Newton-le-Willows, Vulcan Foundry, English Electric Type 1 D8000 Handing over Ceremony, First Locomotive of BR modernisation Plan, June 1957. A silent cinefilm.
Lord Rusholme, Sir George and Mr Collingwood came from London Euston on a specially hauled Deltic and got off at the Vulcan Halt station on Wargrave Road, Newton-le-Willows.
On the lawn at the rear of the Vulcan Institute, Lord Rusholme, Chairman Sir George Nelson (Chairman of English Electric) and Managing Director of the Vulcan Works, Geoffrey Collingwood pose for publicity photograph by the bust of George Stephenson.
In the background brand new English Electric Type 1 D8000, first locomotive of British Railways Modernisation Plan at the handing over ceremony. It was a big occasion as out of all the companies bidding for the Type 1 contract, the Vulcan had out performed everyone.
Type 1s became Class 20s and are still active on the network today. Locally, they moved coal from Parkside to Fiddlers Ferry Power Station.
