to introduce pathways into democracy right after WWII. Mark Young, governor of Hong Kong at the time, proposed a series of political reforms, which were turned down due to the Chinese's military threats. If you want to know more, search "Young Plan" online to know more. With the huge hindrance by Hong Kong's northern neighbour, Hong Kong did not become a democratic society, like many other former British colonies after WWII. Yet, the British had built Hong Kong into a free, prosperous society, especially 1970s onwards.

It’s a shame Hong Kong couldn’t have taken on a similar status as other overseas British territory’s like Gibraltar and the Falkland Islands who when it comes to domestic matters have large amounts of autonomy. China cannot be trusted with Hong Kong, the UK will never be able to get the colony back, it should however offer full British citizenship to Hong Kong residents. Hong Kong forever in our hearts ♥️🇬🇧

calihartley2010 completely out of order giving them citizenship will be great for are economy before you use your liberal argument I am right wing Conservative. This would be great if we could give these hard working propel jobs it will boost are economy especially after this virus.

calihartley2010 Ridiculous. The people of Hong Kong used to be British and under the Sino-British declaration we have a responsibility for them. Their rights and freedoms are currently being suppressed by the Chinese Communist party and therefor I am proud that the Uk is providing our former colonial citizens with an escape route if they wish to take it. 🇬🇧🇭🇰 Diversity is a fantastic thing, great foods, mostly hard working people, it can go wrong when you do not have suitable education and integration. That problem however is not with diversity itself, it’s with the ignorance that exists between cultures that leads to fear and hate.

One of the saddest days of my life so far, June 30, 1997. I watch this video along with others that are online and relive this day as often as I can. It might seem strange but I feel pride in the fact that the world was all together that day watching this special moment in time as sad as it was. Hong Kong is the Pearl of Asia. It was the diamond of the British Commonwealth and it still is the most dynamic and prosperous place on the planet. I have never had the privilege to visit Hong Kong but I have over the last 19 years studied the city, the people, along with the news that comes from this city. My first experience of studying Hong Kong came as a school project in 1996. I was studying International Trade and I chose Hong Kong to study as a country profile for my class assignment. Over the years, I fell in love with this oasis. Since I was a child I have collected flags from each place that I have visited. The one flag that I have added to my collection from a place that I have never visited is the British Blue Ensign of Hong Kong. It is by far my favourite. The lion meets the dragon. What a beautiful friendship indeed.

+Kenneth Cook I was born in 1994, so I am only 3 years old during the handover, but watching how the Commie Chinese are screwing over us on a daily basis just makes me wish that I was born in the 80s. Alas, if only we can alter the history....

+Ryan C.T. Lee You can't wish that your life had been different. It is what it is. Having been born in the 1980's would not have changed the outcome of what happened. All of this was decided in the late 1970's to early 1980's. The sad thing is that in Chris Patten's speech he hoped that the people of Hong Kong would eventually would be in charge of their own affairs. Alas, that never did happen. Pray for the shop keeper who was promoting democracy in Hong Kong. Someday hopefully you will see a free Hong Kong again. Don't give up the fight.
