The Hanford site in Washington state was part of the Manhattan project, and the home to the first full-scale plutonium production reactor in the world. The plutonium produced there was used in the first nuclear bomb, which was dropped on Nagasaki, Japan. The site is now mostly decommissioned, and is the most contaminated place in the Western Hemisphere. Radiation, toxic chemicals, heavy metals, asbestos … you name it, and it’s at Hanford.
