In this video Hanged by the Neck - The Tyburn Gallows, Kevin Hicks demonstrates gallows humour literally as he takes viewers on a journey through the dark and haunting history of the Tyburn Gallows, London. With captivating storytelling, detailed research and unique models, Kevin unravels the macabre practices that unfolded at Tyburn and the grim tales of hangings that took place there. He explores the societal norms and the gruesome spectacles that surrounded public hangings as well as the tragic & funny stories of those who met their fate at the gallows. Altogether a fascinating exploration of a morbid chapter in history.

as a 17 year old, your videos actually made me enjoy learning about history again. I've always loved history and am able to memorize stuff pretty easily, thankfully lol, but highschool has drained my love for it. These videos keep me constantly actually learning things about our great ancestors, and the way that you are able to speak your words and flow the information into the watchers' head is pretty amazing. From the tiny state of New Hampshire, cheers Mr. Hicks:)

Mr. Hicks DOES make it bearable, I agree! I admit to a morbid fascination with execution as a practice against people for “crimes,” acts said to be “crimes” anyway. But whenever hypocrisy occurs, it’s just an absurdity, really. They’re not punishing anyone, just destroying someone’s family, & that family’s life. If they wanted to “punish” them, they’d have come out corrected, made to give restitution for the harm-not just dead. Certainly not dead as a form of Entertainment, OMG! I find the Bows Bells (Bowe’s ?) accent so richly authentic to “Great Britain,” & to the masses of “ordinary people” who’ve lived & worked there as its empire grew expansively-into everywhere. I don’t care much for “empires,” themselves, but many UK histories have a certain deeply-touching, stiff-upper-lip factual basis, I can never resist hearing them told!! Furthermore, they’ve got bona-fides, documents, & LIBRARIES, castles, & fortresses, museums, coats of arms, & armor, etc.-backing it all up!! All we’ve got in the USA-concept are usually, some very fishy, very dodgy “records” & “chronicles,” with very little cultural living proof LEFT, whatsoever. People just make stuff UP!! Then compile a little textbook of nothingness, I appreciate Mr. Kevin Hicks’ & Ms. Julie’s research & the perspectives on “hangings!” A grim record, told lovingly. 💐🌸🌻🌼🕯 Thanks! 🙏🏽

Where I grew up here in Sweden there’s this playground with a huge oak tree in the middle of it. We’d call the spot “The Frog” because the main attraction if you will was one of those ridable animals with a spring shaped like a frog. When I grew older I learned that the oak was used to hang people back in the day. From executioner’s grounds to playground. Quite the difference some hundred odd years make!

Kevin Hicks, you truly excel as a storyteller. Your presentation of the facts was not only meticulous but also profoundly engaging, guiding us through a spectrum of emotions-from amusement to sorrow to indignation. The caliber of your narrative skill is reminiscent of the legendary David Attenborough-a comparison I do not make lightly. Your exploration of the Tyburn Gallows doesn’t just recount history; it invites deep philosophical contemplation, prompting us to question the very essence of freedom and liberation. Your narrative prowess transforms a morbid chapter of history into a compelling journey of reflection and understanding. In a world where history is revised and used as a political tool, it's refreshing to see somebody who is dedicated to presenting history in a factual, educational way. Every crime in England at that time was punishable by death and they apparently hanged many, many people. Yet crime continued. It is almost as if punishment is not a good deterrent to crime and the real issues may be much more complex than that.

I'm watching for the first time tonight and I love the charisma of our host Kevin Hicks. You are funny, irreverent and sarcastic and I haven't laughed so hard watching history in quite some time. Beau travail, Mssr. Hicks. Mr. Hicks, you may know that the phrase, "not in my backyard," (or NIMBY for short) was first coined by the late, great George Carlin in the 70's. You use it with aplomb here sir. However, as an American I was stunned to silence by your editorial, expressed in all seriousness; "There is one law for the rich, and one law for the rest of us." Truer words have never been spoken, Mr. Hicks, bravo. I would happily exchange your sadness as a Brit for my disgust as an American. I've wanted to expatriate for decades, never more so than now. Someone arrives concerned about what has happened to Jack and they are silenced and told to listen.......from his hiding place although unconscious Jack can be heard breathing. I remember when I turned 18 and got put up for a few days. My dad, totally by city bus, went to the bondsman, paid him and got the paperwork. Then bussed down to the prison where he waited about 18 hrs for them to release me. It didn't happen until he caught the warden leaving after work that night and pleaded to him to see what the hold up was. I was out in 25 mins from that point. My dad was waiting for me with my fav jacket and we hopped on the last damn bus outta there the night. I love you dad and I miss you.

I was a sister at the Tyburn Convent and in their undercroft they had a model, not quite lifesize, of the triple tree gallows. It was of course as a memorial to the Tyburm Martyrs who died because of their faith. However I found it gruesome when we went down once a year for that particular service.

"There is one law for the rich, and there is one law for the rest of us.." SO FEW people say this publicly anymore. I applaud you for saying that in your KZbin video here; the modern equivalent of cable television.

Mr. Hicks, or, to accord you the proper respect, officer Hicks, or is it Constable Hicks? Not sure... Please advise. I have to compliment you on your excellent storytelling in this video... so eloquent in your use of the king's English to bring all the old history back to life again. I wish I had this when I was in school studying history. But, it's never too late to learn more. Thank you again, and please keep up your excellent work. I have to say your story about the Irish lady brought me to tears and made me feel proud at the same time because my girlfriend happens to be a lovely Irish lady, whom I was very fortunate to meet 3 years ago. Luckily for us, we live in more enlightened times.

I lived in church street just off the Edgware Road when I was young , and I can’t count the amount of times while walking over to Hyde park you could pass over that plaque in the road where the gallows stood , There was a small convent just off oxford street and I was told a nun would go to the plaque every day to say a prayer over the place where all this death took place ,

Wow, what a narrative! Never imagined that hangings at those times would draw such a crowd out. Jack the escape artist was certainly a character and a thorn in the side of the authorities. No wonder the crowd loved him. Thanks for the shout out! You guessed my roots right on!
