Like most people (I think), I was introduced to Michael Haneke with his film "The Piano Teacher." And then I saw "Funny Games" and it shocked me in a way that I had not been shocked by film before or after until Gaspar Noe's "Irreversible." And in each case, it was not shock for shock's sake only. There was a deep intent behind the shock of each film, a harsh reality most viewers don't want to acknowledge. That for me is when cinema is truly art if one's definition of art is something that changes you, and hopefully for the better.
