Both arguments are correct here. For thematic and storytelling purposes, the "No way of knowing" argument would be better, with the whole Butterfly Effect theme. For gameplay purposes, the totem argument is correct, to give the player an actual fair chance with their playthrough, and keep them from feeling cheated by the game.

Actually, the reason you have a problem with the game is the exact reason I love this game! In real life, you DON'T know what effect your actions will have. In the end, a seemingly smart decision (playing it safe, saving someone, etc) can actually be bad. And all the clues in the world wouldn't help you. That's actually why I like this game.

That was the whole point of his tirade at the beginning of the episode, because people were attacking him for making wrong decisions.

***** Okay, so the totems could help him with that. The fact is, he didn't find those totems, so he couldn't have known what to do. Is it his fault for not being thorough? Yes. But it's also because he has to cater to his fanbase by actually playing the game and not scouring every nook and cranny. Having to grab every clue and totem is like requiring the player to be a completionist. It's not bad, but it's just not convenient for Mark to record all of that.

I'm glad he finally realised the reason so many things seem "how was I supposed to know that?" is because he's missing many totems. You usually have to deviate from the main path to find them, instead, you're going straight for it, moving the plot along, but in doing so, you miss many totems and clues. About the totems Mark, follow this rule of thumb: the white and yellow totems show the good possible futures, the ones you want to make happen. The black and brown ones are the possible futures you don't want to make happen, and the red ones show moments that can lead to those bad futures.

A wendigo or windigo (it has sooooo many different spellings) is a monster/spirit that has Native American origins. I wrote a paper about it for a psychology class about explaining the supernatural phenomenon with psychological and medical terminology. The wendigo comes in a bunch of different forms. One, just a general monster kind of like bigfoot. Two, in certain Native American tribes (Algonquian-speaking mostly), they feared a wendigo spirit that would possess a man and make him go crazy and they would, supposedly (according to my research and a really old Canadian fur trader journal i read), kick him out of the tribe or kill him. Three, a little combo of the first two, a man who goes crazy or is put in a situation where he has to eat human meat (like a miner), becomes less human (or is then possessed by the wendigo spirit, depending on what version you read) turns into the monster of version one. Finally, there's something called Wendigo Psychosis, mental health professionals call this the fear of becoming a monster and craving of human flesh. It's a cultural disorder specifically among the Northern Algonquians caused by the lack of food and being trapped indoors during the winter months.

Well for those that doesn't know what a wendigo is... it's actually a cannibal from hundreds of years ago, the wendigo was a human that possibly was with a group of other people in the wild, but when they started starving and had no food they ate their own people and when they kept eaten more people they started to evolve into this creature, wendigos are very good at copying voices to bait it's prey to it and it moves very fast, bullets and knives are useless to kill it but burning it will kill the wendigo which makes the flare gun a weapon to kill it anything else is useless so you better not miss on that shot Emily...

My view is that even if Mark is making the "wrong" choices, he's making choices that, in the moment, he believes is the right thing to do. I feel like that's pretty realistic in the sense that when you're going through something like this in real life, you don't know if the choice you're making is the right choice or not. At least he's sticking with it and continuing to play this game instead of giving up or starting the game all the way over just because he made a "wrong" choice

Here’s a way you can get Emily to like Matt AND keep him alive. When they’re at the radio tower and Emily finds the flare gun give it to Matt. That way if you choose to save Emily when those options come up Matt will be able to use the gun against the attack. I saw it in a video so I hope this helps for anybody else playing this game.

Jamifa007 fun fact (theory) from the Theorist Fandom, Josh,if you known enough about psychology, Josh seemingly has schizophrenia but isn't being treated for it, there are documents that show he's being treated for depression meaning that schizophrenia isn't being treated and likely is what's making Josh pretend that this prank was okay. he's seemingly been diagnosed from a young child, about 12, meaning he learned his sisters died because of a joke played by his closets friends, which is later revealed that apparently visions of his sisters have been telling him and forcing him into playing the prank. Dr Hill is apparently a mix of all his past psychologists as he has seen a Dr Hill before

I think the point of the whole "Butterfly Effect" aspect of this game is that you DON'T know how your going to affect anything. Like, isn't that what the whole idea means? There's no right or wrong way to play the game. The burst of butterflies doesn't mean you made the right or wrong choice.

Clue 1: Emily is extremely over-reactive and nothing would hint to her actually being good with a gun. It's possible she might react to Matt tapping her on the shoulder and waste the shot. In addition she is extremely selfish as indicated by her interaction with Matt so far (i.e. stealing his idea) and would save herself if she could, but if Matt was armed and she was not she would cling to him for safety. Clue 2: Matt is calm and level headed. He did not panic and quiver when deer approached him and was able to determine they were more scared of him than he was of them. To add to this Matt would be the best candidate with any situation requiring some level of skill. He totes around his Varsity jacket to show off his athletic prowess and was described as athletic in the beginning. Conclusion: Matt's level headedness would save his life, but Emily's selfishness would cost him it. Conclusion of Conclusion: You should have gave the gun to Matt. Been a douche to Emily. And saved yourself. Result: Matt is able to move on without regret or feeling of being unfulfilled because of all of his obviously suppressed feelings and questions. Matt is able to escape and easily outrun murderer to warn the others and notify them of the inbound chopper. Matt is a loner. Matt probably goes emo.

This is a good game, it breaks apart the usual gamer paradigm of "good and bad choices" made by an omnipotent gamer-god. Mark keeps demanding for clues so that he can know what choice to make, when he is playing as COLLEGE students stuck with limited information going through it moment by moment. It's really annoying when people complain about Matt's death... You can't save everyone during your first, blind play-through (unless you cheated, or is lucky). Your clue was that saving Emily the first time didn't work, and she fell further down, seemingly impossible to reach from there anymore. Plus the platform you'd jump to, being in multiple shots during the seemingly pointless drama parts, and making you (or those who pay attention at least :) ) think, that you could get her from there easier. The flare was just a last resort thing, which wouldn't matter if if proper choices were made, which is why it wasn't foreshadowed, and you just got unlucky on that 50/50 possibility.

Yea, the fact that you couldn't save emily the first time is the game trying to get you to cut your losses and pray that she'll be fine and not die from falling like Jess seemed too when she fell down the elevator (not when it dropped out from under her, she fell from above and hit that spot and survived cause Mark came to the rescue fast enough). I've honestly never really seen gameplay where Matt ended up with the flare gun and had to fight back in this scenario. But yea, there are multiple places where folks can die. Technically, Matt could have died by the cliff by attacking the moose with his axe. At least this isn't some TellTale game where certain characters are just doomed to die, it's just a matter of when.

Hey Mark, just wanted to let you know that there is a Guidance Totem before you find the flare gun that tells you to give it to Matt. Not having the flare gun isn't why he died anyway. He died because you tried to save Emily twice, and would have died even if you had given him the gun. Giving Matt the gun causes him to shoot it off right away, which means he still would have had no defense. If you want Matt to live, you have to give him the gun _and_ secure his safety before trying to save Emily a second time. EDIT: I really wish I could find a playthrough where Ashley doesn't stab the psycho... EDIT 2: Thank you everyone who has been telling me about Jack's playthrough. I found that video before anyone posted about it, so you can all stop now :p. I also now fully understand with how agreeing/disagreeing with Emily, giving/keeping the gun, and jumping/saving Em all effect whether Matt dies. Thank you for the explanations, but there's no more reason for anyone else to post about it.

EDIT - Ignore my ranting. You realized the error of your mistake halfway through the episode. All is good :D Mark, as others have informed you, there was a totem that did specify to give the flare gun to Matt, and depending on the choice of agreeing or disagreeing with Emily to go to the Fire Tower at the Cable Car station, you would have either fired the flare or kept it for the attack. You are missing the whole point of this game. It is about the butterfly effect, which is meant to simulate the real life choices that a person would make. You run on your own instincts and get no real warnings about deaths and situations, because that is how real life is meant to be. It forces you to live with your instincts and choices and you cannot just continue to revolve around events that have happened, such as Matt's death. To make this a bit more lenient, totems were added in. And while some may argue, LPers don't bother with them, that's bullshit. The point of an LP is to both entertain and play the game, including the exploration of the games areas, which is what people tend to want to see when they watch an LP. However, I say live with your choice and keep going, because I want to see more characters die damnit!

When it comes to horror games, if it asks me, I will NEVER be honest with it and admit to a fear of the dark. That's a thing in this game, right? That if you say you aren't afraid of the scarecrow it asks if you're afraid of the dark, and if you say yes then the lighting of the whole game is like 2x darker, right? I, personally, will take the mannequins/scarecrow over the dark any day.

You're not supposed to know Mark, that's the point. You are basically living out an interactive horror movie. You make your choices and maybe, because of the butterfly effect, that choice works out and maybe it doesn't. It wouldn't be any fun if you knew every time whether that choice would work out in your favor or not. Also to be fair, pay attention to the guidance totems. If you are thorough and find them, it will guide you on how to play the game with the best outcome. For example, one of them shows Emily handing Matt the flare gun. But also to be fair again, since you agreed with Emily to go the tower, he would have used the flare gun immediately and died anyways. With the choices you made, the only way to save Matt is just jump to safety immediately or at least after you tried to save Emily once.

+Chess RedEagle Also, I realize he took all of that back later on but point still stands. As for the totems, they are all POSSIBLE outcomes. The death ones are possible deaths of the person finding the totem. Guidance gives you hints on how you should play to get everyone to dawn. Loss and danger totems are possible deaths or dangerous situations for OTHER characters and the fortune totems show possible good outcomes for situations that have not happened yet.

It's not a set in stone story, the whole idea is that you're supposed to make choices that have an effect on the story and then live with the consequences of what those choices are. It's not about making the right or wrong choices or which choices could have/should have been right simply that those choices led to a specific outcome. Heck the developers didn't have to put in the guidance totems, they could have just said "here you go, make choices and watch as you fuck up"

Theory here: Josh brought everyone back because he wanted to kill everyone that was in in the prank, as he saw them planking Hannah as the direct reason why Hannah and Beth died. If Josh is the psycho, that explains why he didn’t seem to try to kill Sam, as she wasn’t part of it.

Yeah Josh was the psychopath, but it was also just a prank. Josh planned to do a movie about his friends. All of it was harmless. If you choose to kill Ashler in the saw one and save Josh, the saw will still go through Josh. If you choose to kill Ashley by the gun, it is still harmless. Ashley will not die, that's why when Mark choosed to dont do anything in that part, it was supposed to cut Ashley in half. All of Josh's doings are harmless. The only thing that made people die is because of the Wendigo's or their stupidity.

+Steve Docherty actually mark made quite good choices (like he didn't shoot ashley). And the emily/matt choices are mean. In some situations it's a good choice to help others but that last episode is really mean with matt and em. If matt should try save em, he should first disagree to go to the tower and then he should get the fire gun (if he agrees to go to the tower he would use the gun immediately so then still no gun for defense against the monster). And there is a totem which shows em should give the gun to matt but without the disagree-choice it would help matt. That's so cruel.
