Hang on, my old GoPro 7 can do THIS??

Just a quick try-out down some familiar trails with my old GoPro 7 in challenging low light conditions. I was honestly surprised by the results. What do you think, is the GoPro 7/8 underrated? Can it compete with the current generation? This video was filmed with a GoPro 7 using custom GoPro Labs firmware for maximum quality and edited in Davinci Resolve Studio. Enjoy!

Maybe it was only me but with gp7 black I found 4k30 was poor quality when compared to 2.7k60. I ended up recording in 2.7k and upscaling to 4k. In good lighting conditions you can probably hardly tell between older and newer generation. The color profiles on the gp7 are also pants if you can't be bothered color grading. I found the natural profile really good on gp12.

Hm, interesting point about 2.7k60. I'll have to try that out. The GP7 sensor with a more powerful processor (GP2 or upcoming GP3) and some more GoPro Labs features would be absolutely fantastic. The bonkers noise reduction and lack of exposure control completely camouflages the excellent sensor in this camera. As you say, in good lighting conditions the performance is still excellent compared to the current generations. In low light however, the newer generations gets ahead with the GoPro Labs improvements. Without GoPro Labs they can be difficult to tell apart.

Yes, inability to disable noise reduction is probably the only reason I've upgraded to gp12... and the battery life 😁

Do you use chesty? How do you make it look so smooth? I used chesty but switched to bike mount because every time the output from the chesty would be very shaky, sometimes I could barely make out what is going on. I thought it's the newer cameras and their fancy stabilization, but you make it work, how?

Hi, yes, I use a chesty most of the time. I use one of those cheap third party chestys that is basically just a plastic plate. I've attached another longer backing plate to it, and added a few loops that I use to secure my backpack chest and stomach straps into. This anchors the chesty way better to my body. The point of that is to eliminate any possibility for the camera to jolt around and shake. So, anchor the camera to your body for better results. Secondly, I use GoPro Labs firmware so I can limit the shutter angle. I film in 30fps and use a shutter angle of 90 degrees. In effect, this limits the shutter speed to 1/120 (assuming 30 fps). If you don't limit the shutter speed (and use auto shutter), the camera will go as low as 1/30, which is catastrophic for stabilization.

Hi, that's in superview? I found out that in wide mode stabilization is kinda worse on Hero 7
